Chapter 3 - The meeting

Rory Thompson stood outside her apartment building, nervously checking her watch for what felt like the hundredth time. She had been instructed to meet a car at 2 pm, but so far, there was no sign of it.

As she waited, Rory couldn't help but wonder what this meeting was all about. The woman on the phone, Rachel, had been vague about the details, but Rory had a feeling that it was something big.

She thought back to the conversation she had with Rachel the day before. Rachel had told her that she was looking for someone to fill a unique position, but she hadn't given Rory any details about what the job entailed.

Rory's mind was filled with questions as she waited for the car to arrive. What kind of job was it? Was it something she would be interested in? And what kind of company was she dealing with?

Just as she was starting to get anxious, a sleek black car pulled up to the curb. The driver, a tall, imposing man with a stern expression, got out and opened the door for Rory.

"Miss Thompson?" he asked, his voice deep and gravelly.

Rory nodded, feeling a little intimidated by the driver's formal demeanor. "That's me," she replied, trying to sound confident.

The driver nodded and gestured for Rory to get in the car. As she settled into the plush leather seat, Rory couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. She had no idea what this meeting was about, but she had a feeling that it was going to be big.

The car pulled up to a sleek, modern office building in the financial district. The driver got out and opened the door for Rory, who stepped out onto the sidewalk, feeling a little awestruck by the towering skyscrapers that surrounded her.

As she followed the driver into the building, Rory couldn't help but wonder what kind of company would have an office in a place like this. The lobby was sleek and modern, with a reception desk that looked like it belonged in a luxury hotel.

The driver led Rory to a private elevator, which whisked them up to the top floor of the building. As the doors opened, Rory stepped out into a luxurious office suite, complete with a stunning view of the city skyline.

A woman with long, curly brown hair and a warm smile greeted Rory from behind a sleek, modern desk. "Hi, Rory," she said, extending a manicured hand. "I'm Rachel. It's great to finally meet you in person."

Rory shook Rachel's hand, feeling a little intimidated by her polished demeanor. "Thanks, Rachel," she replied, trying to sound confident. "It's great to meet you too."

Rachel gestured for Rory to take a seat, and as she sat down, Rory couldn't help but notice the stunning view of the city skyline. "So, Rachel," she said, trying to sound casual. "What's this meeting all about? You were a little vague on the phone."

Rachel smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I apologize for that," she said. "I didn't want to scare you off before we even had a chance to meet. But now that we're here, I think it's time we got down to business."

Rory's heart began to beat a little faster as Rachel leaned forward, a serious expression on her face. "Rory, I work for a man named Elijah Jackson," she said. "He's a very successful businessman, and he's looking for someone to play a very specific role. Someone who can pretend to be his wife for a few months."

Rory's eyes widened in surprise as Rachel's words hung in the air. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Pretend to be someone's wife? It sounded like something out of a movie.

But as she looked into Rachel's eyes, Rory saw something there that gave her pause. A glimmer of desperation, perhaps, or a hint of urgency. Whatever it was, it made Rory feel like this was more than just a crazy scheme. It was something real, something that could potentially change her life forever.

"So, what's in it for me?" Rory asked, trying to sound confident.

Rachel smiled, a hint of relief in her eyes. "We're willing to offer you a substantial amount of money," she said. "Enough to pay off your debts and set you up for a while. Plus, you'll get to experience the luxury and excitement of being part of a high-society family, even if it's just for a few months."

Rory's eyes widened as she thought about the possibilities. She had always dreamed of being part of a wealthy family, of experiencing the luxury and excitement that came with it. And now, it seemed like that dream was within her grasp.

But as she looked into Rachel's eyes, Rory saw something there that gave her pause. A warning, perhaps, or
