Chapter 13 - The Ballad of Shadows

The night air in Ashbrook was heavy with the scent of smoke and uncertainty. Mina stood by the carriage, her thoughts racing as she watched Elias speak with the guards. The day's events had revealed more than just the villagers' struggles—they hinted at a deeper conspiracy, one that Elias seemed all too familiar with.

---

The Tensions Beneath

As they departed Ashbrook, Mina couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in her chest. The villagers' accounts, while honest, hinted at forces beyond mere rebellion. Organized attacks, strange symbols left behind, and whispers of outsiders stoked her suspicions.

Elias, sitting across from her in the carriage, seemed to sense her unease. "You've been quiet again, Mina. Does something trouble you?"

She hesitated, knowing how easily Elias could twist her words. "It's just... strange. The villagers spoke of outsiders inciting the unrest. If that's true, this isn't just a local problem. It could escalate into something far worse."

Elias nodded, his expression unreadable. "You're perceptive. That's precisely why I brought you along. Your ability to see the bigger picture is a rare gift."

Mina glanced at him sharply. "And what's the bigger picture here, Your Grace? What do you hope to achieve with this mission?"

For a moment, Elias's mask slipped, and she caught a glimpse of the man behind the charm. "Stability," he said simply. "For the kingdom. For the people. And for myself."

An Unexpected Stop

Their journey was interrupted when the carriage came to an abrupt halt. The guards ahead shouted warnings, and Mina felt her heart skip a beat. Elias immediately stepped out, motioning for her to stay inside.

Of course, Mina ignored him. She climbed out of the carriage and found herself staring at a group of armed men blocking the road. They wore mismatched armor and bore no insignia, but their weapons were polished and deadly.

"Stand down," Elias commanded, his voice cold and authoritative.

The leader of the group, a burly man with a scar across his cheek, sneered. "We don't take orders from nobles. Hand over your gold and supplies, and we might let you live."

Mina's mind raced. These weren't ordinary bandits—they moved with precision and spoke with confidence. She glanced at Elias, who seemed far too calm for the situation.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Elias asked, his tone almost bored.

The bandits laughed, but the sound died in their throats when Elias drew his sword. The blade gleamed in the moonlight, and the air around him seemed to crackle with energy.

Mina had never seen him fight before, but it was clear he was no ordinary noble. Within moments, the bandits were either subdued or fleeing for their lives.

Revealing Intentions

As the guards cleared the road, Mina turned to Elias, her curiosity getting the better of her. "You didn't hesitate for a second. It's almost like you knew this would happen."

Elias wiped his blade clean and sheathed it, his expression unreadable. "Experience teaches you to expect the unexpected. Bandits like these are opportunists, nothing more."

"But they weren't ordinary bandits," Mina pressed. "They were too organized."

Elias's lips twitched into a faint smile. "You're right, of course. They weren't. But knowing that won't change what needs to be done."

Mina narrowed her eyes, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "You always speak in riddles, Your Grace. Why not just tell me the truth?"

Elias stepped closer, his gaze intense. "Because the truth is dangerous, Mina. And you're not ready to face it."

---

A Fragile Alliance

The rest of the journey was tense but uneventful. They arrived at the next village, Ravenhurst, under the cover of darkness. Unlike Ashbrook, Ravenhurst was eerily quiet. The streets were empty, and the windows of the houses were shuttered.

Mina felt a chill run down her spine as they approached the local lord's manor. The building was grand but foreboding, its dark stone walls looming over the village.

Inside, they were greeted by Lord Roderic, a thin man with sharp features and an even sharper tongue. He wasted no time in complaining about the "lazy peasants" and their "ungrateful rebellion."

Elias listened patiently, his polite mask firmly in place. Mina, however, couldn't hide her disgust.

"Perhaps if the villagers felt supported rather than oppressed, they wouldn't resort to rebellion," she said, her voice cool but firm.

Lord Roderic's eyes narrowed. "And who are you to lecture me on how to manage my lands? A mere maid, playing at diplomacy?"

Elias's voice cut through the tension like a blade. "Mina speaks on behalf of the crown. You would do well to listen."

Roderic scowled but said nothing further. Mina glanced at Elias, surprised by his defense of her, but his expression gave nothing away.

Unseen Dangers

That night, as Mina prepared to rest, she found herself unable to shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. She stepped out onto the balcony of her guest room, gazing out at the silent village below.

A knock at the door startled her. She turned to find Kael standing there, his usual smirk replaced by a look of concern.

"What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice a mix of relief and irritation.

"I couldn't let you face this mess alone," Kael said, stepping inside. "And it's a good thing I came. This village isn't just quiet—it's haunted."

Mina frowned. "Haunted?"

Kael nodded. "People have been disappearing. The villagers are too scared to talk about it, but I overheard some guards whispering. They think it's the work of a curse."

Mina's heart sank. In the original game, Ravenhurst was the site of a tragic event that sparked a chain of disasters. If they didn't act quickly, history—or rather, the game's storyline—would repeat itself.

A Dangerous Decision

Determined to uncover the truth, Mina and Kael ventured into the village under the cover of darkness. Elias caught them as they were about to leave, his expression a mix of annoyance and intrigue.

"And where do you think you're going?" he asked.

"To find answers," Mina replied. "You can come with us, or you can stay here and pretend everything is fine."

Elias sighed but joined them without further argument. Together, the three of them began their investigation, delving deeper into the mystery of Ravenhurst and the dangers lurking in the shadows.

What they discovered would change everything—about the rebellion, the kingdom, and even themselves.
