The desert stretched endlessly before them, its crushing vastness offering no reprieve to Kakashi's team. The oppressive heat seemed to seep under their skin, making every step a challenge. After several hours of walking, the massive walls of Sunagakure finally appeared on the horizon, their imposing presence standing in stark contrast to the barren landscape.
As they approached the village's great gates, Kakashi raised a hand to signal a halt.
"Stay alert," he said calmly. "We don't know how they'll react to us arriving so quickly."
Sakura, visibly exhausted but resolute, nodded. "Temari must have already left to find him, right? Who's going to meet us here?"
Kakashi didn't respond immediately, his visible eye keenly observing the sentries perched atop the walls.
"We'll find out soon," he finally replied.
As they reached the gates, two guards descended, their faces marked with fatigue but also wariness.
"Halt! Identify yourselves immediately!" one of the guards demanded, his hand resting on the hilt of his katana.
"We're from Konoha," Kakashi declared, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. "I'm Kakashi Hatake, and this is Sakura Haruno. We've been sent to help recover Gaara."
One of the guards furrowed his brow. "And how do we know you're telling the truth? We can't let just anyone in. Recent events have put the village on high alert."
Sakura, already at her wit's end, stepped forward. "You think we're here for sightseeing? We walked for hours under this blazing sun to help you, and now you're accusing us of lying?"
"Konoha has always been an ally to Suna," Kakashi added, his tone composed. "But if you're unsure, call someone inside to confirm our identity."
A tense silence settled. The two guards exchanged glances before one of them reluctantly nodded.
"Fine. Wait here."
Minutes passed, each second stretching under the scorching sun. Finally, a man wearing Suna shinobi attire arrived.
"Kakashi Hatake?" he asked, scrutinizing them.
"Yes," Kakashi replied.
The man studied them briefly before opening the gates. "Welcome to Sunagakure. Apologies for the misunderstanding, but orders are strict. Follow me; Kankuro is waiting for you."
Once inside, they were struck by the tense atmosphere permeating the village. The residents moved quickly, their faces etched with worry.
"Everyone seems anxious," Sakura murmured.
"The Kazekage has been abducted," their guide replied. "Gaara is more than just a leader to us. He's a symbol of hope."
It was incredible how people changed… They once accused him of being a demon, and now they were worried for him.
Upon reaching the command center, they were greeted by Kankuro, who looked even more exhausted than they were. His arms were bandaged, and his face bore signs of recent battles.
"Kakashi, Sakura, you're finally here," he said, sighing in relief. "We need all the help we can get."
"What do we know about the situation?" Kakashi asked as they entered the tent, where a detailed map of the region was spread across a large table.
"The kidnappers are heading north into the Wastelands," Kankuro explained. "The Akatsuki, of course. There are two of them, but their power is unbelievable. We tried to stop them, but…"
He lowered his gaze, visibly frustrated.
"But?" Sakura pressed.
"But they were too strong. I fought them, and… let's just say I'm lucky to still be standing. Gaara is resisting them, I know, but time is running out."
Kakashi studied the map intently. "What about reconnaissance? Have teams been sent out?"
"Yes, but the terrain is challenging. Communication is limited, and the enemy has likely set traps to slow us down."
Sakura crossed her arms, thinking. "We need to act quickly. Every minute counts."
Kankuro nodded. "Temari has already gone ahead as a scout. She'll keep us informed of any developments."
Sakura briefly glanced at Kakashi, worry flickering in her eyes. "What about Naruto?"
Kakashi hesitated before replying. "Another team is handling his recovery, as I told you before. We need to focus on Gaara."
Kankuro placed a hand on the table, his expression grave. "Naruto is an ally, but Gaara is our Kazekage. We can't afford to lose our leader."
Sakura clenched her fists but said nothing. Kakashi placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"We'll bring him back, Sakura. Let's focus on what we can do here."
After a brief strategic discussion, Kankuro handed them a communication scroll.
"Use this to keep us updated," he said. "But be careful. The Akatsuki is no ordinary enemy."
"We know," Kakashi replied.
As they prepared to leave the tent, Sakura paused for a moment to look at Kankuro.
"Take care of yourself," she said.
He nodded, a faint smile on his lips. "You too."
They left the village under a crimson sky, the sun slowly setting behind the dunes.
"Let's move," Kakashi said, adjusting his forehead protector.
Sakura, silent but resolute, followed close behind. The mission was just beginning, and the challenges ahead would test their limits. But one thing was clear: failure was not an option.
