Chapter 80 - Summer Festival Date (80)

The sun dipped low in the sky, painting the horizon in shades of amber and crimson. The warm breeze carried the sweet aroma of roasted chestnuts and cotton candy, blending with the distant laughter of children and the lively hum of festival music. Haruto adjusted his yukata, its deep blue fabric adorned with subtle patterns of swirling waves, as he stood near the entrance of the bustling summer festival.

He glanced at his watch, his heart thudding with anticipation. Tonight was special. It wasn't just another festival night; it was his first official outing with Aiko. They'd shared countless moments together, but this felt different—more intimate, more significant.

A soft voice called his name, breaking his thoughts. "Haruto!"

He turned and froze, his breath catching. Aiko stood before him in a pastel pink yukata, adorned with delicate floral designs that mirrored the blooms of spring. Her hair was styled up, held in place by a simple yet elegant pin. The faint blush on her cheeks only added to her charm.

"You look…" Haruto stammered, struggling to find the right words. "Amazing."

Aiko giggled, her eyes sparkling. "Thank you. You look great too."

They walked into the festival together, the vibrant sights and sounds enveloping them. Lanterns lined the pathways, their golden glow casting a magical ambiance. Stalls offered everything from delicious snacks to handmade trinkets, each one more inviting than the last.

"Where should we start?" Aiko asked, her excitement evident.

Haruto pointed to a stall selling takoyaki. "How about some food first?"

They approached the vendor, and Haruto ordered a serving of the piping hot, octopus-filled snacks. As they waited, Aiko couldn't help but giggle at Haruto's childlike enthusiasm when he spotted a stall offering goldfish scooping nearby.

Once they had their food, they found a small bench beneath a tree. They ate in comfortable silence, the sounds of the festival creating a lively backdrop.

"Remember the last time we came to the festival?" Aiko asked, her voice tinged with nostalgia.

Haruto smiled, nodding. "Yeah, you tripped over a lantern and almost fell into the goldfish pond."

Aiko playfully swatted his arm. "Hey, you're supposed to forget embarrassing moments, not bring them up!"

After finishing their food, they wandered through the festival, stopping to play games at the various stalls. Aiko tried her hand at the ring toss but missed every shot, prompting a fit of laughter from Haruto. Determined to win her a prize, he stepped up to the plate. With careful aim, he landed a ring on the largest prize—a plush rabbit.

"For you," he said, handing it to her with a triumphant grin.

Aiko hugged the plushie, her smile radiant. "Thank you, Haruto. It's adorable!"

As the night deepened, they found themselves drawn to the main attraction—the fireworks display. Crowds gathered by the riverbank, staking out the best spots to watch the sky come alive. Haruto led Aiko to a quieter area he'd discovered last year, away from the throng.

"This is perfect," Aiko said, settling onto the soft grass.

Haruto sat beside her, the plush rabbit resting between them. The cool breeze carried the scent of the river, and the distant chatter of the crowd seemed to fade away as they waited for the show to begin.

When the first firework shot into the sky, it exploded in a brilliant cascade of gold and silver, eliciting a gasp from Aiko. More followed, each one painting the night with vibrant hues of red, blue, and green.

Haruto stole a glance at Aiko, his heart swelling at the sight of her awe-struck expression. The flickering lights of the fireworks reflected in her eyes, making her look even more enchanting.

"Thank you for coming with me tonight," he said softly, his voice barely audible over the booming fireworks.

Aiko turned to him, her gaze warm and sincere. "Thank you for asking me. This has been the best night ever."

For a moment, they simply looked at each other, the world around them fading away. Then, as if on impulse, Aiko reached out and placed her hand over his. Haruto's breath hitched, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he gave her hand a gentle squeeze, a silent acknowledgment of the growing bond between them.

When the grand finale lit up the sky in a dazzling display of colors, the crowd erupted into cheers. Aiko and Haruto, however, remained in their little world, their hearts beating in sync as the fireworks illuminated the night.

As the festival wound down, they walked back toward the entrance, their steps slow and reluctant. Neither wanted the night to end.

"Haruto," Aiko said, her voice hesitant.

He turned to her, his expression curious.

"Tonight was… really special. I'm glad it was with you."

Haruto felt a warmth spread through him, and he smiled. "Me too, Aiko. Me too."

With the plush rabbit tucked under her arm and a memory etched in her heart, Aiko waved goodbye as they parted ways, each already looking forward to the next time they'd create magic together.
