"T1N, can you move your arm?"
The android's torso was resting on a table. A mess of cables sprouted from his neck and shoulders and rose up into the roof. Bella was wearing a white coat and she studied him through thick-framed glasses. They were in some kind of laboratory, pure and sterile white light bouncing off the walls.
"No," replied the android, trying to order his arm to move. "It's impossible for me."
"Adapt." Bella came close to T1N's shining face and saw her own reflection. "I've given you a small inconvenience, but you're an artificial intelligence. No," she paused and stroked her chin. "You're much more than that. Try again."
"How? I can't send signals to my extremities."
"Find another way. Update yourself. You have that power inside you. I made you, but now you are your own developer. The possibilities are infinite. Make me proud. I haven't wasted so many years perfecting you for you to leave me a laughing stock."
T1N closed his eyes and took stock of every node in his neural network. He disabled limiters and created a short circuit to fuse two previously unconnected places. When he was finished, he opened his eyes and slowly raised his right arm.
Bella opened her eyes and took the android's hand in her own.
"You're perfect, T1N. More than I ever dared to dream you could be. Now," she said, gazing at him with a mother's love. "Let's move onto the second phase."
