Chapter 196 - The Shadow OF Orion

The world around them seemed to pause after the devastating explosion. The team had barely managed to escape, but the haunting transmission from Orion's shadowy network left a mark on everyone's mind. The distorted voice from Zara's device echoed ominously:

"You think this is over? You've only just begun to understand what you're up against."

Everyone was silent. Dust and ash covered them, and the faint smell of smoke lingered in the air. Evelyn leaned against a wall, clutching her injured ribs. Sana sat nearby, her face pale but her eyes blazing with anger. Rylan, battered and bruised, paced back and forth, his fists clenched tightly.

"We need answers," Rylan growled. "Now."

Zara tapped furiously on her portable device, trying to trace the source of the transmission. Her fingers moved with the speed of her racing thoughts.

"This wasn't a random taunt," she said. "Orion is still pulling the strings. But this signal... it's not local. It's bouncing off multiple servers across the globe."

"Can you find where it's coming from?" Sana asked.

"I can try," Zara replied, her brow furrowing in concentration. "But it's like chasing a shadow. Every time I think I've got it, it slips away."

As Zara worked, Evelyn's voice cut through the tense silence. "They knew we'd survive."

"What?" Sana asked, turning to her.

"This wasn't just about killing us," Evelyn explained, her voice steady despite her visible pain. "They wanted to send a message. They're showing us that no matter how many steps ahead we think we are, they'll always be further."

Sana's fists tightened. "We can't let them win."

Zara's device beeped suddenly, and her eyes widened. "Got it! There's a pattern here a sequence embedded in the transmission. It's a signature. Whoever sent this wanted us to find it."

"What does it mean?" Rylan asked.

Zara hesitated. "It's... a location. Hidden within the code." She turned the screen toward the group, revealing coordinates. "But it's not a safe place. It's a trap."

"We've walked into traps before," Rylan said grimly. "We'll walk into this one too, but this time, we'll be ready."

The team regrouped at their temporary hideout. Plans were drawn, weapons were checked, and strategies were debated. The coordinates pointed to an abandoned facility on the outskirts of a forgotten industrial zone.

"Orion is toying with us," Evelyn said as she loaded her gun. "They want us to come. They're expecting us to be desperate."

"They're right," Sana said, her voice filled with quiet determination. "But they've underestimated just how far we're willing to go."

As they prepared to leave, Zara pulled Rylan aside. "There's something else," she said hesitantly. "This location... it's connected to your past."

Rylan froze. "What do you mean?"

Zara handed him a file she had recovered while decoding the coordinates. It was old, weathered, and marked with the logo of a company Rylan thought he had left behind years ago—Neural Edge Industries.

"This place was part of their black-site operations," Zara explained. "It might hold answers to why Orion is targeting you specifically."

Rylan's jaw tightened. "Then we're going in. No matter what."

The facility loomed in the distance, its crumbling walls and broken windows standing as a testament to years of abandonment. But the eerie silence surrounding it made the team's instincts scream that it wasn't as lifeless as it seemed.

The group moved cautiously, their weapons drawn. Zara stayed behind in their makeshift command center, monitoring the situation and feeding them live updates through their earpieces.

"Be careful," Zara warned. "The place is rigged with surveillance. They know you're here."

Inside the facility, the air was cold and damp. The faint hum of machinery echoed through the hallways, a strange sound for a supposedly abandoned site.

"It's too quiet," Evelyn whispered, her eyes scanning the shadows.

Suddenly, a loud metallic clang echoed, followed by a robotic voice.

"Intruders detected. Initiating lockdown."

Doors slammed shut around them, trapping the group inside. Red lights flashed, and the faint sound of footsteps human and mechanical grew closer.

"Zara!" Rylan shouted. "What's happening?"

"They've activated automated defenses," Zara replied, her voice tense. "I'm trying to override, but this system is unlike anything I've seen before."

A group of armed guards appeared from the shadows, their faces obscured by masks. The team sprang into action, engaging in a fierce firefight. Bullets ricocheted off the metal walls, and the air filled with the deafening sounds of combat.

Sana took cover behind a pillar, her sharp eyes picking off enemies with precision. Evelyn, despite her injuries, fought with a ferocity that surprised even herself. Rylan led the charge, his movements calculated and deadly.

Amid the chaos, a robotic drone swooped down, targeting the group with laser-guided weapons.

"Take it out!" Rylan shouted.

Sana aimed and fired, her shot hitting its weak point. The drone exploded, sending sparks flying.

As the dust settled, the group found themselves in a large, dimly lit room. At its center was a high-tech terminal, glowing ominously.

"This is it," Zara said through the earpiece. "Whatever they wanted you to find, it's here."

Rylan approached the terminal cautiously. A familiar logo appeared on the screen Neural Edge Industries. Beneath it was a message:

"Welcome back, Rylan. We've been waiting for you."

Sana looked at him in shock. "What is this?"

Before Rylan could respond, a holographic figure materialized. It was a man, his face partially obscured, but his voice was unmistakably the same one from the earlier transmission.

"Ah, Rylan," the figure said mockingly. "You've done well to come this far. But did you really think you could escape your past?"

"What do you want?" Rylan demanded.

The figure chuckled. "You already know. This isn't just about you. It's about all of you. Your team, your choices, your defiance—they've made you a threat to our vision. And threats must be eliminated."

The hologram flickered, and the man's face became clearer. Rylan's eyes widened in recognition.

"No... it can't be," he whispered.

The hologram smirked. "Oh, but it is. Welcome to the real game, Rylan. And this time, the stakes are higher than ever."

The room began to shake, alarms blaring as the facility's self-destruct sequence activated.

Zara's voice cut through the chaos. "You have less than five minutes to get out of there!"

The team exchanged frantic glances.

"Move!" Rylan shouted.

As they raced toward the exit, the hologram's voice echoed behind them:

"You can't run from the shadow, Rylan. Orion will always find you."

The team barely made it out of the crumbling facility, diving to safety as it exploded behind them. But as they regrouped, Rylan's haunted expression didn't go unnoticed.

"What did you see in there?" Sana asked, her voice trembling.

Rylan hesitated, his fists clenched. "It's not over. Not even close."

The camera feed Zara had hacked into flickered on her screen. A single message appeared:

"See you soon, Rylan."

The shadow of Orion loomed larger than ever, and the team knew their fight was far from over.
