Chapter 162 - The Chase Begins

The explosion that followed Novak's words was deafening, a thunderous roar that shook the very foundations of the facility. Nathan, Sana, and Zara sprinted through the debris-littered hallways, their hearts pounding in their chests, their thoughts consumed by a single, terrifying truth: the countdown had already begun. Novak's plan was in motion, and they were racing against time to stop it.

They reached the exit, the facility's gates opening with a sudden, eerie groan. The force field had dropped, and the storm outside seemed to have intensified, as if the very air around them was alive with chaos. Dark clouds churned above, lightning flashing through the sky as the ground beneath them trembled, vibrating with the intensity of the energy building within the core of the facility.

"We have no time!" Sana shouted, her voice strained as she tugged at Nathan's arm, urging him to keep moving. "If we don't get out of here, we're all going to be caught in the blast."

Nathan's mind raced. The plan had been simple: find Novak, take him down, and destroy the Shadow Council's grip on the world. But now, with the core set to explode and Novak's manipulations coming to light, the game had changed. This was no longer about power struggles or politics. This was about survival.

"Zara, what's the situation?" Nathan asked, turning to their tech expert, who had been furiously working on her tablet ever since they escaped the building.

Zara's fingers flew over the screen as she analyzed the data, her face a mask of concentration. "The core's countdown is irreversible. It's linked to a series of failsafes. We need to reach the main control room, where the primary shutdown mechanism is located, but the facility's layout is changing. The paths are being sealed off."

Nathan cursed under his breath. The facility was a labyrinth, designed to trap intruders, and now it was working against them. With every step they took, the walls seemed to close in, the paths shifting, turning into dead ends, or worse, leading them into deadlier traps.

"We need to make it to the control room," Nathan said, determination setting into his voice. "Zara, can you guide us?"

"Already on it," Zara replied, her eyes never leaving the screen. "I've hacked into the system. I'll show you the safest route, but we need to move fast. The more time we waste, the harder it'll be to reach the core."

Without waiting for a response, Zara darted ahead, leading the group through the shifting corridors. Nathan and Sana followed closely, their senses heightened, their every step measured. The storm outside was nothing compared to the storm brewing inside the facility. The pressure was mounting, and every second that ticked away brought them closer to disaster.

The corridors twisted and turned, each path looking more identical than the last. The metallic walls seemed to hum with an unsettling energy, their cold surface reflecting the faint flickers of light that danced in the distance. It felt as though the very building was alive, closing in on them, trying to swallow them whole.

"This place is a maze," Sana muttered, her voice tight with frustration. "How are we supposed to find the control room in all of this?"

"We just keep moving forward," Nathan said, trying to keep his focus on the task at hand. "Zara's got us on the right track."

Zara glanced back, her face tense with concentration. "I'm rerouting the system's security protocols. But be prepared for anything. Novak's men are still inside, and they'll do anything to stop us from reaching the core."

Nathan's grip tightened around the handle of his weapon. He had expected resistance, but the reality of facing off against Novak's forces in a place like this was far more daunting than he had imagined. The walls seemed to pulse with energy, as if the facility itself was aware of their presence, aware that they were closing in on the heart of the storm.

Suddenly, a loud bang echoed through the corridor, followed by the unmistakable sound of footsteps โ€” heavy, deliberate, and coming closer.

"We've been spotted," Sana hissed. "We need to move faster."

But it was too late. Figures emerged from the shadows, their weapons raised, ready to strike. The mercenaries, loyal to Novak, were blocking their path, their eyes filled with cold, determined malice.

Nathan took a deep breath, his heart pounding. This was it. The moment they had been dreading.

Without hesitation, Nathan dove into action. He grabbed a nearby piece of debris and hurled it at the first mercenary, knocking the man off balance. The others rushed forward, but they were no match for the fury that Nathan unleashed. His movements were precise, honed by years of training, but there was something more driving him now โ€” the knowledge that every second counted, and every life lost would be another step closer to Novak's victory.

Sana fought alongside him, her movements fluid and quick. She didn't need to be told what to do; she was already in sync with him, each strike a testament to their partnership. Zara stayed close, her tech skills now more important than ever. She was working on something, her fingers flying across her device, her eyes scanning the data with a speed and accuracy that was almost inhuman.

"We don't have time for this," Zara muttered, her voice laced with urgency. "I'm almost through the security system, but I need you to buy me more time."

Nathan nodded, pushing forward as he dispatched the last of the mercenaries blocking their path. They couldn't afford to slow down, not now. The core was ticking, and Novak's plan was coming to fruition.

As they continued down the corridor, the sounds of the battle faded behind them. It was just the three of them now, racing toward the heart of the facility. The walls were closing in, and the countdown was getting louder in Nathan's ears. Each passing second brought them closer to the disaster Novak had set in motion.

They reached the final stretch a massive steel door that led to the control room. But it wasn't going to be easy. The door was reinforced, and the security system was still locked down. Zara was working as fast as she could, but the tension was palpable. Every movement, every keystroke, felt like it was taking an eternity.

"Come on, come on," Zara muttered under her breath, her fingers moving furiously over the screen. "I need another minute. Just one more minute."

Nathan's nerves were on edge. The storm outside had reached its peak, the sky now crackling with violent energy. The building seemed to shake as though it were about to collapse, and with every passing second, the countdown grew louder, more insistent.

"We can't wait," Sana said, her voice tense. "We have to force our way in."

Nathan shook his head. "If we do that, we'll trigger the fail-safes. The whole place will go into lockdown. We can't risk it."

Zara's eyes flickered with concentration. "Got it," she said, her voice calm despite the chaos. "The door's unlocked. You're clear to go in."

Without another word, Nathan grabbed the handle and swung the door open. The control room lay before them a vast chamber filled with consoles, flashing lights, and a massive central system that controlled the core. But standing in front of them, blocking their way, was a figure Nathan had been dreading to face.

Lucien stood at the center of the control room, a smug grin on his face as he turned to face them. "Did you really think you could stop it?" he asked, his voice dripping with disdain. "Novak may have been the mastermind, but I am the one who controls the countdown."

Nathan's blood ran cold. They were too late. The game was far from over.
