Chapter 154 - A Rift In The Team

The mission in The Vault had taken a toll on Nathan's team. Jay's escape and his final sabotage had left them shaken. As they retreated to their safe house, the tension was palpable. Everyone was exhausted, their nerves frayed from the constant threat of danger. But the real trouble wasn't outside it was brewing within.

Nathan paced the small room, his fists clenched. "We were so close," he muttered. "Jay played us like fools."

Sana sat on a worn-out couch, her arms crossed. "Maybe if someone had kept a better eye on him, we wouldn't have been blindsided," she snapped, her gaze fixed on Alex.

Alex shot back, his tone defensive. "Don't start with me, Sana. I was fighting off half a dozen guards while you were busy playing hero."

"Enough!" Nathan's voice boomed, silencing the argument. "This isn't the time to turn on each other."

But the damage was done. The cracks in their unity were starting to show.

As the team gathered around a makeshift table to discuss their next steps, the tension only grew.

"We have to admit it," Zara said, her voice hesitant. "Jay knew too much about our plans. Someone on the inside might have tipped him off."

Her words hung in the air like a bomb.

"Are you accusing one of us?" Mia asked, her tone sharp.

"I'm just saying it's a possibility," Zara replied, avoiding eye contact.

Nathan rubbed his temples. "We've been through too much to start doubting each other now."

"Have we?" Sana asked, her voice cold. "How do we know there isn't a traitor among us?"

The accusations created a ripple effect. Every glance, every word spoken was now laced with suspicion.

Mia leaned toward Nathan. "You know you can trust me, right?" she whispered.

Nathan nodded but didn't respond. He could see the same question in everyone's eyes: Who can we trust?

The team split into smaller groups, each retreating to their corners of the safe house. Zara buried herself in her laptop, analyzing the data they had managed to extract from The Vault. Sana and Mia spoke in hushed tones, while Alex sat by himself, cleaning his weapons.

Hours later, Zara called everyone back to the table. Her expression was grim.

"I've found something," she said.

She projected a screen onto the wall, displaying a list of names and locations. "This is part of what I recovered from The Vault. It's a roster of Shadow Council operatives."

Nathan leaned forward. "What's the catch?"

"Some of these names…" Zara hesitated. "They're connected to us. Friends, acquaintances, even family members."

The room fell silent.

"Are you saying the council has been using people close to us as spies?" Mia asked.

Zara nodded. "It's possible. They could be blackmailing them, paying them off, or even manipulating them without their knowledge."

Sana's eyes narrowed as she looked at Alex. "Convenient, isn't it? Your brother was part of the council, and now we find out they've been recruiting people from our circles."

Alex slammed his fist on the table. "You think I'm a traitor? After everything I've done for this team?"

"Your connection to the council is too close for comfort," Sana shot back.

"Stop it, both of you!" Nathan shouted. "This is exactly what they want to tear us apart from the inside."

But the seeds of doubt had already been planted.

Later that night, Nathan found Alex packing a bag.

"What are you doing?" Nathan asked.

"I'm leaving," Alex replied without looking up. "It's clear I'm not welcome here anymore."

"You can't just walk away," Nathan said. "We need you."

Alex turned to face him, his expression hard. "Do you? Or am I just another liability?"

Nathan sighed. "I don't know who to trust right now, but I know we can't afford to lose you."

Alex hesitated, his resolve wavering. "If I stay, it's under one condition. You keep Sana off my back."

"I'll handle it," Nathan promised.

While Nathan dealt with Alex, Sana and Mia had a secret conversation.

"You saw how defensive he got," Sana said. "He's hiding something."

Mia nodded. "But what if we're wrong? What if he's innocent?"

"Then we'll apologize later," Sana replied. "But we can't ignore the possibility that he's working against us."

The two women agreed to keep a closer eye on Alex, even if it meant going behind Nathan's back.

As the team prepared for their next mission, Zara approached Nathan with a worried look.

"There's something else you need to see," she said, showing him her laptop.

On the screen was a surveillance feed from The Vault. It showed Jay speaking to someone a figure in a hood, their face obscured.

"This was recorded just before we arrived," Zara explained. "Whoever this is, they're working with Jay."

Nathan stared at the screen, his mind racing. "Can you enhance the image?"

Zara nodded and began working. As the figure's face came into focus, Nathan's heart sank.

"No," he whispered.

The face on the screen was someone he knew someone from the team.
