Chereads / The Secret Marriage Pact / Chapter 144 - An Unexpected Ally

Chapter 144 - An Unexpected Ally

Nathan's heart pounded as the heavy steel door slammed shut behind them, the sound echoing through the cold, dimly lit underground bunker. His hand instinctively went to the gun holstered at his side, but the air was thick with tension, and he could feel Zara's eyes on him, her hand hovering near her own weapon. The footsteps were growing louder, coming closer.

He didn't like the feeling in his gut. He had seen what Evelyn's people could do, the cruelty and precision with which they operated. They had fought tooth and nail to survive the chaos so far, but now, in the belly of an unknown fortress, they were vulnerable. They had no idea who or what was on the other side of that door.

Zara leaned in, her voice low and urgent. "What now? Do we fight or run?"

Before Nathan could answer, the footsteps stopped abruptly, just beyond the door. Then, a voice, rough but calm, spoke from the darkness.

"I wouldn't move if I were you."

Nathan froze. The voice wasn't one he recognized, but it wasn't hostile either. It was neutral, measured, almost as if the speaker had been expecting them. But how? How could anyone know they were coming?

"We've been watching you," the voice continued. "And we've been waiting."

Zara's eyes darted around, but Nathan's mind was already racing. They weren't alone down here. And whoever had been waiting for them clearly knew more than they should.

"Who are you?" Nathan demanded, his voice steady but carrying a trace of suspicion.

The figure behind the door didn't answer immediately. Instead, there was a soft, almost imperceptible sound like the scraping of metal against stone and then, the door slid open with a hiss. A shadowed figure stepped inside, silhouetted against the dim light spilling from the room behind them.

Nathan tensed, ready for anything. The figure was tall, their face hidden beneath a hood. The person moved with purpose, but there was no hint of aggression in their stance. They were neither threatening nor comforting just an unknown presence in an already chaotic world.

"Are you with Evelyn?" Nathan asked, his grip tightening on his weapon. He couldn't afford to take chances.

The figure's eyes flashed, but the voice remained calm. "No. I'm not with her. But I might be able to help you. If you're willing to listen."

Zara shot Nathan a skeptical glance. He could tell she was just as confused as he was. The air in the bunker had shifted; what started as a place of desperation and survival now felt like a crossroads. Should they trust this stranger? Or was this another trap? Evelyn had so many eyes everywhere who knew who could be working for her?

Nathan was about to speak again when the figure raised a hand, signaling for silence.

"I know you have questions," the stranger said. "And I know you don't trust me. But you're running out of time. Evelyn's plans are already in motion. You can't stop her without the right help, and I'm the only one who can provide it."

Zara scoffed. "And why should we believe you?"

The stranger stepped closer, lowering their hood, revealing a face that was both familiar and strange. Nathan's breath caught in his throat.

It was a face he hadn't seen in years.

"Liam?" Nathan whispered, his voice a mix of disbelief and shock.

Liam stood before them, his eyes heavy with the weight of everything that had transpired. The man who had once led them into battle against Evelyn's forces was now here, standing in front of him, but he was different. There was a hardness in his eyes, a layer of uncertainty, as if the world they had all known had been stripped away, leaving only the raw remnants of what remained.

"You," Zara said, her voice sharp. "You were supposed to be dead."

Liam smiled faintly, the corners of his lips twitching. "It's a long story. And not one I'm eager to explain right now."

Nathan still couldn't wrap his mind around it. The last time he had seen Liam, he had been captured by Evelyn's forces, presumed lost. And yet, here he was alive, and apparently willing to help.

"You've been working against her?" Nathan asked, disbelief still lacing his words.

Liam nodded, his expression serious. "I never agreed with what she was doing. But after everything, after the lies and manipulation, I knew I had to break free. I've been operating in the shadows ever since. Watching. Waiting."

The weight of Liam's words settled in Nathan's chest. Evelyn had always been a master at manipulation, pulling strings behind the scenes. But Nathan had never imagined that someone so close to her would break away, choosing to fight against the very system he had helped build.

"Why now?" Zara pressed. "Why are you helping us?"

Liam's eyes softened for a moment, but then he looked away. "Because I owe you. And because I see the potential in stopping Evelyn's plan. She's far too dangerous to leave unchecked. If we don't act now, we might not have a world to save."

Nathan's mind spun as he processed Liam's words. Could they really trust him? Was this some kind of manipulation? Or was this their only shot at stopping Evelyn?

The room seemed to grow colder, and the sound of distant explosions echoed from far away, reminding them that the world outside was on the edge of collapse. The time to make decisions was running out.

"I'm not saying we can't work together," Nathan said, his voice cautious. "But we need a plan. What do you know that we don't?"

Liam's eyes darkened as he looked at Nathan. "Evelyn has a weapon. A powerful one. It's not just about control anymore it's about domination. She's on the verge of bringing the entire world under her influence. And once she does, there will be no stopping her."

Nathan's blood ran cold. A weapon. He had suspected as much, but hearing it out loud made it all the more real. This was no longer just about survival. This was about stopping a global catastrophe.

"Where is this weapon?" Zara demanded. "How do we stop it?"

Liam hesitated for a moment, then spoke, his voice low and urgent. "It's hidden. But I know where it's being kept. I've tracked its movements, and I can get you inside. But you'll need to move quickly. Evelyn's forces are already converging on the location. Once she activates it, it will be too late."

Nathan's pulse quickened. They had no time to waste. They had to make their move now, before Evelyn could carry out whatever plan she had set in motion. But despite the urgency, there was still so much they didn't know.

"Why are you telling us all of this?" Nathan asked, his suspicion rising again. "What's in it for you?"

Liam's gaze darkened further, and he stepped closer, lowering his voice to a whisper. "Because if she succeeds, there won't be anyone left to rebuild. And I don't want to live in a world like that."

Before Nathan could respond, a loud crash sounded from deeper within the bunker. The door they had entered through groaned under the pressure of something heavy. Then, without warning, the wall behind them exploded inward, sending shards of concrete and metal flying across the room.

Nathan's instincts kicked in. He shoved Zara behind him, pulling out his weapon as chaos erupted around them. The room was suddenly filled with blinding light, and figures cloaked in dark armor stormed through the wreckage, weapons drawn.

Liam's face paled as he turned to Nathan. "It's too late. They found us."

As the armored figures close in, leaving Nathan and his team with no choice but to fight their way out or risk being captured and worse. The clock was ticking, and this unexpected ally might be their only chance at survival. But would they be able to escape the chaos before it was too late?
