Chapter 142 - A New Order

The smoke from the explosion still lingered in the air as Nathan blinked, trying to clear his vision. His head felt heavy, and his ears rang with a deafening hum. His body was sprawled on the ground, every muscle screaming in protest, but he pushed through the pain. He couldn't afford to lose consciousness, not now.

For a moment, everything was a blur. The chaotic sounds of the explosion still echoed in his mind, but the dust and debris around him made it hard to focus. Slowly, he sat up, his hand pressed against the cold ground for support. His surroundings were in shambles the once-dominant structure now reduced to rubble. The world felt like it was breaking apart.

"Zara? Kane?" Nathan croaked, his voice hoarse from the blast. He strained his neck to look around, but all he could see was chaos.

A faint groan came from his right, followed by the sound of shuffling. He quickly turned toward it and saw Zara, her form half-covered in debris but still conscious. Her eyes fluttered open as she pushed the rubble off her body, her breathing labored but steady.

"Nathan?" she rasped, her hand reaching for him. "Is it over?"

Nathan shook his head, his gaze scanning the wreckage. The world around them seemed to pulse with tension, like a fragile thread holding everything together, just waiting to snap. "It's far from over. We've got to move. Kane—where's Kane?"

Zara's eyes darted around, her expression growing more worried. "I don't know. I can't see him."

Before they could say anything more, a shadow loomed over them. Nathan immediately tensed, his hand instinctively going to his side, searching for a weapon. But there was no need. Kane staggered into view, his face bruised but alive, his eyes wide with shock. He was holding his side, where blood stained his shirt.

"Damn… that was too close," Kane muttered, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. "Are you two okay?"

Zara stood up, helping Nathan to his feet. "We're alive. But the real question is—what just happened? That explosion… It was like the ground itself was fighting against us."

Nathan shook his head, disbelief in his eyes. "Evelyn… she did this. But why? Why would she ?"

Kane cut him off, his voice cold and filled with anger. "She wanted to destroy us. She activated the weapon. I saw it in her eyes—the look of someone who had already won. She's always been one step ahead."

Nathan clenched his fists. He could still feel the heat from the explosion in his bones, the shockwave still rattling his mind. Evelyn had always been manipulative, but this? This was different. She wasn't just trying to take them down she was trying to rewrite the world.

Zara, sensing the weight of their situation, spoke up. "The weapon… it's not just any weapon, is it? It's part of something bigger."

Nathan's gaze shifted toward the horizon. The faint glow from the destroyed facility still flickered in the distance. The weapon had been designed to cripple not just them, but the world itself. And from the look on Evelyn's face before the explosion, she hadn't been aiming to stop the revolution—they were just pawns in a much larger game.

"We have to find her," Nathan said, his voice dark with determination. "She's still out there, and we need to stop her. But we can't do it alone."

As they began to move, the ground beneath their feet felt unstable, like the entire world was crumbling. The explosions had caused more damage than they realized. Entire sections of the once-powerful stronghold were reduced to rubble, leaving nothing but destruction in their wake.

Despite the chaos, they pressed on. The facility that once held the Council's greatest assets now lay in ruins. They had to assume the worst Evelyn had unleashed the weapon and was already on her way to the next phase of her plan.

"We need to get to the control room," Zara suggested, her tone practical, even as her body showed signs of exhaustion. "It's the only way we can trace where she's going next."

Nathan nodded. They knew time was running out. If they couldn't intercept Evelyn, there would be no stopping her from enacting whatever twisted vision she had in mind.

They moved quickly, ducking behind cover as the sounds of distant gunfire echoed from the wreckage. The Council's enforcers were still in pursuit, though it seemed they were more scattered now, disorganized by the blast.

"Stay close," Kane instructed, his voice sharp. "We need to find cover and gather intel before we make our next move."

They ran through the debris-strewn corridors, their movements quick but calculated. Every corner they turned, every new hallway they explored, seemed to bring them closer to a grim truth: Evelyn wasn't just after power. She wanted to reshape everything.

As they approached the control room, Nathan's mind raced. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into a trap. The silence of the place was deafening, the quiet after the storm almost suffocating. It didn't feel right.

The door to the control room loomed in front of them, and Nathan hesitated for a moment. "This feels wrong," he murmured.

But there was no time to second-guess. Zara stepped forward, her hand already on the door's controls. The door slid open with a mechanical hiss, revealing the dimly lit room beyond. It was eerily quiet, the only sound the hum of broken machinery.

The room was empty. Or so it seemed.

Before Nathan could take another step, the lights flickered to life, bathing the room in a cold, sterile glow. And there, standing in the center of the room, was Evelyn. She was staring at them with a smug smile, as though she had been waiting for this moment.

"You're too late," she said, her voice smooth and composed, like she was talking to old friends, not enemies. "I've already set things in motion."

Nathan's heart sank. They were too late. They had no idea what Evelyn had done, but the certainty in her voice made it clear—it was already too late to stop her.

Evelyn stepped toward them, the faintest hint of amusement dancing in her eyes. "I'm not here to kill you. Not yet, anyway. You see, what you don't understand is that you've been playing into my hands all along."

Nathan's mind raced. What was she talking about? They had fought tooth and nail against the Council, against everything Evelyn had stood for. How could they have been part of her plan?

"You thought this was about power, didn't you?" Evelyn continued, her eyes locking with Nathan's. "About stopping me. But the truth is, you've only ever been part of the game. The real prize, Nathan… the real power… is already in my grasp."

Kane stepped forward, his fists clenched. "What are you talking about?"

Evelyn laughed softly, the sound sending chills down Nathan's spine. "The Council was always just a means to an end. The real power lies in control—control of everything. And with what I've set in motion, no one will be able to stop me. Not you. Not anyone."

Suddenly, the room began to shake, and the floor beneath their feet rumbled as if the entire facility was reacting to her words. Nathan's heart raced. Was this it? Had they failed? Was the world truly about to change forever?

"You can try to stop me," Evelyn said, her voice growing colder. "But in the end, it won't matter. A new order is coming. And there's nothing you can do to stop it."

As the ground trembled beneath them, Nathan's eyes widened in realization. The weapon Evelyn had activated, the one that had caused the explosion, wasn't just a weapon it was a signal. And that signal was calling something far worse than they could imagine.

Before they could react, the walls of the control room cracked, and the ceiling began to crumble. A loud, screeching noise filled the air, and Nathan's world went dark as debris rained down upon them.

The last thing Nathan heard before everything went silent was Evelyn's chilling voice.

"You've made your choice," she whispered. "And now, you'll pay the price."

As everything goes dark, leaving Nathan and his team trapped in a collapsing facility, unaware of the horrors that are about to unfold.
