Chapter 139 - The Last Stand

Nathan's body ached as he awoke in a dimly lit chamber. His hands were chained to a metal chair, the cold bite of steel sending chills through his spine. The room smelled of damp stone and fear, and the faint hum of machinery filled the air. Across from him stood Evelyn, her expression a mix of amusement and triumph.

"Welcome back, Nathan," she said mockingly. "You've been quite the thorn in my side. But it ends here."

Nathan's jaw clenched. "If you think I'll give up, you don't know me."

Evelyn chuckled. "Oh, I know you all too well. That's why I've made preparations. You won't leave this room alive."

Meanwhile, Zara woke in a separate chamber, her wrists bound but her mind racing. The portable drive with the Council's data was tucked into a hidden pocket in her jacket. Evelyn hadn't noticed it during the chaos, and that was their only advantage.

She scanned the room, searching for anything she could use to free herself. Her eyes landed on a jagged piece of metal near the edge of the room. Wriggling her hands toward it, she focused all her energy on reaching it.

"I'm not letting this end here," she muttered, gritting her teeth.

Elsewhere, Kane was on the move. He had barely escaped the ambush, but the chaos he'd created had bought Nathan and Zara precious time. Now, he was back in the stronghold, weaving through its hidden passageways.

Kane wasn't one for heroics, but something about Nathan's relentless drive had sparked a sense of loyalty in him. If they were going down, they weren't going alone.

Finding a control room, Kane hacked into the stronghold's surveillance system. He saw Nathan restrained in one chamber, Zara in another, and Evelyn moving with her guards. "Time to stir the pot," he muttered, shutting off power to parts of the building.

Back in the chamber, Evelyn circled Nathan like a predator savoring its prey.

"You've always been so righteous, Nathan. But righteousness won't save you. The Council's grip is too strong. Even if you destroy this place, others will rise to take its place."

Nathan's voice was steady. "Maybe. But people like me will always rise too. And we'll keep fighting."

Evelyn's smirk faltered briefly. "Such noble words. But nobility won't protect your friends. Zara, Kane, the others—they'll all die because of you."

Zara finally managed to cut through her restraints. Her wrists were raw and bleeding, but she didn't care. She retrieved the portable drive and moved quietly toward the door, listening for footsteps.

Using her hacking device, she unlocked the door and stepped into the corridor. Alarms blared, and red lights flashed, but she kept moving. She had one goal: reunite with Nathan and finish what they started.

Kane burst into Nathan's chamber just as Evelyn raised her weapon. The sound of the door crashing open startled her, and she spun around.

"Ah, Kane," she said, her tone laced with sarcasm. "I should've known you'd switch sides. Again."

Kane grinned. "What can I say? I like to keep things interesting."

Before Evelyn could react, Kane fired a shot, hitting the chains that bound Nathan. The metal snapped, and Nathan leapt to his feet. Together, they stood against Evelyn and her guards.

"You're outnumbered," Evelyn said, her confidence unwavering.

"Maybe," Nathan replied. "But we're not outmatched."

The room erupted into chaos. Nathan and Kane fought fiercely, using every ounce of their strength to take down the guards. Evelyn slipped out during the commotion, her eyes burning with rage.

Zara appeared in the doorway moments later, holding a makeshift weapon. "Need a hand?" she called, joining the fray.

Together, the trio pushed back the guards, their teamwork and determination overpowering the opposition.

Once the room was cleared, Zara revealed the portable drive. "I have the data. Everything we need to bring the Council down."

"Good," Nathan said. "But we're not done. Evelyn won't stop until we're dead. We have to finish this."

Kane nodded. "Then let's make it count."

The group moved deeper into the stronghold, following Zara's map of the facility. Their goal was the central control room, where they could broadcast the Council's secrets to the world.

They found Evelyn in the control room, her face a mask of fury. Behind her, a massive screen displayed the Council's emblem.

"You don't know when to quit, do you?" she snarled.

Nathan stepped forward. "This ends now, Evelyn. No more lies. No more manipulation."

Evelyn drew her weapon, but Kane was faster. He shot the gun out of her hand, and Zara disabled the control panel, cutting off her access to the stronghold's defenses.

"You've lost," Zara said firmly.

Evelyn's lips twisted into a cold smile. "Have I? Look around you. Do you think this will change anything? The Council is bigger than all of us. Even if you destroy me, the system will survive."

Nathan's voice was steady. "Maybe. But this is a start."

As they prepared to upload the data, a deafening explosion shook the room. Smoke filled the air, and the ceiling began to collapse.

Through the haze, a figure emerged—one of the Council's top enforcers, clad in advanced armor and wielding a deadly weapon.

Evelyn's smile returned. "Meet your doom, Nathan. The Council always has a backup plan."

Nathan, Zara, and Kane stared at the enforcer, their hearts pounding. They had come so far, but now the stakes were higher than ever.

The enforcer raising their weapon, ready to strike, as Nathan prepares to make a final stand.
