Chapter 131 - The Final Countdown

The night had never felt so heavy. The world outside was silent, but inside the safe house, tension rippled through the air like an electric current. Nathan's heart was pounding in his chest, his mind racing through every possible scenario. The steel door had slammed shut with an ominous thud, sealing them in. The Council's agents had surrounded them, and there was no way out.

He couldn't believe what had just happened. Alex, the person he thought he could trust, had turned on them. It was like a sick joke one that they had been playing for a while. Nathan's hand instinctively went to the gun in his holster, but he knew it wouldn't help them now. They were outnumbered, outgunned, and trapped in a corner.

He glanced at Zara, who was standing beside him, her eyes narrowed, her jaw clenched in anger. She was just as shocked as he was, but unlike Nathan, she wasn't frozen in place. She was already thinking two steps ahead, always calculating the next move.

"How did they find us?" Nathan whispered, his voice filled with disbelief.

Zara didn't answer right away. Instead, she scanned the room, her eyes darting from one corner to the next. The walls were made of solid concrete, and the only exit was the steel door they had just come through. But there was no use in trying to escape through that. Not with Alex and the others waiting on the other side.

"They've been tracking us," Zara muttered under her breath. "The Council has eyes everywhere. This place is rigged with sensors. They knew we were coming long before we even set foot in this tunnel."

Nathan's mind raced as he tried to process everything. The Council had been one step ahead of them from the beginning. They had infiltrated every layer of their plans, watching their every move. And now, with Alex turning against them, it seemed like there was no hope left. But Nathan wasn't about to give up. Not now. Not when so much was at stake.

"We need to find a way out of here," Nathan said, his voice hardening with resolve. "And we need to do it fast."

Zara nodded in agreement. "We don't have much time. They'll be here any minute."

Nathan turned to look at the steel door, his mind working furiously. There had to be another way. They couldn't let the Council win. Not like this. Not when they were so close.

He stepped forward, trying the door handle again, but as expected, it was locked tight. There was no way to break through it from this side. He was about to give up when he heard a faint sound a low click, followed by the hum of a hidden mechanism.

Zara's eyes widened. "There's a hidden exit. On the left side of the door. It's a secret passage. I knew this building was rigged with escape routes."

Nathan's heart leaped. This was their chance. He quickly moved to the left side of the door, pressing his ear against the wall. The faint sound of machinery whirring filled the air, and then, with a soft hiss, a small panel slid open, revealing a narrow passageway.

"We need to move. Now!" Nathan hissed.

Zara was already ahead of him, slipping through the opening like a shadow. Nathan followed close behind, the passageway dark and cramped. It felt like they were crawling through the bowels of the building, the walls closing in on them as they moved deeper into the unknown. The air was damp, and the smell of old pipes and concrete was overwhelming.

They didn't know where this passage would lead, but it was their only hope. Every step they took was filled with a sense of urgency. The Council was after them, and they couldn't afford to waste any more time.

As they moved through the narrow passage, Nathan's mind kept drifting back to Alex. How could he betray them like this? Alex had been a part of their team, someone who they thought they could trust. But now, it seemed like everything had been a lie. Alex had been working for the Council all along, feeding them information, leading them straight into a trap.

Nathan shook his head, trying to push the thought aside. There was no time to dwell on that now. They had to focus on surviving.

"Keep going," Zara urged, her voice sharp with determination. "We're almost there."

Nathan nodded, his pulse quickening. He didn't know where 'there' was, but he trusted Zara. She had always been the one with the plan, the one who kept them grounded. He just had to follow her lead.

The passage opened up into a larger room, and for a moment, Nathan thought they had reached a dead end. But then Zara moved to the side, revealing a small metal door hidden in the shadows.

"This is it," Zara whispered, her eyes scanning the room. "This leads to a safe house above ground. It's not far from here. But we'll have to be quick. If they're already looking for us, they'll be watching every exit."

Nathan's heart raced as he stepped forward, watching Zara unlock the door with a small device she pulled from her pocket. She was fast, precise, and efficient—traits that Nathan had come to rely on.

The door creaked open, revealing a set of stairs that led up to the surface. As they climbed, Nathan's mind was flooded with a mix of fear and determination. They had to get out. They had to escape.

The air above ground was cold, the streets eerily silent. It felt like the calm before the storm. Zara glanced around cautiously before leading the way down the street.

Nathan followed closely behind, his senses on high alert. They were out, but they weren't safe. Not yet.

"Do you think we lost them?" Nathan asked, his voice low.

Zara didn't respond immediately. She was too focused, too alert. But after a few moments, she shook her head.

"No. They know exactly where we are. They'll come for us. It's only a matter of time."

Nathan's stomach tightened. He had known this wouldn't be easy, but the reality of it was hitting him harder than he expected. The Council was relentless. They wouldn't stop until they had them both. And that meant that every minute they spent running was another minute closer to the inevitable confrontation.

They reached an alleyway and ducked into it, hoping to find some cover before they were spotted. Nathan could hear the sound of distant footsteps, growing louder with each passing second. They were closing in.

Zara stopped abruptly, turning to face Nathan. "We don't have much time," she said, her voice grave. "There's only one way out of this. We have to confront them. We have to end this now."

Nathan's mind was spinning. Confront them? They were outnumbered and outgunned. But there was no other choice. If they didn't take a stand now, they would never have another chance.

"Are you ready for this?" Zara asked, her eyes locking with his.

Nathan took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. "I'm ready."

Without another word, Zara pulled out her weapon, and they both stepped into the open. The alley was empty, but Nathan could feel the weight of the approaching storm. The Council was coming.

They didn't know what lay ahead, but one thing was clear: the final battle was about to begin.

And as they prepared for what would come, Nathan's thoughts flickered back to Alex. Could they trust anyone anymore? Was there anyone left who wasn't playing both sides?

As the sound of footsteps grew louder, Nathan tightened his grip on his gun. The final countdown had begun.

But just as they stepped forward to face the enemy, a sharp noise from behind made them both turn around.

A shadowy figure emerged from the darkness, and Nathan's blood ran cold.

"Hello, Nathan," the figure said, his voice cold and mocking.

It was Alex. And he wasn't alone.
