Chapter 106 - A Glimse Of The Past

The morning sun barely pierced through the dense trees, casting long shadows across the forest floor. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, a stark contrast to the tension that gripped Lucas and his team as they huddled in their makeshift base. A heavy silence hung over them as Zara paced back and forth, her mind racing through the events of the last few days. Nathaniel sat at a table, scanning the files they had gathered from Kane's network, his expression unreadable.

Lucas stood by the window, watching the shadows move as the breeze rustled the leaves. It was a perfect place to lay low, far from the prying eyes of Kane's men. But it was also a place that had come with its own set of mysteries mysteries Lucas wasn't sure he was ready to confront.

Lucas had always known there was more to the past than what he'd been told. He had grown up with stories of his family's legacy, but many of them seemed fragmented, incomplete. His mother had never spoken much about the family's history, and his father, when he was around, was always too focused on business to discuss anything personal. But the letter they had found in Kane's safe the one signed simply as "A" had struck a nerve. The letter hinted at something deeper, something Lucas needed to uncover, something that could change everything.

"Do you think Kane's secret has anything to do with your family?" Zara's voice broke through his thoughts. She had stopped pacing and was now standing across the room, watching him intently.

Lucas turned slowly, his mind racing. "I don't know," he admitted, his voice tinged with frustration. "But I need to find out. There's too much at stake."

Nathaniel, who had been silent up until now, looked up from his papers. "You've been avoiding the truth about your past for too long, Lucas. Maybe it's time to face it."

That night, after hours of discussing their next move, Lucas made a decision. He needed answers, and the only place he could get them was the old house the one that had once been the heart of his family's wealth and influence. It was hidden deep within the forest, far from any roads or highways. The house had been abandoned for years, ever since his family had fallen from grace. But Lucas remembered the stories his grandfather used to tell him—about the house, its secrets, and the things they had hidden there.

"I'm going to go," Lucas said finally, his voice firm. "The old house there's something there I need to see."

Zara exchanged a look with Nathaniel, but neither of them questioned him. They knew it was something Lucas had to do, even if it meant facing the ghosts of his past.

The journey to the house was long and treacherous. The roads were overgrown with weeds, and the path was barely visible through the thick trees. As they made their way deeper into the forest, Lucas couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. He kept his eyes on the road ahead, but his mind kept drifting back to the letter from Kane's safe.

The closer they got to the house, the more the memories began to flood back. He remembered running through the gardens as a child, playing with his siblings, and listening to his grandfather's stories. But it wasn't just the good memories that haunted him. There were darker ones too—the ones involving his father's temper, the secret meetings, and the strange disappearances that had plagued their family for years.

"We're almost there," Nathaniel said, breaking Lucas from his thoughts.

The old house finally came into view, its silhouette looming against the dark sky. It looked abandoned, decaying with age, but there was still something imposing about it—something that made Lucas's heart race.

As they stepped inside the house, the air was thick with dust, and the floor creaked beneath their feet. The once-grand staircase now looked like it might collapse at any moment. Lucas led the way, his mind focused on finding what he had come here for. He had no idea what he was looking for, but he felt a strange pull toward the hidden room his grandfather had mentioned.

"Over here," Lucas muttered, his voice low. He approached a faded portrait on the wall. It was a picture of his grandfather, standing tall and proud in front of the house. But what caught his attention wasn't the portrait—it was the small keyhole beneath it. It was barely noticeable, but Lucas's heart skipped a beat when he saw it.

Zara and Nathaniel joined him as he knelt down to inspect the keyhole. He had never seen it before. It was hidden so well, tucked behind the heavy frame of the painting. Lucas's hands trembled as he reached for the small key in his pocket—the key that had been passed down through generations. The key his grandfather had given him just before his death, with the words, "When the time is right, you'll know what to do."

With a deep breath, Lucas inserted the key into the lock. The mechanism clicked, and the wall creaked open to reveal a hidden staircase leading down into the darkness below.

The staircase was narrow and steep, the walls covered in old, peeling wallpaper. As they descended into the basement, the temperature dropped, and a musty smell filled the air. The room at the bottom was small, but what it contained was enough to make Lucas's heart stop.

In the center of the room was a large wooden chest, covered in dust and cobwebs. It was old, clearly ancient, but it felt out of place in the basement. Lucas approached it cautiously, his hand trembling as he reached for the lid. He hesitated for a moment, unsure if he was ready to face what lay inside.

"This is it," Zara whispered, her voice filled with awe. "This is what you've been looking for, isn't it?"

Lucas nodded, his heart pounding in his chest. With a deep breath, he opened the chest.

Inside, there were papers dozens of them. Old documents, photographs, and letters, all yellowed with age. As Lucas sifted through them, he felt a wave of nausea wash over him. These weren't just family documents. They were records of secret meetings, business deals, and a name that kept appearing over and over again Kane.

He felt a cold shiver run down his spine. "Kane was involved with my family… from the very beginning."

Zara and Nathaniel leaned in, studying the papers. There were contracts, dates, and locations proof of a partnership that went back years. But the most disturbing part was the final document. It was a letter, written in a hand he recognized. It was from his father.

"I'm not sure if I can trust you anymore," the letter read. "But I have no choice. We've gone too far to turn back now. The plan is set. Kane will be the one to lead the family's future, not me. You must do everything you can to help him."

Lucas's hands shook as he read the letter aloud, his voice barely above a whisper. "My father… he betrayed everything. He handed the family over to Kane."

Zara's eyes widened in shock. "This changes everything. It wasn't just business it was a power grab."

Nathaniel's face hardened. "And you've been part of it all along, Lucas. Your family's connection to Kane runs deeper than we thought."

Just as Lucas tried to process the revelation, a loud crash echoed from above. They froze, the sound of footsteps growing louder. Someone was in the house.

"Someone's here," Lucas whispered urgently. "We need to get out, now."

But before they could move, the door to the basement slammed shut with a deafening bang. The three of them spun around to find a shadow standing in the doorway.

It was Kane.

And the real battle was just beginning.
