Chapter 70 - Spying Eyes

The tension was thick as Amelia and Lucas stood in the darkened hallway of Lucas's family estate. The photograph of Amelia as a child, taken years ago, still lay in Lucas's hand. It didn't make any sense. How could her father's face be in a box of hidden documents at Lucas's family home?

"I don't understand," Amelia whispered, more to herself than to Lucas. "How does my father fit into this? Why would they have a picture of me?"

Lucas, still reeling from the discovery, didn't have an answer. He placed the photograph carefully back into the box and closed it. "We need to get out of here, now," he said urgently, looking toward the hallway.

Amelia nodded, her heart racing. The photo of her father was unsettling, but the sounds of approaching footsteps made it clear that they didn't have time to investigate further. They needed to escape before whoever was coming found them snooping around the estate.

As they hurried toward the back door, Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. It was a feeling she had been trying to ignore for days, but it was growing stronger with each passing second. Someone was keeping an eye on them, and they had to figure out who before it was too late.

"Lucas, do you think someone knows we're here?" Amelia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lucas's eyes darted around the dimly lit hallway, every shadow seeming to move with their footsteps. "I'm starting to think that maybe we've been under surveillance for longer than we realized."

They reached the back door, but as Lucas tried the handle, it didn't budge. The door was locked from the outside.

"Damn it," he muttered. "We're trapped."

Amelia's heart skipped a beat. The air around them felt heavy, suffocating. They had no choice but to find another way out.

The sound of footsteps grew louder, closer, and with each step, Amelia's sense of urgency grew. They couldn't afford to be caught now. They had to move fast.

"Follow me," Lucas said, grabbing her hand. He led her toward the study, where they could hide for a moment and figure out their next move.

As they ducked into the study, Amelia noticed the familiar surroundings—the large mahogany desk, the bookshelves lined with volumes of legal and business texts, the leather chairs. But something felt off.

"Lucas, do you feel that?" Amelia asked, her voice trembling.

Lucas's eyes narrowed as he scanned the room. "What do you mean?"

"Like we're not alone. Like someone's watching us."

Lucas walked over to the window, peeking through the blinds. He froze when he saw a dark silhouette outside, standing motionless in the garden.

Amelia's breath caught in her throat. "Who is that?"

Lucas didn't answer immediately. His mind raced, trying to piece together everything that had been happening. "I think we've been followed. Someone's been watching us ever since we arrived here."

Amelia's stomach twisted in knots. "This isn't just a coincidence, is it? Someone is trying to stop us from finding the truth."

Lucas clenched his fists. "I knew this wouldn't be easy, but I didn't think they'd be this bold."

They had barely begun to make sense of the mystery when the sound of a door creaking open echoed from somewhere in the house.

"Someone's inside," Amelia whispered, her pulse quickening.

"I'll check it out," Lucas said, his voice steady despite the growing tension. "Stay here. Don't make a sound."

Amelia nodded, but her mind raced. Who could it be? Who was watching them, and what did they want?

As Lucas crept out of the study, Amelia tried to calm herself, taking deep breaths. She moved to the corner of the room, trying to make herself as small as possible. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone was very close—closer than she realized.

Suddenly, a soft clicking sound broke the silence. Amelia froze, her heart hammering in her chest. It was the unmistakable sound of a camera lens.

Her eyes darted to the corner of the room, and her breath caught. A small, hidden camera had been planted on a shelf, its red light blinking, indicating it was recording.

"No…" Amelia gasped under her breath. Someone had been spying on them. She wasn't just imagining it.

She reached for her phone to alert Lucas, but before she could move, she heard a voice from behind her.

"You're not as clever as you think, Amelia."

She spun around, her heart leaping into her throat. Standing in the doorway was a figure she had hoped never to see again: Victoria.

Amelia's body went cold. "How long have you been watching us?" she demanded, trying to steady her voice.

Victoria smirked, crossing the threshold of the study. "Long enough to know you're digging in the wrong places. You should have stayed out of this, Amelia. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into."

Amelia clenched her fists, her mind racing. She had thought they were being watched by a faceless enemy, but now it was clear: Victoria had been pulling the strings all along.

"You were behind the cameras? You've been spying on me?" Amelia asked, fury and fear mixing in her voice.

Victoria nodded, her expression cold. "I'm always one step ahead. I've been watching everything you and Lucas do. You have no idea how far I'll go to protect my interests."

Amelia took a step forward, unwilling to show weakness. "Why are you doing this, Victoria? What's your endgame?"

Victoria's lips curled into a smile. "You'll find out soon enough. But not before it's too late."

Just then, Lucas burst into the room, his eyes narrowed as he took in the situation. He reached for his phone, ready to call for backup.

Victoria's smile widened as she stepped back, her gaze flickering between them. "It's already too late. You think you're in control, but you're not."

Amelia's blood ran cold as she realized what Victoria meant. They had underestimated her, and now they were trapped in a game they didn't fully understand.

Victoria turned and walked toward the door, her heels clicking sharply on the floor. "You should have stayed out of this, Amelia. You have no idea what you're up against. Now, prepare for what's coming."

Before she left, she paused, her back turned. "By the way, the surveillance cameras? They weren't just for you. They've been recording everything. Your every move. And someone is very interested in seeing what happens next."

Amelia felt a chill run down her spine. Who else was watching?

Victoria opened the door and paused one last time. "I hope you like surprises, Amelia. Because you're about to get the biggest one of your life."

With that, she was gone.

Lucas turned to Amelia, his face pale. "We need to move fast. I think the real danger is just beginning."

Suddenly, Amelia's phone buzzed. A message flashed on the screen:

"You should have never come here. It's too late now."

Amelia's heart stopped. The message had come from an unknown number. But what really sent a shiver down her spine was the photo attached—a photo of Lucas and her, taken just moments before, standing in the study.

Someone had been watching them all along.

Who was the mysterious person behind the message and what were they planning to do next?
