Chapter 53 - Amelia Discovers The Truth

Amelia sat in her office, staring at the folder that had been delivered anonymously. It had no markings, no indication of who sent it. Her heart pounded as she debated whether to open it. Something about the situation felt off, but her curiosity won over. She flipped it open and gasped at the contents.

Inside were documents detailing secret deals, hidden accounts, and correspondences that linked Victoria to a web of corruption much larger than Amelia had imagined. Among the papers was something that made Amelia's blood run cold evidence implicating Lucas in a deal she knew he would never agree to.

"Lucas wouldn't do this," she muttered, her fingers trembling as she turned the pages. The documents were expertly forged, but Amelia had spent enough time with Lucas to know his style, his signature, and his principles. These weren't his.

Still, the question remained: who had gone to such great lengths to frame him?

Amelia quickly scanned the documents for more clues. Dates and transactions stood out, but one name kept appearing: The Broker. She remembered hearing whispers of this figure from Victoria's allies.

She grabbed her phone and dialed Lucas. His voice, calm despite everything, came through immediately.

"Amelia?" he asked. "Is everything okay?"

"No," she said, her voice urgent. "I've found something evidence tying you to illegal activities. But it's fake, Lucas. Someone's trying to frame you."

Lucas sighed, his exhaustion evident. "It's Victoria. She's desperate. But if this gets out, it could destroy everything we've worked for."

Amelia hesitated. "It's not just her, Lucas. The name The Broker keeps showing up. Do you know who that is?"

There was a long pause before Lucas replied, his voice low. "Yes. And if he's involved, things are worse than we thought."

Amelia felt a chill run down her spine. "What do you mean? Who is he?"

"The Broker isn't just a criminal," Lucas explained. "He's a manipulator, a master at turning allies into enemies. If he's working with Victoria, then she's not just targeting me she's targeting everyone close to me, including you."

Amelia's grip on the phone tightened. "Then we need to expose him. If we can prove his involvement, we can clear your name and stop Victoria."

"It's not that simple," Lucas warned. "The Broker operates in the shadows. No one knows his true identity. If you go after him, you'll be putting yourself in danger."

"I don't care," Amelia said firmly. "If I don't do something, we'll lose everything. I need to act."

Amelia spent the rest of the night piecing together the fragments of information she had. With every connection she made, the scale of the conspiracy became clearer. Victoria wasn't just trying to destroy Lucas's business; she was building a network of power that would leave her untouchable.

One document led Amelia to a name she didn't expect: Martin Hayes. He was a high-profile attorney with a reputation for playing both sides of the law. Amelia realized he might be the key to finding The Broker.

Without wasting time, she scheduled a meeting with Martin the next day.

The following afternoon, Amelia walked into a sleek office building and was escorted to Martin's corner office. He greeted her with a practiced smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Ms. Amelia," he said, gesturing for her to sit. "What can I do for you?"

Amelia didn't waste time. "I need information about The Broker. I know you've worked with him."

Martin's smile faltered, and his eyes narrowed. "That's a dangerous topic to bring up. Why are you asking?"

"Because he's trying to destroy someone I care about," Amelia said. "And if you know anything about him, you need to tell me. People's lives are at stake."

Martin leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. "The Broker doesn't like his name being thrown around. But you're persistent, I'll give you that."

Amelia leaned forward, her voice firm. "I don't have time for games. Either you help me, or I'll make sure the authorities know about your dealings with him."

Martin studied her for a moment before sighing. "Fine. But if this gets back to him, we're both dead."

Martin revealed that The Broker wasn't a single person but a network of individuals operating under one name. The group's power came from their ability to manipulate people and situations without ever revealing their true identities.

"They use pawns," Martin explained. "People who don't even know they're working for The Broker. And Victoria? She's just one of many. She thinks she's in control, but she's a tool, just like everyone else."

Amelia's heart sank. "So how do we stop them?"

Martin shook his head. "You don't. The best you can do is protect yourself and the people you care about. Anything else is suicide."

But Amelia wasn't ready to give up. "There has to be a way to expose them. If we can show the world who they really are—"

Martin cut her off. "You don't understand. If you push too hard, they'll come after you. And they won't stop until you're silenced."

Amelia's breath caught at Martin's words. His warning carried the weight of experience, but backing down wasn't an option. She couldn't let fear paralyze her.

"I understand the risk," she said firmly. "But I won't let them win. Lucas doesn't deserve this, and neither does anyone else they've hurt."

Martin leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "You're brave, I'll give you that. But bravery won't save you when The Broker comes knocking." He paused, his tone softening. "If you insist on going after them, you'll need allies. People you can trust absolutely. And even then, it might not be enough."

Amelia nodded. "Thank you for your honesty. Do you have anything anything at all that can give me a lead?"

Martin hesitated before pulling a card from his desk. He slid it across to her. "This is the only contact I know who might help you. But be careful. They don't trust easily, and neither should you."

Amelia took the card, her eyes scanning the name: Ethan Cross. It was a name she had never heard before, but the look on Martin's face told her this was someone significant.

That night, as Amelia sat in her car outside Lucas's office, she stared at the card in her hand. Was Ethan an ally or another danger waiting to strike? Every step forward felt like walking into quicksand, but she had no choice.

She was about to start the car when her phone buzzed. Another message lit up the screen.

"You've been warned, Amelia. Your time is running out."

Her heart pounded as she glanced in the rearview mirror. A shadow moved behind her car. Before she could react, the passenger door was yanked open.

A masked figure slid inside, pointing a weapon at her. "Drive. Now."
