Chapter 36 - A New Partnership

Amelia sat quietly in her office, staring at the papers in front of her. Her mind was racing, trying to process everything that had happened over the last few days. Lucas's defense had been a huge step, but it still felt like the ground beneath her was shifting. The walls seemed to be closing in as everyone she thought she could trust began to show cracks.

Her phone buzzed, pulling her out of her thoughts. She picked it up without looking at the screen, expecting another message from Lucas. But instead, it was a call from someone she didn't recognize. Amelia hesitated for a moment before answering.

"Hello?" she said, her voice steady, though a flicker of concern danced in her chest.

"Amelia," the voice on the other end was calm, but there was something cold about it. "It's me, Victoria."

Amelia's hand clenched around the phone. Victoria. The last person she ever wanted to hear from again.

"What do you want?" Amelia's voice was sharp, but there was an underlying uncertainty in her tone. She was not sure what game Victoria was playing now.

"I need you to listen," Victoria said, her voice more urgent now. "This has gone on long enough. I know you're trying to protect Lucas, but you're in over your head. The stakes are higher than you think."

Amelia felt her stomach drop. "What are you talking about?"

"Meet me," Victoria said. "I have something important to show you. Something that will change everything. You'll understand then."

Amelia was torn. She didn't trust Victoria, not in the slightest. But there was a hint of something in her voice that made Amelia pause. Victoria wasn't just calling to gloat; she was offering information. Amelia knew that whatever Victoria had, it could be a game-changer.

"If you want my help, you'll have to come to me," Amelia said, her voice cold. "I'm not running after you anymore."

There was a long pause on the other end. "Fine. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th Street at 8 pm tonight. Don't bring anyone. If you do, you'll regret it."

The line went dead before Amelia could respond. She stared at the phone in disbelief, her mind spinning. Victoria's sudden offer felt like a trap, but something told her that there was more to the story. If she didn't go, she might miss the chance to uncover something crucial.

As the hours passed, Amelia found it hard to focus on anything else. She knew the stakes were high, but what could Victoria possibly have to offer that could change everything? And why had she suddenly decided to make a deal now, after everything that had happened?

As the evening drew closer, Amelia found herself preparing for the meeting. She knew she couldn't go in unprepared, so she gathered her thoughts and made sure she had everything she might need. It wasn't like she could trust Victoria, but she wasn't going to walk in blind either.

The streets outside were darkening as the sun set, and the warehouse on 5th Street was located in an area that had been abandoned for years. It was the kind of place where secrets were kept and deals were made in the shadows.

Amelia arrived just before 8 pm, her heart pounding as she approached the warehouse. She looked around, half-expecting an ambush, but there was no sign of anyone. The silence was eerie, and the only sounds were the faint rustling of the wind and the distant hum of the city.

She hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. The large doors creaked as she pushed them open, revealing the dark interior of the warehouse. She didn't know what to expect, but she wasn't going to back out now. Her instincts told her she needed to know what Victoria was hiding.

As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she saw a figure standing at the far end of the room. It was Victoria, her silhouette barely visible in the shadows.

"You came," Victoria's voice was low, almost amused. She stepped forward, her face finally illuminated by the soft glow of a nearby light.

Amelia crossed her arms. "What is this all about?"

Victoria didn't answer right away. Instead, she motioned for Amelia to follow her deeper into the warehouse. Amelia's caution was on high alert, but she followed anyway, knowing she wouldn't get any answers if she didn't.

They stopped in front of an old, dusty table. On it, there were several folders, each one labeled with names Amelia recognized. Some of them were people she trusted; others were enemies she hadn't expected to be involved.

"This is what you need to see," Victoria said, tapping one of the folders. "This is the real reason everything has been happening. It's not about Lucas. It's about power. And you've been used as a pawn in a game you don't understand."

Amelia frowned. She didn't want to admit it, but part of her had always suspected that there was more going on than she had realized. "And what does that mean for me?"

Victoria's smile was faint but cruel. "It means you have a choice. You can keep playing the game the way it's been laid out for you, or you can join me. Together, we can take them all down. But you have to trust me."

Amelia felt a chill run down her spine. The offer was tempting, but it was also dangerous. Joining Victoria could give her the power she needed, but at what cost?

"Why should I trust you?" Amelia asked, her voice steady but filled with suspicion. "You've lied to me before."

"I'm not asking for trust," Victoria replied coldly. "I'm asking for a partnership. You're smart, Amelia. You've been playing both sides, but you can't win that way. You need to choose. This is your chance."

Amelia stood there, torn between her loyalty to Lucas and the pull of Victoria's offer. Her mind raced, but no matter how much she thought, the answer wasn't clear.

"I'll need time to think," she said finally, though she knew her decision wouldn't be easy.

Victoria didn't seem surprised by the response. She simply nodded. "Time is running out, Amelia. You'll have to decide soon."

Amelia turned to leave, but before she could take more than a few steps, Victoria's voice stopped her.

"You should know, Amelia. This isn't just about you. There's someone else involved. Someone you didn't see coming."

Amelia froze, her heart pounding. She spun around to face Victoria, but the woman was already walking away, disappearing into the shadows.

The words echoed in Amelia's mind. Someone you didn't see coming. Who was Victoria talking about?

Amelia felt a wave of unease wash over her. She had always been careful, always thought she knew who her allies and enemies were. But now, with Victoria's cryptic words hanging in the air, Amelia realized that the truth might be far more complicated than she ever imagined.

Her footsteps were quick and heavy as she left the warehouse, her thoughts in turmoil. She had more questions than answers, and now, more than ever, she felt like she was running out of time.

As Amelia made her way back to her car, the shadows seemed to stretch around her, hiding secrets that were still waiting to be uncovered. She could feel the weight of the choice pressing on her one decision could change everything.

But who could she really trust? And who was the mysterious person Victoria had been referring to?

Before she could process the questions racing through her mind, a shadow moved in front of her, blocking her path.

She froze, her breath catching in her throat.

"Amelia," a voice called softly.

And she recognized it immediately.

It was Lucas.
