Chapter 10 - 10 The Masked Intrusion

The square had quieted, the festive glow replaced by the smoldering remnants of overturned lanterns. Mina sat on a stone bench at the edge of the clearing, her thoughts churning as she tried to organize what she would say. Adrian and Clara stood a short distance away, the silence between them laden with unspoken words.

Adrian's gaze never left Mina. The firelight flickered across his face, highlighting the frustration and concern etched into his features. Clara, meanwhile, cast wary glances between the two of them, her expression a mix of confusion and unease.

"Mina," Adrian said finally, stepping closer. "No more dodging. What's going on? Who are you, and why do you keep talking about consequences and systems? I want the truth."

Mina closed her eyes, steeling herself. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her mind, but the reality of it was far more daunting. How could she explain the impossible without sounding insane?

"Warning: Stability Meter -4%. Prolonged silence increases deviation risk."

The System's cold voice pushed her into action. "All right," she said, her voice trembling but resolute. "I'll explain. But first, you both need to promise me something."

Clara frowned. "What is it?"

"That no matter how unbelievable this sounds, you'll hear me out. Everything I'm about to tell you is the truth, no matter how strange it seems."

Adrian exchanged a glance with Clara, then nodded. "Fine. We're listening."

---

Mina took a deep breath and began. "I'm not from here—not from this world. I woke up one day and found myself... pulled into this place. At first, I didn't understand what was happening, but then I heard a voice—a System. It told me this world was part of an unfinished story, one that had spiraled out of control because its characters had gone off their intended paths."

Clara's brow furrowed in confusion. "An unfinished story? What does that even mean?"

"It means this world—your world—was created for a purpose," Mina continued, her tone careful. "The System was designed to guide me in restoring the story to its original course. If I fail..." She hesitated, the weight of the words pressing down on her. "If I fail, the entire world could collapse."

Adrian's eyes narrowed. "Collapse? How?"

"I don't know all the details," Mina admitted. "The System only gives me pieces of information when it deems them necessary. But I do know that every deviation, every step off the intended path, causes instability. The Stability Meter measures how close we are to the tipping point. If it hits zero..." She trailed off, the implication clear.

Clara shook her head, her voice rising. "This is insane. How can we believe any of this?"

"I wouldn't blame you if you didn't," Mina said quietly. "But look around. Can you honestly say everything in your life has made sense lately? The glitches, the sudden changes in people's behavior... even tonight's attack. Does any of it feel natural to you?"

Clara opened her mouth to argue, but no words came out. Instead, she looked to Adrian, searching his face for reassurance.

Adrian, however, was focused entirely on Mina. "And where do I fit into this? What about Clara?"

Mina hesitated, her pulse quickening. This was the hardest part. "According to the System, you and Clara are the story's central figures—the male and female leads. Your relationship is supposed to be the anchor that keeps this world stable. But..."

"But what?" Adrian prompted, his voice sharp.

"But something went wrong," Mina admitted. "The System didn't expect you to... deviate."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Deviate how?"

Mina's cheeks flushed, but she forced herself to meet his gaze. "You were supposed to fall in love with Clara. But instead..." She swallowed hard. "Instead, you started falling for me."

The words hung in the air, heavy and inescapable.

---

Clara's face went pale, her hands clenching at her sides. "You're lying," she said, her voice shaking. "Adrian wouldn't... He wouldn't—"

Adrian turned to Clara, his expression unreadable. "Clara..."

Her eyes widened. "No. Don't you dare—"

"Clara, I care about you," Adrian said softly. "But Mina's right. Something changed. I can't explain it, but my feelings... they're not the same as they used to be."

Clara stumbled back, as though the admission had physically struck her. Her eyes brimmed with tears, and for a moment, Mina thought she might lash out.

Instead, Clara turned on her heel and ran, disappearing into the shadows.

"Clara, wait!" Adrian called after her, but she didn't stop.

Mina reached for his arm. "Let her go. She needs time to process this."

Adrian shook his head, his frustration evident. "This is a mess. I never wanted any of this to happen."

"Neither did I," Mina said, her voice laced with guilt. "But here we are. And now we have to figure out what to do next."

Adrian turned to her, his gaze searching. "Tell me something, Mina. Do you believe in this System? Do you trust it?"

Mina hesitated. The System had been her guide since she arrived in this world, but its motivations were opaque at best. "I don't know," she admitted. "Sometimes it feels like it's helping, but other times... I'm not so sure."

Adrian frowned. "Then why follow it?"

"Because the stakes are too high not to," Mina said. "Even if I don't trust the System, I can't ignore the possibility that it's telling the truth. If the Stability Meter reaches zero, it's not just this world that ends—it's everyone in it."

---

Their conversation was cut short by the sound of footsteps approaching. Adrian tensed, his hand moving to his sword, but relaxed when a familiar figure stepped into the light.

It was one of the festival guards, his face grim. "Lord Adrian, Lady Mina," the guard said, bowing slightly. "I bring news. The attackers we apprehended have been interrogated. They claim they were sent by someone who seeks to destabilize the kingdom."

Mina's stomach dropped. "Destabilize? How?"

"We're not sure," the guard admitted. "But they mentioned something about 'breaking the threads of fate.' Does that mean anything to you?"

Adrian's eyes flicked to Mina, his expression darkening. "More than I'd like."

The guard hesitated before adding, "There's one more thing. The attackers seemed... off, as though they weren't entirely in control of their actions. Some of my men think they were under some kind of spell."

Mina's mind raced. The System hadn't mentioned anything about outside forces manipulating the story. Could this be another deviation—or something worse?

"Thank you for letting us know," Adrian said. "Keep us updated."

The guard bowed again and left, leaving Mina and Adrian alone once more.

---

Adrian turned to Mina, his jaw set. "This changes everything. If someone is actively trying to disrupt this world, then we're not just dealing with a broken story—we're dealing with sabotage."

Mina nodded, her pulse quickening. "Which means we don't just need to fix the narrative. We need to find out who's behind this—and stop them."

Adrian's gaze softened as he looked at her. "You're not alone in this, Mina. Whatever happens, we'll face it together."

Mina's chest tightened at his words, but she forced herself to stay focused. There was too much at stake to let her emotions cloud her judgment.

"Together," she echoed. But even as she said it, she couldn't shake the feeling that the path ahead would test them in ways they couldn't yet imagine.
