Chapter 4 - The Bright Lights of Vegas

Alex's car pulled up in front of The Venetian Resort. The resort's replica of Venice's canals and architecture stood out in the heart of the city.

The Venetian was a massive resort, with marble statues and detailed facades. Inside, the lobby was grand, with chandeliers that sparkled like stars. Luxury shops and cafes lined the canal. Above, the ceiling mimicked the sky of Venice, giving the illusion of an open sky despite being indoors.

Alex handed his car keys to the valet and entered the lobby. He quickly checked in, receiving his keycard from the desk clerk with a polite smile.

Once inside his suite, he took a long bath, letting the warm water wash away the fatigue. The bathroom was luxurious, with marble counters and gold fixtures. Afterward, he changed into something comfortable and decided to go out and dine before retiring for the night.

His stomach growled, reminding him of his hunger. He had heard about a highly regarded fine-dining Italian restaurant nearby and figured tonight was a good night to treat himself.

The restaurant, Sinatra, was elegant, with dim lighting and walls lined with vintage photos of Frank Sinatra. The menu featured Italian-American classics, and Alex was eager to dive in.

A waiter in a crisp shirt and black vest approached his table. "Good evening, sir. May I start you off with a drink?"

Alex smiled. "Orange juice, please."

Alex looked over the menu and decided on a few items. He ordered the bruschetta to start, followed by a filet mignon with a side of creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. For dessert, he chose a tiramisu.

"Excellent choice, sir," the waiter said before walking off.

Alex was slowly sipping on his orange juice when he noticed several women in the room glancing his way.

"Lily, you there?" Alex inquired, but he did not get any response.

A petite woman, about 5'6", with soft features and a calm demeanor, was sitting alone at a table nearby. She caught his eye, then smiled at him shyly, her light brown hair cascading over her shoulders. She was about his age, and she's beautiful for Alex's strict standard.

After a brief moment of hesitation, she got up and approached him with a soft, yet confident smile.

"Excuse me," she said, her voice gentle but direct. "I couldn't help but notice you. Would you mind if I joined you for dinner?"

Alex raised an eyebrow, surprised by the sudden invitation. He hadn't expected this, but her direct manner made him feel at ease. "Sure, why not?" he replied, motioning toward the empty seat across from him. "I was just about to start."

She smiled again and sat down, folding her hands neatly in her lap. "Thank you," she said softly, her voice carrying the warmth of genuine curiosity. "I'm Charlotte."

"Alex," he replied with a small smile, adjusting his position in his seat.

His appetizer arrived: the bruschetta was fresh and light, with crispy toasted bread topped with diced tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze.

The waiter turned to take Charlotte's order. "Would you like the same as him, ma'am?" he asked.

"Yes, thank you," Charlotte nodded.

Once the waiter left, Alex looked at her and gave a casual nod. "So, what brings you to Vegas?"

Charlotte thought for a moment before answering. "I've always wanted to visit. I'm here for a short stay, just enjoying the sights and the food. I've heard good things about this place."

As Alex enjoyed his appetizer, each bite was refreshing, the flavors perfectly balanced. Charlotte's order arrived, and the two continued to talk.

Alex agreed. "Yeah, the Venetian's a bit of a getaway." He leaned back in his chair. "I'm here for the night, then heading out tomorrow. Vegas isn't really my usual scene, but I figured I might as well experience it."

"I know what you mean," Charlotte said. "I'm from Colorado, traveling when I have time and documenting it to share on social media."

"Oh really? I live in L.A."

The main course came next: the filet mignon was perfectly seared, tender and juicy, with a rich, savory flavor that melted in his mouth. The creamed spinach was rich and creamy, and the garlic mashed potatoes were smooth and flavorful, complementing the steak perfectly.

For dessert, the tiramisu was indulgent and delicious, layered with espresso-soaked ladyfingers, rich mascarpone, and a dusting of cocoa powder. Alex took his time with each bite, savoring the sweetness after the savory meal.

They shared a small laugh while eating, both feeling a connection over their shared amusement during high school.

As their conversation drifted from topic to topic, they finished up their meal, both lamenting that they were too young to enjoy wine.

Eventually, Charlotte leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful look in her eyes. "This has been really nice, Alex. Maybe we'll cross paths again, if fate allows it," she said with a soft smile.

Alex nodded, his own smile sincere. "I think that's the best way to look at it. If we're meant to meet again, we will."

She stood up, adjusting her dress. "Thank you for letting me join you. I hope the rest of your evening goes well."

"Same to you, Charlotte," Alex replied. "Enjoy your time here."

She gave a small wave as she walked away, disappearing into the crowd of the restaurant. Alex watched her leave, feeling oddly content. It was a fleeting encounter, but one that added a pleasant quality to his night in Vegas.

The meal was excellent, and the company made the experience even more enjoyable.

After finishing his meal, Alex walked around for a bit before deciding to ride a gondola. He'd never been to the city of Venice, Italy, but he hoped to visit someday.

As the gondola docked, Alex stepped back onto solid ground, a satisfied smile on his face. He returned to his suite, the bright lights of Vegas visible through his window. After a long day, he was ready to sleep. The bed was comfortable, and the pleasant smell in the room helped him drift off to sleep.
