The first light of dawn crept over Solhaven, tinting the battered town with hues of gold and rose. It would light upon the scars that the Abyss had left but would not warm or offer respite. Ryu sat on the edge of his cot, Voidfang slung over his lap. His fingers ran across the hilt idly, but his mind was elsewhere.
Even now, it still pulsed faintly in his pocket. It was living, its rhythm a second beat in his chest. The fact that it had begun reacting to him during battle scared him. Was it the strength he needed, or a threat? He felt no comfort in the unrest it caused.
A soft knock at his door wrenched him from his thought. "Ryu, breakfast," Aris whispered.
"Coming," he replied, rising and strapping Voidfang to his back.
