The caverns grew colder as Ryu and Aris ventured deeper, the bioluminescent fungi casting faint, shifting shadows across the jagged walls. The sound of the mysterious footsteps echoed ahead, their rhythm measured and deliberate. Each step seemed to challenge their resolve.
"Whatever it is," Aris whispered, her voice low, "it's not rushing to attack us. That makes it worse."
Ryu clutched the sword, and the etched runes were faintly aglow in the dim light. "Stay behind me," he said, his voice firm. "If it is another player, we will need to be cautious. If it is something else. well, we shall take care of that ourselves."
Around another curve they saw it was a tunnel opening into an enormous chamber. The roof was high above them and covered with stalactites dripping like emeralds with some uncanny green glow. The figure stood in the room's center, dressed in dark, weathered armor. They leaned against their spear planted in the earth, their head tilted forward as if listening to a voice no one else seemed to hear.
Another player," Aris whispered, but her hold on her daggers did not relax.
The figure raised their head, and a smirk spread across their face. "Took you long enough to get here," they said, their voice cool and taunting. "I was starting to think you wouldn't show."
Ryu frowned. "Who are you?
The player chuckled, pushing off the spear and stepping closer. "Name's Draven. And you two? You don't look like the usual idiots stumbling into these caves."
"That's because we're not here to die like them," Aris shot back, her tone sharp. "What do you want?"
Draven shrugged, and his smirk never faded. "Relax. I'm not here to pick a fight. yet. Just curious. Not many players have the guts to come this far, especially at your level."
Ryu narrowed his eyes. "Why are you here, then? This place isn't exactly beginner-friendly.
Information," Draven said bluntly, tapping the shaft of his spear against the ground. "This cave isn't just some random dungeon. It's part of a bigger puzzle. Something tied to the Nexus Keeper."
Aris blinked. "The Nexus Keeper? You mean the final boss?"
Draven grinned. "Exactly. Rumor has it, these caves hold a clue to the Nexus Keeper's location. But most players don't make it far enough to find out.
Ryu looked at Aris. Winning this game was tempting enough, but trusting a person she had never met—the fact that he was Draven made it a risk altogether.
"And you're giving this to us… why?" Ryu asked, a note of caution in his voice.
Draven grinned. "Let's say I like to keep life exciting. And you both seem. promising. I could use some extra hands to take on what's coming for us."
"Or you're looking for meat shields," Aris muttered under her breath.
Draven raised an eyebrow but didn't deny it.
Ryu weighed their options quickly. Turning back now wasn't an option—they needed stronger gear, experience, and any advantage they could find. If Draven was telling the truth, this might be their chance to get ahead.
"Fine," Ryu said, lowering his sword slightly. "We'll work with you. But if you try anything, you'll regret it."
Draven's smirk returned. "I like your style, kid. Let's get moving."
The trio ventured deeper into the caverns, the air growing colder with every step. Draven took the lead, his movements confident and calculated.
"So, what exactly are we looking for?" Aris asked, her eyes scanning the walls for anything out of place.
"An artifact," Draven said. "Something ancient, buried in these caves. The NPCs call it the Shard of Veilmoor. Supposedly, it's tied to the Nexus Keeper's power. Find the shard, and we might find the key to beating this game."
"Big if," Aris muttered, her skepticism clear.
The tunnels narrowed, forcing them to move single file. The faint sound of dripping water echoed around them, accompanied by a low, rumbling growl.
"Not again," Aris groaned, readying her daggers.
Draven smirked, raising his spear. "Looks like we've got company."
From the shadows, a pack of creatures emerged—undead wolves, their skeletal forms glinting faintly in the fungi's glow. Their hollow eyes burned with malice, and their claws scraped against the stone floor.
"Level 9," Ryu said grimly, checking their stats.
Perfect warm-up," Draven said, spinning his spear before lunging at the nearest wolf. His movements were fluid and precise, each strike landing with deadly efficiency.
Ryu and Aris joined the fray, working in tandem to keep the wolves at bay. Ryu's new sword cut through the undead with ease, the runes flaring brightly with each strike. Aris darted between the creatures, her daggers finding their weak points with practiced skill.
In moments, the wolves were reduced to ash, and the chamber was silent once more.
"Not bad," Draven said, dusting off his armor. "You two might actually survive this."
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Aris said dryly, wiping her blades clean.
As they progressed, the faint glow of the fungi gave way to a new light—a pulsing, crimson aura that seemed to seep from the walls themselves.
"We're close," Draven said, his tone uncharacteristically serious.
The tunnel opened into another chamber, this one dominated by a massive stone pedestal. At its center rested a jagged crystal shard, its surface glowing with an otherworldly light.
"The Shard of Veilmoor," Draven said, his voice almost reverent.
But as they drew nearer, the air became heavy, and a deep, guttural roar resonated through the chamber. From the shadows emerged a towering figure—a skeletal knight clad in rusted armor, its eyes blazing with crimson fire.
"Guardian of the shard," Ryu said, gripping his sword tightly. "Level 15."
Aris's eyes widened. "We can't fight that thing! It's way out of our league!"
Draven smirked, spinning his spear. "Relax. Stick to the plan, and we'll be fine."
"What plan?" Ryu demanded.
But before Draven could answer, the knight raised its massive sword, the blade crackling with dark energy.
"Guess we're about to find out," Ryu muttered, readying himself for the fight of his life.
