Chapter 26 - Shadows of The Abyss

Eclipse's guild hall erupted with life as members celebrated their monumental victory. Cheers came from every corner, guildmates raising mugs of digital ale and toasting their champions. Even the NPCs, attendants that bustled around, seemed lively with congratulatory phrases that came programmed into their dialogue.

Even with the jubilant mood, Ryu stood beside the pedestal with his mind elsewhere, far away from the revelry. The latest system announcement seemed to be repeating in his head like an ominous whisper.

[New Threat Looms in the Shadows…]

"Still plotting, huh?" Aris's voice cut into his musings. She came over, bearing two glasses containing something fizzy. She handed one to him, and then proceeded to sit comfortably against the pedestal. "You won the game's biggest tournament and are planning your next move already?

Ryu glanced at the glass but didn't drink. "We've made ourselves visible. Winning wasn't just about proving we're the best. It was a signal. To allies… and enemies."

Aris sipped her drink, her gaze sharp. "You're worried about The Shadow Reapers?"

"They'll strike back. But it's not them, alone. He motioned toward the guild-wide system announcement that still lingered in the interface. "This patch is not about the new areas, nor about the challenges. That 'new threat' is linked to them. I sense it."

Aris huffed and stirred her drink. "So no peace for the naughty."

Draven stepped in, his shield holstered, and a pleased smile spreading across his face. "You two plotting world domination over here? Or just scheming how to survive the next big bad?"

"Both," Aris said dryly.

"Great." Draven stretched, cracking his neck. "Because I just got a private message from someone you'll want to hear from."

Ryu turned to him, curiosity sparking. "Who?

Draven flipped his wrist, opening up his interface to reveal the message. A name he knew appeared on the screen: Eris.

Ryu narrowed his eyes. Eris had been one of their strongest rivals early on—a rogue who led The Silver Phoenix Guild. She was known for her cunning strategies and ruthless determination. Despite their competitive history, she had always maintained a degree of respect for Team Eclipse.

"What does she want?" Aris asked, her voice cautious.

Draven thumbed the message, unfolding its contents.

[Private Message: Eris]

Congratulations on your victory. Impressive as always. But if you think the tournament was tough, you haven't seen anything yet. Meet me at the Nexus Pavilion. There's something you need to know.

"Cryptic," Aris said, by way of commentary.

Ryu closed his menu, his jaw clenching. "We're going. If Eris has information, it's worth hearing."

Draven groaned. "Can't we at least enjoy the victory party for a little longer?"

"Later," Ryu said firmly.

The three slipped out of the guild hall, unnoticed in the chaos of celebration. They made their way through the crowded streets of the Nexus Pavilion, the central hub of the game for major interactions. Players in shining armor and colorful robes filled the plaza, trading, strategizing, and boasting about their exploits.

Eris was waiting for them near the fountain by the pavilion, the black and silver she wore already making her blend into shadows. She straightened a little as they approached; her amber eyes were always sharp.

"Ryu, Aris, Draven." She nodded a greeting. "Glad you came."

"Come on, get to the point," Ryu said. His tone was even, but firm. "What do you know?"

Eris crossed her arms. "The system update. It's not just adding new areas or quests. It's about balancing the game—except this time, it's not for the players' benefit."

Aris frowned. "What do you mean?"

Eris lowered her voice. "A new faction is rising—NPCs. And they're not your standard scripted enemies. They're adaptive, unpredictable, and they've already started targeting high-level guilds."

Ryu narrowed his eyes. "NPCs targeting players? How is that possible?

Eris hesitated, casting a glance around to ensure no one was listening in. "It's tied to the Abyssal Ruins. That's the heart of the update. There's a rumor that the ruins contain something called the Catalyst Core, a program rewriting the game's AI. If it's activated."

She trailed off, her face dark.

Draven raised an eyebrow. "Let me guess. It's game over for everyone?

"Worse." Eris locked eyes with Ryu. "The Shadow Reapers are already after it. And if they get their hands on the Core, they won't just control the game—they'll control us."

The group fell silent as the weight of her words sank in.

Ryu finally spoke, his voice steady. "Then we can't let that happen."

Eris smiled very faintly. "I thought you'd say that. That's why I'm here. The Silver Phoenix Guild will help, but we can't do it alone. You've proven yourselves. If anybody can stop this, it's you."

Aris tilted her head, and her daggers caught on the dim light. "And what's in it for you?

Eris's smirk faltered. "Survival. This has nothing to do with guild rivalry anymore. If the Core ends up in the wrong hands, none of us are going to be safe."

Ryu nodded. His determination had solidified. "Then we'll start with the Abyssal Ruins. If the Core is there, we need to get it before them."

Draven let out a long sigh and cracked his knuckles. "Guess I'd better sharpen my shield. Sounds like we're diving headfirst into trouble again.

Wouldn't be us if we didn't," Aris said with a smirk.

Eris handed Ryu a map fragment. "This will get you started. But be careful. The Abyssal Ruins aren't just dangerous-they're alive. And they don't want us there."

With that, she vanished into the crowd, leaving Team Eclipse to plan their next move.

Ryu studied the fragment, his grip tightening. "We've faced impossible odds before. This time won't be any different.

"Let's hope you're right," Aris muttered, her gaze lingering on the dark horizon.

As the team prepared to embark on their next adventure, the shadows seemed to deepen around them, hinting at the dangers yet to come.
