September 27, 2014.
Fourth court hearing convened.
On the way here, I noticed a large crowd of reporters outside the courthouse, and one reporter
recognized me and tried to stop me.
"Look at that! It's Mike Hammer's lawyer! We're talking to him right now! "
And with that, a swarm of reporters with microphones ran towards me.
I was so shy that I ran into the courthouse.
Now that I think of it, I should have given a good interview at that time, and I would not have been just a small lawyer now. From another point of view, so many media are now focusing on this case, which is enough to show how bizarre this case is.
Almost everyone wants to know the final outcome of this case.
When I entered the courtroom, the trial had already begun, and I took a seat in the far corner.
Only then did I notice that there were two men in the dock.
One is Mike Hammer and the other is Luke.
This means that after an extensive search, the victim Mike Hammer claims has been found.
Mike Hammer and Sam's testimony successfully brought Luke to trial.
I noticed that Luke seemed to have lost all hope. The way he looked at Mike Hammer changed.
It was hard to describe. It was like...
In the myth of Cthulhu, the common man's fear at the sight of the indescribable.
What is it about Mike Hammer that he doesn't understand, that he's afraid of?
It's time for the prosecutor to read the indictment, and all eyes are on the prosecutor.
The prosecutor has just risen and is about to read the indictment.
Mike Hammer did something that surprised everyone.
He suddenly opened his mouth and said to the judge.
"I will recant my confession. I did not kill anyone. "
The judge and jury in the case were astonished.
Because Mike Hammer's testimony has changed three times, the first two times only introduced
new evidence, but this time, Mike Hammer changed his testimony in court.
Mike Hammer says he didn't kill anyone.
As his former lawyer, even I was confused by him, but looking back on my previous doubts, I
seem relieved.
This isn't the first time he's recanted his confession.
"The judge asked Mike Hammer.
"Do you have proof? "
At the word evidence, Mike Hammer let out a self-deprecating grin and muttered something.
I was sitting right where I could see the shape of his mouth.
I read them out, and they were these six words.
"Evidence, evidence again. "
I don't understand the meaning of those six words yet, but soon enough, he made me understand.
Mike Hammer spoke to the judge.
"I have Sam's cloud drive account number and password, please log in to the cloud drive now, it
contains proof that I did not kill anyone. "
The court quickly logged into the account and sent the video evidence to the judge and the
prosecutor to review.
I didn't know what the video was about, but after watching the video, the old judge took off his
glasses, covered his eyes and turned his head sadly.
As an old judge like him, what picture can make him react like this?
Looking at the prosecutor beside him, he watched the video with a solemn expression, and there
was a rare incomprehension on his decent face.
They looked at each other after watching the video evidence.
Finally, the old judge announced."The court is adjourned for twenty minutes while we talk to the prosecutor about this evidence. "
Everyone in the gallery, including me, had a confused look on their face.
What evidence would make the old judge look at it and react that way? And adjourning to discuss
the evidence with the prosecutor?
I automatically looked in Mike Hammer's direction, and Mike Hammer was looking back at me.
He had this "It's over" look on his face that made me even more anxious.
It had been almost two months since I had accepted the case, and two months had passed, and
the twenty minutes I had now felt so long.
Twenty minutes later, the court reopens.
The old judge waited for the crowd to return to the courtroom. They all took their seats and
looked at Mike Hammer.
"Defendant, do you have any additional evidence? "
Mike Hammer looked at the old judge and shook his head.
"No more. "
The old judge put on his reading glasses to see Mike Hammer's face and asked:
"The court wants to know why you did what you did. "
That's exactly what I wanted to ask, and I was staring at Mike Hammer.
He looked at the judge sincerely, bowed deeply to the judge, and said:
"Please allow me to tell the court a story. "
The old judge nodded.
"Permission. "
