Chapter 1 - The Forgotten Tome

Chapter 1: The Forgotten Tome

Kalec Orwyn had always believed that true power lay not in strength, but in knowledge. His fingers moved deftly through the pages of ancient texts, the flickering candlelight casting long shadows over the crumbling parchment. In the grand library of Aeloria, the capital of the Kingdom of Vardan, he was nothing more than another scholar—just another face in the sea of those seeking answers to questions long forgotten.

But tonight felt different. The air was thick with something heavy, something unspoken.

He glanced around the vast hall, its towering bookshelves rising into darkness. Most of the other scholars had retired for the night, and the once-lively whispers of intellectual debates had been replaced by the gentle rustling of pages and the occasional creak of the wooden floor.

Kalec leaned back in his chair, massaging his temples. The manuscript in front of him was an enigma. It had arrived at the library earlier that day—no one knew who had delivered it. The cover was simple, worn leather with no title or markings. Inside, the script was strange, written in an ancient language even he had trouble deciphering. He had spent hours attempting to make sense of the symbols, with little success.

As he stared at the tome, something in the corner of his eye caught his attention—a flicker. He turned, squinting into the dim corners of the library, but nothing was there. Just shadows.

He shook his head, returning to the tome. "Perhaps I'm pushing myself too hard," he muttered. But as soon as his gaze fell upon the book once more, the symbols seemed to shift, almost imperceptibly, like the movement of stars in the night sky.

His heart skipped a beat. He blinked, leaning closer. Was it possible? Had the script... changed?

Driven by a sudden surge of curiosity, Kalec reached for his quill and parchment. He had been studying ancient languages for years, but none had prepared him for this. He began sketching the symbols, comparing them to his notes. His hand moved faster, the rhythm of his breath quickening as he deciphered the first few words.

"In the stillness beyond time, the Archive awaits."

A chill ran down his spine. The Archive. He had heard stories—legends passed down among scholars and historians. An ancient library, hidden somewhere beyond the reach of mortal realms, containing knowledge of all things. Some claimed it was a myth, while others whispered it was a place of forbidden power. The Eternal Archive.

Kalec's pulse quickened. Could it be? Was this tome connected to that legendary place?

Without thinking, he continued translating the text. The words flowed now, more easily than before, as if the book itself were guiding him.

"Only those who seek, without fear or hesitation, may enter the gates. But beware the price of knowledge, for every truth demands a sacrifice."

Suddenly, the room seemed to darken, the flickering candle barely holding back the shadows. The air grew colder, and the silence became deafening. Kalec's hands froze over the page as a strange sensation washed over him. It was as if something—no, someone—was watching him.

He looked up.

At the far end of the library, a figure stood cloaked in darkness. Tall, impossibly still. Kalec couldn't make out any features, but the presence was overwhelming. He felt the weight of its gaze on him, heavy like the mantle of the night.

"Who's there?" Kalec's voice was barely more than a whisper, his throat suddenly dry.

The figure didn't move, but he heard a voice, low and resonant, in the back of his mind.

"You have opened the first gate, Scholar. The Archive has taken notice."

Kalec's breath caught in his chest. He stood slowly, unsure whether to run or to confront this being. The figure took a step forward, its form still shrouded in shadow.

"W-what do you mean?" Kalec stammered, backing away from the table. His mind raced. The Archive—had he truly unlocked something? But how? It was just a translation, a few words from an old book.

The figure stepped closer, and the room seemed to pulse with an unseen energy. The shadows at its feet writhed and twisted, and Kalec could feel the weight of something immense pressing down on him.

"The tome you hold is more than words, Scholar. It is a key. The first key." The voice echoed in his mind, filling every corner of his consciousness. "But know this: the path you have chosen is one of no return. The knowledge you seek comes at a price."

Kalec's heart pounded. He felt a strange pull toward the figure, a magnetic force that urged him forward, despite the fear gnawing at the edges of his mind. But there was something else—an undeniable curiosity. The Archive. The forbidden knowledge. It was everything he had ever dreamed of.

"What... what kind of price?" Kalec asked, his voice trembling.

The figure did not answer directly. Instead, it raised a hand, and the shadows seemed to part slightly, revealing something glinting in the darkness. A small, delicate object—a mark, glowing faintly on the back of the figure's hand.

Kalec squinted. It was a symbol. No, a Mark. He recognized it instantly from the legends: the sign of an Archivist.

The figure's voice echoed again, cold and distant. "One does not enter the Archive unscathed. To seek its power is to embrace sacrifice. But fear not, Scholar. For you, the Archive is open."

With those final words, the figure vanished, melting into the shadows as if it had never been there. Kalec was left standing alone in the vast library, his chest heaving, his hands trembling.

The candle flickered once, then extinguished itself, plunging the room into darkness.

And in that moment, Kalec knew his life had changed forever.
