Chapter 1 - Prologue: The Pact

The cavern was a cathedral of shadows, its jagged walls illuminated by flickering flames from black candles. The air was thick with the acrid scent of burnt offerings, and the rhythmic chants of an ancient incantation reverberated through the space. At the center of the chamber, surrounded by a circle of intricate symbols carved into the stone floor, stood an elderly woman cloaked in black. Her name was Edriane, a name whispered with both fear and reverence in the isolated village that lay beyond the cursed woods.

Edriane's hands trembled, not from fear, but from the power coursing through her as she completed the final lines of the incantation. Before her, the air shimmered unnaturally, bending and warping as though reality itself recoiled. Slowly, the shape of something monstrous emerged from the void, a towering figure draped in shadow, with jagged horns curling from its skull and eyes that burned like molten coals. This was Atheramond, the Demon King, the Eternal Architect of Despair.

He stepped forward, his massive clawed hands resting at his sides, and the ground trembled beneath his weight.

"Edriane," he rumbled, his voice deep and resonant, echoing in the cavern as though it came from the depths of hell itself. "You have summoned me. Speak, mortal. What do you seek?"

Edriane bowed her head, her silver hair falling like a curtain over her face.

"I seek power, my lord. Power to protect my bloodline, to guard my descendants from the enemies that encircle us." Her voice was steady, but there was an edge of desperation beneath it.

Atheramond's lips curled into a grin, revealing rows of jagged teeth. "Power comes with a price, Edriane. Are you prepared to pay it?"

"I am." she said firmly

The demon extended a clawed hand, and with a guttural command, the symbols on the ground flared to life, glowing with a sinister red light. The temperature in the cavern dropped, and Edriane felt her breath fog in the frigid air.

"You offer your bloodline," Atheramond said, his voice a hiss. "The daughters born to you will carry my mark, and one will rise to fulfill my will. Do you accept this binding?"

Edriane hesitated, her hands curling into fists at her sides. She thought of her daughter, then barely more than a child, and the legacy of darkness she might one day inherit. But Edriane had no choice; her enemies were closing in, and her family's survival depended on the power only Atheramond could grant.

"I accept," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Atheramond raised his other hand, and with a violent motion, a jagged wound opened on Edriane's palm. Blood spilled freely onto the glowing symbols, and the cavern filled with a thunderous roar as the pact was sealed.

The demon leaned closer, his fiery eyes boring into Edriane's. "The pact is made. My power is yours, but remember this: every boon I grant comes with a shadow. One day, the heir of your bloodline will belong to me."

Edriane nodded, her resolve hardening. "Let it be done."

The demon's laughter echoed through the cavern as he began to fade, his shadowy form dissolving into the swirling void from which he had emerged. The symbols dimmed, and the air grew still once more. Edriane stood in silence, her breathing ragged, and for the first time in decades, she felt the weight of her choice settle upon her shoulders.

She turned and left the cavern, the distant howls of wolves in the cursed woods following her as she made her way back to her village. Beneath the cold, indifferent moonlight, Edriane swore she would do whatever it took to prepare the next generation for what was to come, even if it meant hiding the truth.

And so, the pact was forged, and the shadow of Atheramond loomed over her bloodline, waiting for the day when his claim would be fulfilled.
