Chapter 1 - Prologue: The Gift and the Curse

In the heart of ancient India, the kingdom of Kunti basked in the golden hues of the setting sun. The sacred river flowed gracefully, whispering tales of old as it caressed the land with its gentle currents. Amidst this serene landscape, lived a young princess named Pritha, known to all as Kunti. She was a woman of grace and wisdom, beloved by her people and revered for her beauty.

Kunti's life, however, was marked by a secret. As a young girl, she had served the sage Durvasa with unwavering devotion, enduring his harsh temper and demanding tasks. Impressed by her diligence and piety, Durvasa bestowed upon her a boon—an incantation that would allow her to summon any god of her choosing and bear a child endowed with divine qualities. Kunti received this gift with a mix of awe and trepidation, never fully comprehending the magnitude of its power.

One day, curiosity and youthful innocence got the better of her. Kunti found herself alone in the palace gardens, her mind swirling with thoughts of the sage's blessing. Could it truly be real? Was she, a mere mortal, capable of invoking the gods themselves? With a heart full of wonder and anticipation, she decided to test the incantation.

As she recited the sacred verses, her voice trembled with a mix of fear and excitement. The air around her seemed to shimmer, and the sky above darkened momentarily. Suddenly, a radiant light pierced through the clouds, bathing the garden in a golden glow. Surya, the majestic sun god, appeared before her, his presence filling the air with warmth and divinity.

"Fear not, noble Kunti," Surya spoke, his voice as gentle as the first rays of dawn. "Your call has reached me, and as promised, you shall bear a son blessed with my strength and valor."

Kunti stood in awe, her eyes reflecting the brilliance of the sun god. She felt a surge of warmth envelop her, and in that moment, she knew her life was forever changed. Within her, the seed of a divine child began to grow, filling her with a sense of both wonder and dread. The realization of her predicament soon dawned upon her—she was an unwed princess, bearing a child of divine origin in a society bound by rigid norms and customs.

Months passed, and Kunti's belly swelled with the promise of new life. She spent her days in seclusion, away from prying eyes and whispering tongues. Her heart ached with the weight of her secret, torn between the joy of impending motherhood and the fear of societal condemnation. She found solace in the quiet moments, speaking to the unborn child within her, drawing strength from the knowledge that he was destined for greatness.

As the time of childbirth approached, Kunti's anxiety grew. She knew that she could not keep the child, for her honor and the honor of her family were at stake. In a heart-wrenching decision, she resolved to abandon the baby, praying that the gods would protect him and guide him to his destiny. The night of the child's birth was both beautiful and tragic. Under the watchful gaze of the moon and stars, Kunti gave birth to a radiant baby boy. His tiny body glowed with an unearthly light, and he bore natural armor and earrings, marking him as the son of Surya.

With tears streaming down her face, Kunti placed the infant in a woven basket, adorning it with soft cloth and her silent prayers. She carried the basket to the river's edge, her heart breaking with each step. As she set the basket upon the gentle currents, she whispered a final goodbye, her voice choked with emotion. The river, as if sensing her sorrow, cradled the basket tenderly, guiding it towards an uncertain future.
