Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Chen Wei stood at the door, his heart pounding with anticipation as he watched the couriers unload bags filled with his extravagant food order. The aroma wafting through the air was intoxicating, a stark contrast to the desolation of the apocalyptic world he had glimpsed just hours before.

"Yeah, that's me! Bring it all in!" Chen exclaimed, excitement bubbling within him. He hurriedly helped the couriers carry the bags into his modest apartment, a space that suddenly felt too small for the bounty he had ordered.

As they piled the bags onto his kitchen table, Chen's eyes widened at the sight. Roast chicken, burgers, garlic spareribs, and an array of other dishes filled every available surface. It was a feast fit for a king.

"Thank you! You guys are lifesavers!" Chen said, tipping each courier generously. Once they left, he wasted no time in diving into the first bag. He pulled out a roast chicken and tore into it with fervor. Each bite was a reminder of what he had been missing—real food, not the meager rations he had survived on in his parallel world.

After devouring half of the chicken, Chen paused to catch his breath. "I need to be strategic about this," he thought. "This food will be essential for my survival when I return to that world."

With renewed determination, he began to methodically pack the remaining food into containers. He envisioned each meal as a lifeline, a way to sustain himself while navigating the dangers of zombies and scarcity.

As he worked, Chen's mind raced with possibilities. "If I can bring food back with me, what else can I take? Weapons? Supplies? I must prepare for anything!" He knew that in order to survive in that harsh reality, he needed more than just food; he needed tools and weapons to defend himself against whatever threats awaited him.

Once everything was neatly packed away, Chen focused on his mental space again. He felt a rush of energy as he willed the containers into his gray box. One by one, they vanished from sight until only a few remained on the table.

"Now for something more useful," he murmured, glancing around his apartment. His gaze landed on an old baseball bat leaning against the wall. "This could work as a weapon."

He reached out mentally and concentrated on the bat. After several tense moments of concentration and frustration—where nothing happened—he finally felt it shift. With a satisfying thud, it disappeared from view.

"Got it!" Chen cheered, feeling a surge of confidence. "I can do this!"

His next target was supplies that could help him fend off zombies: tools for self-defense and maybe some makeshift armor. He recalled seeing some sturdy items in a nearby hardware store before everything changed.

Without wasting another moment, Chen grabbed his phone again and searched for nearby stores still operating amidst the chaos. To his relief, one hardware store was still open for business.

"Time to gear up," he muttered as he quickly dressed and headed out.

The streets were eerily quiet as Chen made his way to the store. The remnants of civilization lay scattered around him—abandoned cars, broken glass, and graffiti-covered walls told stories of panic and despair. Each step felt heavy with uncertainty; every shadow seemed to harbor danger.

Upon arriving at the hardware store, Chen pushed open the door cautiously. The bell above jingled softly, but no one greeted him. The aisles were dimly lit; shelves were partially stocked but mostly empty.

"Let's see what I can find," he whispered to himself as he navigated through aisles filled with tools and supplies.

He quickly gathered several items: a sturdy crowbar for close combat, duct tape for makeshift repairs or traps, and some heavy-duty gloves to protect his hands during any encounters with zombies. He also grabbed a flashlight; darkness could be an enemy just as dangerous as any undead creature lurking in shadows.

As he approached the checkout counter with his items in hand, an unsettling noise echoed from behind him—a low growl that sent chills down his spine.

"Stay calm," Chen thought frantically as he turned slowly to face whatever lurked in the shadows.

Emerging from an aisle was a zombie—a grotesque figure with tattered clothes and sunken eyes that glinted with hunger. It stumbled forward clumsily but purposefully towards him.

Chen's heart raced as adrenaline surged through him. "I can't let fear control me!" He gripped the crowbar tightly and prepared himself for what was about to happen.

With swift movements fueled by determination and fearlessness, Chen swung the crowbar at the approaching zombie's head just as it lunged at him. The impact echoed loudly in the quiet store as its body crumpled to the floor.

Breathing heavily from both exertion and shock, Chen took a moment to gather himself before looking around cautiously. "That was just one; there could be more."

He quickly stuffed his items into his backpack and made sure to keep an eye out for any other threats as he exited the store.

Once outside, Chen felt exhilarated yet terrified by what had just happened. "This is my new reality," he realized as he began making plans for future excursions into this chaotic world.

"I need to find more supplies—and fast." With newfound resolve coursing through him, Chen set off down the street once more, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead while keeping his precious treasures safe in his mental space.

As he walked through deserted streets lined with remnants of everyday life—abandoned bicycles propped against walls and empty storefronts—Chen couldn't shake off a sense of urgency. Every moment counted; every decision could mean life or death in this unforgiving environment.

Suddenly, something caught his eye—a small grocery store with its door slightly ajar. "Maybe they have something useful inside," Chen thought as he approached cautiously.

Pushing open the door slowly revealed an interior shrouded in darkness but filled with potential supplies waiting to be discovered. The faint scent of rotting produce lingered in the air—a grim reminder of what had transpired here—but there were still shelves stocked with canned goods and dry foods that could be salvaged.

Chen moved quickly through aisles lined with cans of soup, beans, rice packets, and bottled water—all essentials for survival in both worlds. He filled his backpack until it was nearly bursting at the seams before pausing to take stock of what else might be useful.

A flash of movement caught his attention near the back of the store—a flicker of light reflecting off something metallic drew him closer. As he approached cautiously, he discovered an old but functioning electric lantern sitting atop a shelf covered in dust.

"Perfect!" Chen exclaimed quietly as he grabbed it along with extra batteries nearby—light would be invaluable during nighttime excursions or when exploring dark places where zombies might lurk unseen.

With everything packed securely away once again—his backpack now heavy but manageable—Chen felt more prepared than ever before for whatever lay ahead on this treacherous path toward survival in both realities.
