As night befell the house again and the witching hour crawled near, I stood before my sister's bed again. I lean down and whisper into her ear.
"How could you."
This drew her awake in a hurry as she scanned the room, and I sat in the rocking chair in the corner of her room. I began to make it rock. She looked over, frozen in fright at the movement of the chair. She built up all her courage and made a run for the hallway as I slammed the door shut before she could get out, making her scream at the top of her lungs, waking the whole house.
Mother and Samantha pound on the door. I begin to breathe on her mirror, and she looks over and sees it beginning to fog up.
"Hello, big sister."
She started to pound on the door and scream for help as I began to walk closer to her and grab her hair. This time, it only drained a quarter of my energy as I dug my nails into her back, making me fall to my knees as the door finally opened, and I couldn't hold it shut anymore. But I didn't pass out for another couple of days. And I will have my first.
I sit on the floor, catching my breath as I hear my sister subbing into my mother's chest. Samantha looks at her back and tells our mom that Jasmine has four scratch marks down her back. This finally makes my being possible, and they plan to talk to a priest tomorrow. I pick myself up and start to walk out of the house as I need more power.
I won't hang out in the house for a couple of days as I don't know how I would fair against a man of the cloth, and I don't need to find out anytime soon, at least until. I can kill someone in the living world. So, keeping an eye on the place from the outside and only going back when he is gone should be ok.
I head to the last street near me. After this, I will need to branch out and find another feeding ground. I will go to the trailer park on the outskirts of town. I don't want to draw too much attention to myself for now; it will not be until I know I can hunt down all of the spirits.
At that moment, the lady popped into my mind—well, most of my spirits. I walk past a playground and see some children playing. I walk toward them, and they run toward me, wanting me to play with them. I tell them why we should play hide-and-seek. I will count first, and you all will go hide. Does that sound good?
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10! READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!"
I see one kid hiding underneath a bush, and I act like I don't see her as I walk by her and head off, only to backtrack another way as I pull her by the leg out of the bush and cover her mouth as she slowly fades away.
I begin to walk further away and see a boy hiding under a porch as I pass. He covers his mouth and giggles, only to have my hands reach out behind him, covering his as he struggles for only a moment.
One by one, I absorbed the kids only when a little girl was left, but she was different as she had seen me grab the child before her and run. But she picked the wrong way and headed into a street I had already eaten. She was trapped and crying.
"Why are you doing this, mister? I am a good girl; I did nothing bad to you. Let me go; mommy is waiting for me."
Every step I took, closing the distance, was like cutting my flesh. As I finally reached the little girl and placed my hand on her head, she started to fade while crying, and another part of me died as I turned around and walked to the street I was heading to.
I noticed a woman walking towards me and the park as she had a gunshot wound to her head, just like the little girl. She stopped before me and asked me.
"Have you seen a little girl with twin pigtails and a blue and white dress?"
Her words were worse than any insult I had ever heard. I walked over and introduced myself, holding out my hand so I could send her to her daughter. I thought that would be the best course of action to take right now, as the past can't be changed, and I can only taint myself even more.
She smiled and took hold of my hand as I pulled her close and covered her mouth before speaking.
"I am sending you to wherever your daughter may be; I am sorry, but I must do this. I am already dead, so being a monster isn't different."
But I only say that to hide the hate I am starting to place on myself. As she looks wide-eyed with tears forming in her eyes, she can do nothing but nod as her form slowly vanishes from the land of the dead.
I grit my teeth and finally step onto the street, as I begin clearing home to home until I finish my task for the night. I don't go back home as I feel like walking in the woods to clear my head of all that has started to build up after these last few days and the people I remember absorbing into me.
I leave the city and walk through the eerie forest until I find a clearing with a pound in it. As I walk to the water's edge, a huggered chuckle begins to echo in the surrounding area.
"You're a different kind... What are you, boy?"
I look around, trying to find out where that voice is coming from, as this person snickers.
"I am not on the land, boy."
I look towards the pound and walk onto the dock that goes out about fifteen feet. I look down and see something wrapped in cloth with weights tied to its feet. I can see its figure—it's a woman.
"I ask again, boy. What are you?"
"I don't know myself. But what are you, and why are you down there?"
"I was tried as a witch and drowned, not that I was innocent. I killed many people to offer to Satan and his friends."
It broke out in laughter as it stopped and thought for a moment.
"I know what you are. Interesting, things are going to get interesting."
"What am I!"
"Boy, you will have to come to terms with that yourself. Everyone has a fate, and they can't escape a destiny that is not changeable."
Her figure disappears from beneath the water, leaving me wondering what I am supposed to do. I sit on a rock and close my eyes as I slowly hear the beating of hooves and screams that wake me from my slumber.
