Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Turn of Fate's Gear

The air thrummed with a nervous energy that clung to Amelia like a second skin. The sleek, modern lobby of Sky City Tower, headquarters of the renowned Tiancheng Group, seemed to amplify her every heartbeat, every shaky breath. She clutched her portfolio tighter, the edges digging into her palms, a small price to pay for a semblance of control in this sea of polished marble and hushed whispers.

Today was the day. The day she, Amelia, a small-town girl with big dreams and an even bigger portfolio, could potentially land her dream job as a designer at Tiancheng, the nation's leading tech giant. It was a long shot, she knew, competing against seasoned professionals, but the mere possibility sent a thrill through her, a potent cocktail of fear and exhilaration.

She'd spent weeks perfecting her portfolio, sleepless nights blurring into caffeine-fueled days as she poured her heart and soul into each design. It represented not just her skills, but her aspirations, her burning desire to prove herself in this cutthroat world. And now, standing on the precipice of her future, she couldn't help but feel a surge of hope, a flicker of defiance against the odds stacked against her.

Taking a deep breath, she joined the queue of hopefuls, their faces a mix of anxiety and determination, each a testament to the allure and prestige of Tiancheng. The woman ahead of her, impeccably dressed in a power suit, tapped away on her phone, her brow furrowed in concentration. Behind her, a young man nervously adjusted his tie, his Adam's apple bobbing with each swallow.

Time seemed to stretch and warp, minutes crawling by like hours as Amelia waited her turn. Finally, the interview room door swung open, and a woman emerged, her face carefully neutral. "Amelia?" she called out, her voice crisp and professional.

Heart pounding, Amelia stepped forward, her throat suddenly dry. "That's me," she managed, her voice a notch higher than usual.

The woman, her name tag reading 'Ms. Zhang', gave a curt nod and ushered her into the room. The air inside felt heavy, thick with anticipation and the faint scent of expensive cologne. Three figures sat behind a gleaming mahogany table, their expressions unreadable.

Amelia's gaze swept over them, taking in their tailored suits, their air of quiet authority. There was Ms. Zhang, her face now etched with a professional coolness, her pen poised over a notepad. Beside her sat a man with a kind face and a shock of white hair, his eyes twinkling with a hint of amusement. And then, her gaze landed on the man in the center.

He sat back in his chair, an aura of effortless power radiating from him. His suit, a dark charcoal that seemed to absorb the light, hung perfectly on his tall, broad-shouldered frame. His features were sharp and striking, all high cheekbones and a strong jawline, framed by hair as dark as night. But it was his eyes that held her captive. They were the color of dark chocolate, intense and piercing, seeming to see right through her, reading her every thought, her every hope and fear.

This was Ethan Carter, the enigmatic CEO of Tiancheng, a man whispered about in hushed tones, a legend in the business world. His reputation preceded him: ruthless, brilliant, and utterly untouchable. Amelia had devoured every article, every interview she could find, fascinated by his meteoric rise to power, his unwavering focus, and his air of impenetrable mystery. And now, here he was, in the flesh, his presence filling the room, making it hard to breathe, let alone form a coherent sentence.

"Good morning, Ms. Amelia," Ms. Zhang's voice cut through her thoughts, bringing her back to the present. "Please have a seat."

Amelia stumbled slightly, her foot catching on the leg of the chair. A wave of heat crept up her neck as she mumbled an apology, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. As she took her seat, her gaze collided with Ethan's, and for a fleeting moment, she felt a strange jolt, a sense of connection that sent shivers down her spine. He held her gaze for a beat too long, his expression unreadable, before finally turning to Ms. Zhang, a subtle shift in his demeanor that didn't escape Amelia's notice.

The interview commenced, a blur of questions and answers, Amelia's carefully rehearsed responses now feeling woefully inadequate under the weight of their scrutiny. Ms. Zhang's questions were sharp, probing her knowledge and experience, while the kind-faced man, Mr. Li, as she later learned, focused on her design philosophy, his gentle demeanor doing little to ease her nerves.

Throughout it all, Ethan remained silent, his gaze fixed on her, his expression unreadable. Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that he was seeing right through her façade, stripping away her carefully constructed confidence, exposing her raw ambition and vulnerability. It was unnerving, exhilarating, and utterly intoxicating.

The interview drew to a close, and Amelia rose from her seat, her legs feeling shaky, her heart a drumbeat against her ribs. She'd given it her all, poured her heart out, but as she met the gazes of the three interviewers, she couldn't help but feel a wave of disappointment wash over her. Ms. Zhang's face was carefully neutral, Mr. Li's smile seemed strained, and Ethan... Ethan remained an enigma, his expression giving nothing away.

As she turned to leave, her heart sinking with each step, a voice stopped her. "Ms. Amelia."

It was Ethan. His voice, deep and resonant, sent a tremor through her. She turned back, her pulse quickening, her mind racing with possibilities.

He rose from his seat, his movements fluid and graceful, his gaze never leaving hers. "Walk with me," he said, his voice low, almost intimate.

Amelia's mind screamed at her to refuse, to politely decline, but her feet moved before she could stop them, drawn to him like a moth to a flame. He led her out of the interview room, leaving a stunned Ms. Zhang and a bewildered Mr. Li in their wake.

As they walked down the hallway, his hand brushed against hers, sending a jolt of electricity through her. He didn't seem to notice, or if he did, he didn't acknowledge it. They reached the end of the hallway, and he stopped, turning to face her, his expression unreadable.

"I'll be in touch, Ms. Amelia," he said, his voice low and husky, sending shivers down her spine. And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Amelia standing there, her heart pounding, her mind reeling, the gears of fate already set in motion.
