Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Mink Madness

The Moonlit Hollow was quieter than usual, but the peace wasn't reassuring. Aria sat perched on a rock near the stream, her sharp blue eyes scanning the snow-covered terrain. Her fur bristled with unease, her instincts prickling.

"Something's off," she muttered under her breath.

The Frost Mink was sitting beside her, nibbling on a frozen sprig it had scavenged from the stream's edge. Its tiny blue-furred companions were scattered throughout the hollow, their squeaks filling the air as they scurried about.

Aria let out a low growl, her tail flicking. "You'd think after nearly getting eaten by a Frostscale Lizard, you'd all learn to keep a low profile."

The Frost Mink glanced up at her, squeaking innocently.

"Don't give me that look," Aria muttered. "This is your fault. You brought them here."

The mink nuzzled against her leg, and she sighed, her irritation softening.

"Alright, fine," she muttered. "But if anything else comes after you, you're handling it yourself."

---

Aria's patrol of the hollow was uneventful, but the feeling of unease didn't leave her. Every shadow seemed deeper, every sound sharper.

"System," she muttered. "What are the odds something's about to attack?"

"Threat level: Low. No immediate hostiles detected."

Aria narrowed her eyes. "Low threat level? That's what you said before the wolves, the lynx, the panther, and the giant lizard. Forgive me if I'm not reassured."

The Frost Mink scurried beside her, occasionally darting ahead to investigate patches of snow or burrows. The other minks followed at a distance, their tiny paws leaving faint trails in the fresh snow.

As they reached the edge of the hollow, Aria crouched low, her sharp blue eyes narrowing as she scanned the horizon.

The Wildlands were deceptively quiet, the snow-covered expanse stretching out before her in an unbroken blanket of white.

"Too quiet," she thought, her claws flexing. "Something's out there. I can feel it."

---

The silence was broken by a faint sound, a soft rustling that sent a jolt of tension through her body.

Her ears swiveled, pinpointing the source—a cluster of rocks near the hollow's edge.

Aria crouched lower, activating Lunar Veil as her shimmering form blended into the shadows.

The Frost Mink let out a soft squeak, its tiny body trembling as it darted behind her.

"Stay put," she hissed, her sharp blue eyes locked on the rocks.

The rustling grew louder, and a figure emerged—a sleek, dark-furred creature with piercing red eyes.

"Hostile detected: Nightshade Lynx (Beast Awakening Stage, Advanced Phase). Threat level: High."

Aria's fur bristled. "An advanced phase lynx? Fantastic. Just what I needed."

---

The lynx's glowing eyes scanned the hollow, its sharp claws clicking against the frozen ground as it prowled closer.

Aria's instincts screamed at her to stay hidden, but the cluster of minks behind her had other ideas.

One of the smaller minks let out a loud squeak, and the lynx's head snapped toward the sound.

"Of course," Aria muttered, her claws scraping against the ground. "Because why would you ever keep quiet?"

The lynx crouched, its muscles coiling as it prepared to strike.

Aria moved first, darting out of the shadows and slamming into the lynx's side.

The creature snarled, its red eyes blazing as it turned to face her.

"Alright," she growled, her claws flexing. "Let's see what you've got."

---

The fight was fierce and chaotic.

The Nightshade Lynx was fast, its movements sleek and deliberate as it lunged at her with sharp claws and snapping jaws.

But Aria was faster. She activated Spirit Step, phasing through the lynx's attack and reappearing behind it to strike its exposed flank.

"Spirit Step: 50% Progress."

The lynx snarled, spinning to face her with a frustrated growl.

Aria activated Lunar Veil, her shimmering form disappearing into the shadows as she darted around the lynx.

"Lunar Veil: 65% Progress."

Her strikes were quick and precise, each one wearing the lynx down as it struggled to keep up.

The lynx's movements grew sluggish, its snarls turning to desperate yowls as it fought to defend itself.

Finally, with a well-timed lunge, Aria brought the lynx down.

"Quest Complete: Defend Territory. +40 EXP earned. Minor Attribute Boost applied."

---

Aria collapsed onto the snow, her chest heaving as the adrenaline coursing through her began to fade.

The Frost Mink scurried over to her, squeaking softly as it nuzzled against her leg.

"Don't act like you weren't part of the problem," she muttered, glaring down at the tiny creature. "If you'd stayed quiet, this wouldn't have happened."

The mink squeaked again, looking up at her with wide, innocent eyes.

"Unbelievable," Aria muttered, her tail flicking. "You're lucky I have a soft spot for fluff balls."

---

As the other minks gathered around her, their tiny bodies clustering together for warmth, Aria let out a low growl.

"This hollow is turning into a madhouse," she muttered, curling up beneath the rocks. "At this rate, I'll have to start charging admission."

The Frost Mink squeaked softly, curling up beside her with a contented sigh.

Aria sighed, her sharp blue eyes softening. "Fine. You can stay. But no more lynxes, got it?"

The mink squeaked, and Aria let out a faint chuckle.

"Yeah, we'll see how long that lasts," she muttered, closing her eyes.

As the snow began to fall again, the Moonlit Hollow fell into a tenuous peace.

For now.
