Chapter 10 - The Blood Within

Luke's body tensed as he sat on the edge of the hard cot, his mind spinning with questions and fears he couldn't untangle. The faint, rhythmic sound of distant footsteps echoed through the sterile, dimly lit corridors beyond his door. He pressed his hands against his temples, trying to stave off the panic that threatened to engulf him.

Every moment since he had woken up felt surreal, a waking nightmare laced with fragments of a life he didn't recognize. The hooded figure's words haunted him: You carry the blood of the ancient clans.

He clenched his fists, trying to shake the memory away. Was he really a freak? Something other than human? His head swam with images from his childhood—innocent moments that now felt tainted. Had his father known? His mother? Did they keep secrets from him, hiding something that defined his very existence?

A sharp knock at the door shattered his thoughts.

Luke's heart leapt as the door swung open, revealing the tall woman in black who had introduced herself as Commander Alira. Her gaze was piercing, her demeanor cold but authoritative.

"It's time," she said, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Luke's throat tightened, but he nodded. He followed her out into the hallway, his bare feet brushing against the cold metal floor.

---

Alira's POV

She watched the boy closely as he trailed behind her, his movements stiff with unease. In her years as Commander of Initiates, she had seen countless recruits enter these halls—some brimming with confidence, others trembling with fear. But Luke… he was different.

The first test had revealed nothing. No abilities. No sign of supernatural traits. To the world, he appeared ordinary. Yet Alira knew better. The hooded figure had never been wrong before. If Luke truly carried the blood of both clans—vampire and werewolf—it would explain the anomalies in his readings. Such hybrids were rare, their abilities often dormant until awakened through extraordinary circumstances.

Her jaw tightened as she thought about the implications. If Luke's potential could be harnessed, he would be a weapon unlike any other. But if he proved unstable…

She shook off the thought as they reached the chamber doors.

---

The Mirror Chamber

The doors loomed before them, carved with ancient symbols that seemed to hum with latent energy. Alira placed a gloved hand on the glowing red gem at the center, and the doors groaned open, revealing the chamber's vast expanse.

Luke hesitated at the threshold, his eyes wide as he took in the sight before him. The mirrors lining the walls reflected warped, shifting images that made his stomach churn. At the center of the room stood the basin, its dark liquid swirling with an unnatural light.

"What is this place?" he whispered, his voice barely audible.

Alira stepped forward, her boots clicking against the stone floor. "This is the Mirror Chamber. It will show you who you truly are."

Luke swallowed hard, his pulse quickening. "What if I don't want to know?"

Alira's gaze softened, just for a moment. "The truth doesn't wait for your permission, Luke. It simply is."

---

Luke's POV

The liquid in the basin shimmered, drawing Luke closer despite his fear. His reflection appeared fragmented, distorted by ripples that seemed to radiate from his very presence.

"Look," Alira urged, her voice firm but not unkind.

Luke leaned over the basin, his breath catching as the liquid stilled. Images began to form—at first faint, then vivid. He saw himself running through dense forests, the wind howling in his ears. His muscles burned with an energy that felt primal, electric.

The scene shifted. He was standing atop a cliff under a blood-red moon, his silhouette sharp and commanding. His eyes glowed silver, and veins of dark energy pulsed beneath his skin.

"Stop," Luke gasped, pulling back from the basin. His chest heaved as he tried to process what he had seen. "That's not me. That's not possible."

Alira placed a hand on his shoulder, grounding him. "It is you, Luke. You just don't understand it yet."

---

Later that night, Luke sat alone in the dormitory he shared with several other recruits. The room was stark and impersonal, the only sound the faint hum of the ventilation system.

The other recruits had made it clear he wasn't welcome. They whispered behind his back, their eyes filled with disdain. The fact that his abilities hadn't registered during the initial testing marked him as an outsider, a failure.

He stared at the small bracelet on his wrist—the device meant to measure and analyze each recruit's supernatural abilities. For most, it displayed a glowing emblem representing their power. For Luke, it was blank.

---

Kara's POV

In another part of the facility, Kara paced her room, her mind racing. Her own test results had been impressive—control over water and ice, a rare and coveted combination. Yet she couldn't shake the memory of the boy she had seen earlier in the halls.

There had been something in his eyes, something she couldn't name. A mix of fear and determination that set him apart from the others.

"Who are you, Luke?" she murmured to herself.

---

Over the next several days, tension in the facility grew. Luke's presence stirred unrest among the recruits, especially the elite students who prided themselves on their abilities. Whispers of his supposed failure spread like wildfire, and confrontations became inevitable.

During a training session, one of the top students—a boy named Jace with the power of super strength—cornered Luke in the sparring arena.

"You don't belong here," Jace sneered, his fists clenched.

Luke squared his shoulders, refusing to back down. "I didn't ask to be here."

The confrontation escalated, drawing the attention of instructors and recruits alike. But before a fight could break out, the lights in the arena flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness.

A low growl echoed through the air, sending chills down everyone's spine. When the lights returned, Luke stood at the center of the arena, his eyes glowing faintly with silver fire.

The room fell silent.
