Chereads / Abyss Reckoning / Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

Nitish sat on a jagged rock, the sharp pain in his ribs a constant reminder of the fight he had survived earlier. On his shoulder sat the frog-like creature that had, for reasons beyond his understanding, chosen him as its companion. He had named it Rocky, inspired by the way its tiny body was surprisingly hard and resilient, almost like stone. Rocky let out a soft croak, its bulbous yellow eyes scanning the dark, eerie forest of the Abyss. Despite the strangeness of their partnership, Nitish felt a grudging sense of camaraderie with the creature.

Nitish flexed his fingers, still aching from gripping his makeshift dagger so tightly in the last battle. The bones of the creatures they had defeated lay scattered around him, their grotesque forms twisted in death. Rocky had proven to be more than just an ally; the little creature had an uncanny intelligence and an ability to fight that surprised Nitish. Together, they had already taken down several predators of the Abyss, and Nitish felt his confidence grow with each encounter.

"Alright, Rocky," Nitish said, his voice low but steady. "If we're going to survive this hellhole, we need to work together. No more surprises, okay? Let's figure out how to fight as a team."

Rocky croaked in agreement, hopping down from Nitish's shoulder and circling him playfully. The frog's strange ability to grow in size during combat was still something Nitish was trying to understand, but he wasn't about to question it. For now, it was a tool, and Nitish needed every advantage he could get.

Their sparring began in earnest. Nitish set up simple drills, using sticks and rocks as targets. Rocky demonstrated its agility, leaping high into the air to knock down projectiles Nitish threw at it. In turn, Nitish practiced precision strikes with his dagger, using Rocky's unpredictable movements to sharpen his reflexes. They worked tirelessly, their partnership becoming more synchronized with each passing hour.

The eerie silence of the Abyss was broken only by the occasional growl of distant predators. Nitish and Rocky stayed on high alert, their senses tuned to every sound and movement. The Abyss was unforgiving, and complacency was a death sentence.

Their next challenge came unexpectedly.

As they moved deeper into the forest, the ground beneath them began to shake. Nitish froze, his hand instinctively going to his dagger. Rocky let out a low, warning croak, its body tense. The tremors grew stronger, accompanied by the sound of heavy, lumbering footsteps. Nitish crouched low, peering through the thick foliage. What he saw made his blood run cold.

A twin-headed ogre emerged from the shadows, its massive frame towering over the trees. Each of its heads was grotesque, with jagged teeth and eyes that burned with a savage intelligence. Its skin was a sickly green, mottled with scars and patches of armor-like growths. In its massive hands, it wielded a crude club made from a tree trunk, and its second head clutched a jagged boulder.

Nitish's grip on his dagger tightened. "Well, Rocky," he whispered, his voice laced with tension. "Looks like we've got our work cut out for us."

Rocky croaked softly, hopping onto Nitish's shoulder before leaping down to the ground. The frog began to grow, its small frame expanding rapidly until it was nearly the size of a large wolf. Its eyes gleamed with determination, and Nitish couldn't help but smirk.

"Alright, let's see what we can do."

The battle began with calculated strikes. Nitish darted to the side, his dagger flashing as he slashed at the ogre's leg. The blade barely pierced the thick skin, drawing only a shallow cut. The ogre roared, its two heads bellowing in unison as it swung its club in a wide arc. Nitish rolled to the ground, narrowly avoiding the devastating blow.

Rocky, now in its larger form, leapt onto the ogre's back, its sticky tongue lashing out to strike one of the heads. The ogre howled in pain, swatting at the frog, but Rocky was too quick. It bounded off the ogre's shoulder, landing a few feet away and croaking defiantly.

Nitish used the distraction to his advantage, lunging forward to deliver another strike. This time, he aimed for the ogre's ankle, his dagger sinking deeper into the flesh. The ogre staggered, its balance momentarily thrown off.

The ogre retaliated with frightening speed. Its second head hurled the jagged boulder at Nitish, forcing him to dive out of the way. The boulder smashed into the ground, sending shards of rock flying. One of the shards grazed Nitish's arm, drawing blood, but he gritted his teeth and pressed on.

"Rocky, keep it distracted!" Nitish shouted, his voice filled with urgency.

The frog obeyed, leaping back onto the ogre and targeting its second head. Its tongue lashed out again, striking the ogre's eyes and momentarily blinding it. The ogre flailed wildly, its club smashing into the ground as it tried to dislodge Rocky. Nitish took the opportunity to climb onto the ogre's leg, using its armor-like growths as footholds.

With precise movements, Nitish scaled the ogre's body, his dagger ready. He reached the base of the ogre's first head and drove the blade into its neck. The ogre roared in agony, its massive hands reaching up to swat him away. Nitish held on tightly, twisting the dagger to deepen the wound.

Rocky, sensing the opening, leapt onto the ogre's second head and began clawing at its face. The ogre's roars grew louder, its movements more erratic. Nitish knew they were wearing it down, but the fight was far from over.

The ogre bucked violently, throwing Nitish off. He hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the wind out of him. Gasping for breath, he scrambled to his feet, just in time to see the ogre swing its club at Rocky. The frog narrowly avoided the blow, leaping high into the air and landing beside Nitish.

The two regrouped, their eyes locked on the wounded but still formidable ogre. Nitish's mind raced as he formulated a plan. "We need to go for the legs," he muttered, glancing at Rocky. "If we can bring it down, we'll have a chance."

Rocky croaked in agreement, its body tense and ready.

Nitish and Rocky moved as one, their partnership seamless. Nitish darted to the left, drawing the ogre's attention, while Rocky circled to the right. The frog's tongue shot out, striking the ogre's injured ankle and causing it to stumble. Nitish seized the opportunity, slashing at the other leg with all his strength.

The ogre let out a guttural roar as its massive body began to collapse. The ground shook as it fell, its knees hitting the earth with a thunderous impact. Nitish didn't waste a moment. He climbed onto the ogre's back, his dagger aimed for the base of the first head. With a primal shout, he drove the blade deep into the ogre's neck, severing the spinal cord.

The first head went limp, but the second head let out a furious scream. Rocky leapt onto the ogre's chest, its claws tearing into the remaining head's face. Nitish climbed higher, grabbing a jagged shard of bone from the ground and plunging it into the second head's throat. The ogre thrashed violently before finally falling still.

Nitish collapsed beside the fallen beast, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. Rocky shrank back to its smaller size, hopping onto Nitish's shoulder and croaking softly. Despite the exhaustion and pain, Nitish managed a weak smile.

"Not bad, Rocky," he said, his voice hoarse. "Not bad at all."

The two sat in silence for a moment, surrounded by the aftermath of their battle. Nitish's body ached, and his wounds stung, but the victory filled him with a sense of grim satisfaction. He had survived another day in the Abyss, and he wasn't alone.

As he looked at the fallen ogre, Nitish couldn't help but think about the journey ahead. The Abyss was relentless, but so was he. With Rocky by his side, he felt a flicker of hope—small, but enough to keep him moving forward. Together, they would face whatever horrors awaited, and one day, Nitish would climb out of this hell and claim the vengeance he had sworn.
