Chereads / The Guardian's Oath / Chapter 2 - Price of power

Chapter 2 - Price of power

Kael sat atop a rocky outcrop, staring out over the remains of the village. The last of the fire's smoke drifted into the cool night air, mixing with the scent of blood and ash. The villagers, what was left of them, had gathered in a clearing, led by the village elder, an old woman with silver hair and a weathered face. Her expression was grim, yet grateful, as she surveyed the battlefield.

"Thank you for your help, Kael." Her voice cracked with age as she approached him, though her eyes remained sharp. "I don't know what we would have done without you."

Kael nodded, though the words felt hollow. He had protected the village, yes, but it didn't feel like enough. The beasts that had attacked them were relentless, too organized, and far stronger than any monsters he'd faced before. Something darker was at work, and he could feel it in the air.

He stood, wiping the blood from his sword with a cloth he pulled from his belt. "You'll need to fortify your defenses," he said, his voice low and distant. "This wasn't a random raid. There's something else going on. I think someone is controlling the monsters."

The elder's brow furrowed. "Controlling them? But why—"

"I don't know yet," Kael interrupted, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the horizon. His mind raced, the strange sense of foreboding growing stronger with each passing moment. "But if the beasts are working together like this, it means someone is orchestrating it. And if they're smart enough to do that, they're probably after something more."

The elder hesitated, her gaze shifting to the Guardians that hovered around Kael, swirling in the air like living winds. The ethereal forms of Azra and the lesser spirits were visible now, each standing guard around him like silent protectors.

"You were chosen by the Guardian System, weren't you?" the elder asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Kael's hand tightened around the hilt of his sword. "I was. But that doesn't matter right now."

"Don't be so quick to dismiss the importance of that power," she said softly. "The Guardian System isn't just a gift. It's a responsibility. One that I'm not sure you fully understand."

Kael met her gaze, his chest tightening. "I understand it well enough."

A heavy silence stretched between them, the wind whistling softly through the ruins of the village. The elder's eyes softened, but there was something in them—an unspoken warning, a weight that pressed down on Kael's heart.

"Look around you, Kael. You're fighting for these people, but in the end, the power you wield comes with a cost. Every Guardian you summon, every bit of strength they give you, comes with a price. And one day, that price will come due."

Kael shifted uneasily, but he didn't answer. He didn't need to. He knew the risks. He had always known.

"I've been chosen," he said quietly. "That means I have a duty to protect them. I can't turn my back on that, no matter the cost."

The elder nodded slowly. "You'll see the price soon enough. And when it comes, you'll have to decide what kind of man you want to be."

With a final glance at the elder, Kael turned and walked away. His mind was too full of questions, too full of the sense that something was coming—a storm that was much darker than he had prepared for.

Back at his camp, Kael settled near the fire, his eyes cast downward, his thoughts heavy. The Guardians hovered in the air around him, their ethereal forms glowing faintly in the night. Azra, ever the quiet sentinel, floated just above him, a constant, unwavering presence.

"You've been quiet," Kael said, glancing at her. "What are you thinking?"

There was a long pause before Azra's voice filled his mind. You're worried. I can feel it.

Kael didn't answer. He didn't need to. His thoughts were a tangled mess, and no amount of words would help him sort through them.

You've fought well, Azra continued. But you're still young. The weight of your responsibility will only grow heavier from here. The monsters you faced today were nothing compared to what you'll encounter soon.

"Soon?" Kael's voice was a low growl. "What do you mean? What's coming?"

You know as well as I do, Azra responded cryptically. There's a power rising, Kael. A force greater than anything we've ever faced before. And it's tied to the Guardians.

The fire crackled, the embers casting eerie shadows around Kael. He felt a chill run down his spine. "What kind of power?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

I don't know, Azra admitted. But I can feel it. Something is stirring in the depths of this world. Something ancient. And when it awakens, it will change everything.

Kael clenched his fists. "I won't let it destroy everything. I'll protect this world. No matter what it takes."

Azra's voice softened. That's what you say now. But you'll have to make a choice one day. A choice that will test everything you believe in.

Kael stood abruptly, his heart pounding in his chest. He had heard the warnings before, from others who had come before him, those who had wielded the Guardian System. He knew the stories—the tales of Guardians who had grown too powerful, too desperate, only to fall to their own power. The cost of summoning the Guardians was always high, and Kael knew that he would face the same dilemma sooner or later. But he couldn't think about that now.

He had a duty to the people of this world. And he wouldn't let anything stand in his way.

As the days passed, Kael traveled across Eryndor, leaving behind the charred remnants of the village and heading toward the next battle. His mind was always on the horizon, always searching for the signs that something bigger was coming—something that would demand all of his strength.

The wind howled around him as he marched, his Guardians at his side. And though the storm in his heart was growing, one thing remained clear:

He would fight until his last breath.

But even Kael couldn't ignore the growing sense that, one day, his fight would be against the very power he wielded. And that day would come sooner than he expected.
