Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: The New Rules

The air felt different now. It wasn't just the weight of the quiet or the sharp scent of decay that clung to the world. It was the knowledge that everything had changed, and Kade was part of that change. The System's voice was always there now, like an invisible companion, guiding him through the chaos.

But with the new responsibilities came a sense of dread. Kade didn't know what the System wanted, but it was clear that it was far more powerful than anything he'd ever encountered. It gave him power. It gave him rewards. But at what cost?

Lila stirred beside him, breaking his thoughts. She had been sleeping fitfully on the makeshift bed they'd created from old shelves and blankets, her body still weakened from her injury. Kade had spent most of the night keeping watch, his thoughts spinning in circles. The knife. The salves. The missions. Every task seemed to pull him deeper into something he didn't fully understand.

He ran a hand through his hair and glanced out of the cracked window. The world beyond was still a wasteland. The sky was heavy with dark clouds, and the occasional rumble of thunder echoed through the broken city.

[New mission: Locate and activate the nearest Survival Beacon. Mission Completion Reward: Basic healing kit.]

The voice broke through the silence, and Kade's heart skipped a beat. A beacon? He had no idea what that even meant, but the reward sounded useful. He turned back to Lila, who was slowly sitting up, her eyes still half-closed.

"I need to go," he said quietly, not wanting to alarm her.

Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked at him with a mix of confusion and concern. "Where? It's not safe out there."

"I know," Kade said, picking up the combat knife from the floor. "But the System gave me a new mission. I don't have much of a choice."

Lila pushed herself up, wincing as she put weight on her injured leg. "You can't go alone, Kade."

Kade shook his head. "It's too dangerous. You're not well enough yet."

She glared at him, determination in her eyes. "I'm coming with you."

"I can't protect both of us out there," he said, his voice firm.

"You won't have to," she replied softly, a slight smile playing at the corner of her lips. "I'm not as helpless as I look, you know."

Kade looked at her for a moment, torn between his need to protect her and the knowledge that they had to work together if they were going to survive. She was right—he wasn't alone anymore. And he couldn't keep pushing her away.

He sighed and finally nodded. "Alright. But stay close, and don't do anything stupid."

Lila grinned, the first genuine smile he had seen from her in days. "I'll hold you to that."

The streets outside the convenience store were eerily quiet as Kade and Lila stepped into the open. The air was thick with tension, and Kade's senses were on high alert. Every rustle of wind, every distant creak of a building felt like a threat.

They moved cautiously through the debris-strewn streets, stepping over broken glass and abandoned vehicles. Kade's mind was fixed on the mission, but he couldn't help but notice the way Lila's leg slowed her down. She wasn't in any condition to be out here, but there was no time to waste.

[Survival Beacon detected: 1.2 km.]

Kade's eyes narrowed at the System's prompt. A beacon. It was some kind of marker, something that could help them survive. Maybe it would offer shelter or supplies. He hoped it was worth the risk.

"Keep up," he muttered, glancing at Lila. She was struggling to move at his pace, but she didn't complain.

They walked in silence for a while, the distant sound of monsters growling echoing from somewhere deep in the city. The air felt heavier with each step.

Then, a low growl pierced the silence. Kade immediately stopped, his hand tightening around the knife.

"What was that?" Lila whispered, her voice barely audible.

Kade didn't answer. He motioned for her to stay behind him, his eyes scanning the street. The growl came again, this time louder and closer.

He turned to see a shadow moving across the rubble. The creature was large, its body hunched, and it had the same yellow eyes that the Wailers had. But this one was different—its movements were quicker, more fluid.

A Slinker. Kade had heard rumors about these things. Faster, deadlier than the Wailers. If it saw them, it would be trouble.

Kade took a step back, his heart pounding in his chest. He wasn't sure how to fight something like this, but he couldn't afford to run. Not with Lila with him.

The Slinker paused, its yellow eyes locking onto Kade. For a moment, the world felt still, as if everything was holding its breath. Then, the creature hissed and lunged.

Kade barely had time to react. He raised the knife just in time to deflect the Slinker's claws, but the force of the blow sent him staggering back.

"Run!" Kade shouted at Lila, pushing her behind a car.

The Slinker roared, its sharp claws slashing through the air. Kade ducked under another swipe, slashing the knife at its side. The creature howled in pain but didn't stop.

He needed to think fast. The knife wasn't enough. He needed a distraction, something to get the upper hand.

He spotted a rusted canister nearby and grabbed it, throwing it with all his strength. The canister exploded, sending the Slinker into a frenzy.

For a moment, the creature was disoriented. Kade didn't hesitate. He rushed forward, his knife flashing through the air.

This time, it struck true. The Slinker collapsed, its yellow eyes dimming as it fell to the ground, defeated.

Kade stood over it, panting heavily, his heart racing. He didn't have time to feel relief.

"Lila," he called out, looking over at her.

She slowly emerged from behind the car, her eyes wide but filled with awe. "That... was incredible," she whispered.

Kade wiped the sweat from his brow. "We're not done yet."

The Survival Beacon was still ahead, its signal flashing in his mind. They had no time to waste.

But as they moved forward, Kade couldn't shake the feeling that something much bigger was coming. And he had a sinking suspicion that the System's missions were only going to get harder from here.
