"Then, you haven't read my book at all, have you, Miss Lowell?"
Lockhart looked at Irina and asked.
In front of the entire class, Irina had no choice but to lie and say that her book had been stolen.
Despite the obvious lie, the narcissistic Lockhart believed it. He nodded and said, "Yes, who wouldn't like Gilderoy Lockhart's books? Maybe some small-time thief admired me too much but couldn't afford my books, so he finally set his sights on poor Miss Lowell. It seems being admired is also a flaw!"
Lockhart closed his eyes, placed his hands on his head, and ruffled his hair, pretending to feel cold from the heights of his supposed suffering.
When Lockhart opened his eyes again, he saw Irina's sad expression. He concluded that she was upset because she lost her book and thought she, too, was one of his little admirers.
Then, Lockhart looked at Irina and said, "As your Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, after careful consideration, I've decided to give you a set of my books, Miss Lowell."
Irina responded helplessly, "Thank you very much, Professor!"
As everyone knew, her sadness had nothing to do with Lockhart's book. Irina was simply extremely confused by everything happening in the classroom.
Damn Lockhart, why did you have to read every single answer out loud?
Irina was on the verge of tears, but there were no more tears left.
Lockhart waved his wand. Although his magic level might not be as high as a fifth-year wizard, he could still perform the simplest levitation spell.
A set of Lockhart's books floated from his podium and landed on Irina's desk.
After handing Irina his books, Lockhart began grading the other students' papers. In the end, Hermione was the only one in the entire class to score the highest marks, which earned Gryffindor an additional ten points.
"Now, back to business! Be careful, I'm here to teach you how to defend against the most wicked things known in the magical world! You'll face the most terrifying things in this classroom. But remember, as long as I'm here, nothing will harm you. All I ask is that you stay calm."
Lockhart bent down, pulled a large covered cage from behind the podium, and placed it on the desk.
"I must ask that you don't scream; it will only agitate them!" Lockhart said, lifting the cloth.
Inside the cage, a group of ugly Cornish pixies appeared. These pixies were iron-green in color, about eight inches tall, with small, pointed faces and shrill, harsh voices.
Lockhart seemed proud as he announced, "Yes, the Cornish pixies were just caught!"
Seeing these pixies, the students in the class couldn't help but laugh.
"Is this supposed to be the most terrifying thing?" they likely thought.
You see, when Professor Green taught Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts two years ago, the first-year students' material was the Acromantula, a creature rated XXXXX in danger. Though Irina had never attended Professor Green's classes, her seniors had told her about them.
Compared to the Acromantula, which had a danger level of XXXXX, the Cornish pixies were nothing.
But Lockhart said they were the most wicked creatures in the world, which was utterly ridiculous.
When the young wizards looked at the pixies with disdain, Lockhart seemed slightly offended. He simply said, "Alright, let's see how you handle them!"
Lockhart opened the cage, and the Cornish pixies escaped. They began jumping around the classroom like wild horses, causing havoc.
Some pixies broke the windows, scattering broken glass across the back row; others grabbed ink bottles from students' desks and splattered ink all over the classroom. The trash bins on the floor were torn apart, and they even tossed the books and bags of some students.
The young wizards in the classroom were only second-years, and their spell-casting abilities were extremely limited. Even though the Cornish pixies weren't a huge threat, they were still something the students couldn't easily handle.
Perhaps all these students could defeat the pixies individually, but when faced with their attacks, they had to hide under their desks.
At that moment, Lockhart saw that the situation was almost out of control and planned to intervene. He waved his wand and loudly shouted, "Peschipixi Pesternomi!"
However, before he could complete the spell, a Cornish pixie grabbed the wand from his hand and threw it out the window.
In the first row of the classroom, Irina and Hermione continued using spells to repel the pixies that dared to attack them. These Cornish pixies quickly realized that messing with Irina and Hermione wasn't easy. After that, they turned to intimidate the other students, creating a "no pixie zone" around Irina and Hermione.
"Ice Field!"
Seeing the pixies causing trouble everywhere, Irina was getting a little frustrated. She pointed her wand at the floor and shouted.
A blue, icy halo emerged from her wand and began to spread in all directions. All the Cornish pixies affected by this blue halo froze into ice sculptures, and the area within the halo was also affected by the magic, causing the temperature to drop rapidly.
In just a few seconds, the entire Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom seemed to turn into an ice house. Even the students who weren't directly affected by Irina's spell felt the cold.
After all, the temperature in the classroom was probably well below minus ten degrees Celsius!
This spell, called Ice Kingdom, was a variant developed by Irina while studying the freezing charm. The idea had come to her from the seemingly eternal ice palace that was accidentally released at Ollivander's Wand Shop that day.
The original freezing charm was a single-target spell cast in the form of a beam, but Irina changed the way it was released so that it spread out in waves of energy. This transformed the original single-target attack into an area-of-effect crowd control spell.
"If I can reach a higher level of magic in the future, I might really be able to release the eternal ice palace from that day at Ollivander's at will!" Irina thought to herself as she looked at the Cornish pixies, now ice sculptures scattered around her.
