Chapter 23 - The Double Cross

Master Clockmaker's eyes narrowed as he watched Sophia and Dr. Maria walk out of the room together. He knew that he had to act fast, but he also knew that he couldn't let his emotions get the best of him.

He took a deep breath and tried to think clearly. If Sophia was working for Reginald, then she must have been sent to distract them from The Syndicate's true plan. But what was it?

As he pondered this question, Alex approached him, a concerned look on his face.

"Hey, what's going on?" Alex asked, noticing Master Clockmaker's intense expression.

Master Clockmaker hesitated for a moment before answering. "Sophia is working for Reginald," he said quietly.

Alex's eyes widened in shock. "What? How did we not see that coming?"

Master Clockmaker shook his head. "I don't know. I thought she was on our side."

Just then, the door to the room burst open and Sophia walked back in, a confident smile on her face.

"Reginald's waiting for us," she said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "He wants to show you something."

Master Clockmaker's instincts screamed at him to be cautious, but he tried to push aside his doubts. Maybe this was an opportunity to get closer to Reginald and learn more about The Syndicate's plan.

"Let's go," he said, standing up and following Sophia out of the room.

As they walked through the corridors, Alex stayed close behind, his hand on his gun.

"I don't trust her," he whispered to Master Clockmaker.

Master Clockmaker nodded in agreement. "Me neither," he whispered back.

But it was too late now. They had been double-crossed, and Sophia had taken them straight into Reginald's trap.

As they entered the room where Reginald was waiting, Master Clockmaker felt a chill run down his spine. Something didn't feel right.

And then, just as Sophia was about to reveal The Syndicate's plan, she suddenly stopped in her tracks.

"Wait," she said, her eyes flashing with a look of panic. "I've changed my mind."

Reginald's face darkened with anger, and Master Clockmaker knew that they had been set up from the very beginning.

"It seems we have a problem," Reginald sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "And I think it's time to take care of you two once and for all."

As Sophia turned to make her escape, Master Clockmaker realized that he was trapped in a situation he couldn't get out of.

But then, something unexpected happened.

Sophia pulled out the tiny earpiece she had been hiding and pressed a button. The device emitted a high-pitched whine, and suddenly the lights began to flicker.

"What's going on?" Alex shouted above the din of chaos.

Master Clockmaker's eyes met Sophia's, and for a moment they locked gazes.

And then, in a flash of understanding, Master Clockmaker knew that Sophia was not working for Reginald at all. She had been sent to stop him.

But why?
