Chereads / Black Sheep of the Yamazaki / Chapter 5 - 5 | The Weight of Expectation

Chapter 5 - 5 | The Weight of Expectation

The courtyard buzzed with whispers as Ren Yamazaki disappeared from sight. His victory over Tatsuo had sent shockwaves through the clan, but Ren knew better than to celebrate. This was merely the first step in a long journey, and eyes were already on him—evaluating, judging, waiting for him to falter.

Ren strode through the corridors of the Yamazaki estate, his mind replaying the fight. His movements had been efficient, but not perfect. There were openings he hadn't noticed, moments of hesitation he couldn't afford next time.

"I need to be sharper. Faster. Stronger."

Mission: Master the Clan's Foundational Techniques

Details: Train in the Yamazaki Clan's core martial arts to enhance speed, precision, and endurance.

Reward: 1,000 Points, Skill Upgrade: Yamazaki Hybrid Style (Level 2)

Ren smirked at the notification. "Finally, something useful." The Yamazaki Hybrid Style—a fusion of Karate and Muay Thai—was the clan's pride, a deadly combination of striking power and defensive adaptability. If he mastered this, no one would question his place in the clan.

Training Grounds – Later That Day

Ren returned to the now-empty courtyard, the sun hanging low in the sky. A faint breeze rustled the trees, but otherwise, the space was silent. Perfect for what he needed.

He dropped into a low stance, feet firmly planted. The first technique was a series of quick, snapping kicks meant to overwhelm opponents and break their guard. Ren focused, visualizing an invisible enemy. His first kick sliced through the air, followed by another, and another. Each strike was faster, more fluid.

The System chimed in his head.

Sweat dripped down Ren's brow, but he didn't stop. Next were elbow strikes, mimicking the raw power of Muay Thai. He twisted his body, driving his elbows forward with brutal precision. Each strike felt more natural, more powerful.

Hours passed. The sky darkened, stars emerging one by one. Ren's muscles ached, his breath ragged. But he didn't care. This was what it meant to grow stronger—pushing beyond limits, embracing pain.

As he prepared to launch into a final set of combinations, a voice interrupted him.

"You've improved."

Ren turned to see Chiron Yamazaki, the clan's head, standing at the edge of the courtyard. His father's presence was commanding, his gaze cold and unreadable.

"Father," Ren acknowledged, bowing slightly.

Chiron stepped forward, his movements deliberate. "Beating Tatsuo was impressive, but one victory doesn't prove anything."

Ren straightened, meeting his father's gaze. "I know. That's why I'm here. To master the Yamazaki style."

Chiron's eyes narrowed. "Mastery takes more than desire. It requires discipline. Sacrifice. Are you prepared for that?"

"I am," Ren said firmly.

Chiron studied him for a moment longer before nodding. "Good. Then you'll train under me."

Ren's eyes widened. Chiron rarely took on personal students. This was an opportunity—and a challenge.

"I won't go easy on you," Chiron warned.

"I don't want easy," Ren replied.

Chiron's lips twitched into something resembling approval. "Then let's begin."

Midnight Training

Chiron led Ren to a secluded part of the estate, a place reserved for only the most intense training. The ground was uneven, the air colder. Torches flickered, casting long shadows.

"First lesson," Chiron said, standing across from Ren. "Control."

Ren barely had time to react before Chiron lunged, striking with the speed of a viper. Ren blocked, but the impact sent him skidding backward.

"Control your breath. Your movement. Your mind," Chiron instructed, attacking again.

Ren focused, adjusting his stance. He countered with a quick jab, but Chiron deflected it effortlessly.

"Too slow," Chiron barked. "Predictable."

Ren gritted his teeth, analyzing his father's movements. He had to find a pattern, an opening. The System chimed in, offering advice.

"Wait for his momentum to shift."

Chiron stepped forward, his weight shifting slightly. Ren seized the moment, delivering a precise kick to his father's side. Chiron blocked, but nodded approvingly.

"Better," Chiron said. "But not enough."

They continued sparring, the night stretching on. Each strike, each block was a lesson, a test. By dawn, Ren was battered and bruised, but standing.

"You have potential," Chiron admitted, his voice softer now. "But potential means nothing without effort. Remember that."

Ren nodded, exhaustion weighing heavily on him. "I won't forget."

Chiron placed a hand on his shoulder. "Rest today. Tomorrow, we begin again."

As Chiron walked away, Ren sank to the ground, staring up at the fading stars. His body ached, but his resolve burned brighter than ever.

"This is just the beginning."
