It seemed… he should be safe for now.
Alan released his grip, letting the corpse of a horned demon drop to the ground.
He found himself in a cave—or more aptly, a crevice in the rock. After what felt like an eternity of running, he had finally discovered this refuge.
The space was small, about the size of a room. If Alan curled up, he could just about fit inside.
Most of the demon eggs around him had already hatched, and the only thing that had emerged was the little demon before him. Scanning the area, he noticed a few half-eaten newborn demons crawling on the ground, likely not long for this world.
He could rest here.
Of course, Alan was aware that demons didn't need rest—especially not little demons, those strange beings that could keep moving as long as there was flesh and blood around. In the Abyss, danger lurked everywhere, and any moment of complacency could lead to a permanent slumber.
But Alan was different; within him resided a human soul. After enduring long periods of slaughter and flight, his body was utterly exhausted. He needed to rest, even if it meant doing nothing but studying his system.
New Bloodline Acquired: Hellhound.
No change…
Listening to the system's voice, Alan examined his body but saw no visible alterations.
It seemed that the bloodline was too weak to induce any change and was classified under mixed bloodlines.
At least he was a bit farther from the center of carnage.
Alan cautiously poked his head out to look in the direction he had come from.
It resembled an ant hill.
From a distance, he could see heaps of little demon corpses and the continuous slaughter of others.
This scene could very well persist for about half a month.
After his evolution, strange knowledge surged from the depths of Alan's bloodline, clarifying his situation.
Upon the death of powerful demons, their bodies quickly dried out in the Abyss's arid air, and the forces of the Abyss decomposed them, turning them into part of the Abyss itself.
No wonder Alan always felt something strange about these rocks. Upon closer inspection, he realized they weren't rocks at all but layers of desiccated flesh. These demon bodies formed the very terrain of the Abyss, and the place he occupied was atop a mountain of corpses.
It was chilling.
Looking at the mountains of little demon corpses in the distance, Alan grasped what the "huge rock" he was hiding behind truly was.
In the low-lying areas of Hell, the bloodlines of dead demons would accumulate, ultimately forming eggs that would give birth to new demons—this low-lying region was called the Sin Basin.
The incubation time for these eggs varied; they would only awaken when something stirred the basin during a specific "time frame." Once awakened, all the demon eggs in the basin would hatch within a day, birthing little demons that would begin to slaughter each other. This phenomenon generally lasted for half a month to two months.
In the end, only less than one percent of the little demons would survive to reach the surface.
So that's how it was… It appeared that not every place in the Abyss resembled this hellish slaughterhouse.
Alan mulled over the information flooding his mind.
He had no watch, nor were there any other means of keeping time in the Abyss—after all, the sky was devoid of light. Thus, Alan could only rely on his biological clock to gauge the concept of "half a month."
Right now, however, he was still far from the edge of the Sin Basin. In fact, Alan couldn't even see the stone walls getting any closer.
Roughly estimating… if he continued at his current pace, it would take a long time to reach the basin's edge and climb out.
As these thoughts swirled, Alan's consciousness began to blur. His eyes glazed over as he stared into the endless darkness above the Abyss, and he gradually lost control over his body…
...
Roar!!
When Alan awoke again, it was to a stabbing pain in his head.
A pair of fangs had latched onto his nose, and they were pulling at him with force, causing intense agony that momentarily blanked his mind.
Instinctively, Alan threw a punch forward, causing the fangs to loosen their grip, but not before leaving a long gash on his nose.
Not daring to waste a moment, he sprang up, leaping off the massive stone. Only then did he see that the little demon he had struck was now sprawled on the ground, its face nearly caved in from Alan's blow—clearly on the brink of death.
This little demon appeared somewhat frail, yet its arms had a thin membrane along the inside, and it was incredibly light—likely able to fly at lower altitudes.
After its second evolution, this little demon had likely used its flying advantage to avoid the center of battle, waiting for everyone else to finish before swooping in to attack the injured or weakened demons.
But alas, Alan, having undergone substantial enhancement from the Torture Demon bloodline, had killed it with a single punch.
He dragged the corpse of the flying demon back into the rocky crevice. Alan touched his nose… it hurt terribly, and the relentless hunger inside him was growing.
While demons didn't require sleep, Alan felt utterly drained; so in the quiet, he slipped into a special "sleep" state.
How long had he been asleep?
Looking around at the corpses, he saw they were nearly dry and no longer edible. The only food available to him was the would-be ambusher.
Gulp…
After indulging in raw flesh, Alan finally regained his energy.
New Bloodline Acquired: Bat Demon.
Acquired latent flight bloodline.
Eating has improved bodily recovery.
Strength diminished.
Vision diminished.
Target bloodline too weak, classified as mixed bloodline.
Thank goodness…
Alan rubbed his eyes.
For now, he didn't want to pay such a high price for just a layer of flesh.
