IMMORTAL QUEST
Chapter 35: The Final Test
The group gathered once again in the central chamber, each of them having completed their individual trials. They were exhausted, physically drained, but there was a shared sense of relief among them. The temple had tested them in ways they had never imagined, but they had endured, and in doing so, they had grown stronger.
Scott surveyed the room, his eyes scanning the faces of his friends. Derek stood tall, his confidence renewed after facing the temptation of power. Theo had opened up, shedding the silence that had once defined him. Malia, her heart now open to love, stood beside him, her usual calm demeanor replaced by a quiet determination. Mia, too, had overcome her fear of loss, her strength clearer than ever.
But they knew the trials were not over. The voice of the temple, deep and resonant, echoed in their minds once more.
"You have proven your worth. You have faced your deepest fears, your greatest desires. But the final test remains. The crystal you seek is within your reach, but you must pass the ultimate trial. To claim the power of the crystal, you must confront the one thing you have yet to face."
Scott's heart skipped a beat. The ultimate trial. What could it be? What else was there to test? He had faced leadership, he had chosen his path, and he had chosen his friends. He had already sacrificed so much to get this far.
"This test will not be of your choosing," the voice continued, "It will come for you, from within."
The room began to shift, the walls bending and warping. The ground beneath their feet trembled as if the temple itself was alive. The group stood firm, each of them holding onto their resolve, but the fear was palpable. What was coming?
Suddenly, the room split into five sections, each one leading into a different realm—different worlds that pulsed with energy, each a reflection of their inner turmoil.

Scott's Final Trial: The Burden of His True Self
Scott was the first to step forward, entering the path that had opened before him. The world around him changed instantly. It was no longer a desert or a temple; instead, he found himself standing on the balcony of a grand palace, overlooking a vast kingdom. He wore the crown now, the weight of it heavy on his head. The city below bustled with life, but Scott could feel the tension in the air. He was no longer just Scott—the leader of his friends—but the king. The ruler of this kingdom.
A figure approached from behind—his father, the king, who had died before Scott could ever know him. But this figure was not a memory—it was an apparition, a manifestation of his greatest fear.
"You are the heir, Scott. The king. This is your destiny," the apparition said. "But you are not ready. You will never be ready. You cannot bear the weight of a kingdom. You will fail."
Scott took a step back, his heart pounding. This was what he had always feared—his own inadequacy. He had led his friends, but could he truly rule a kingdom? Could he live up to the legacy of his father, who had died fighting for this very throne?
The apparition's voice was cold, dismissive. "You are nothing without power. Nothing without control. If you cannot conquer this, you will lose everything. You will lose them."
Scott clenched his fists, staring down at the kingdom he was supposed to rule. The weight of the crown grew heavier, suffocating him. But then he heard a voice—a familiar voice that cut through the darkness.
"You don't have to do this alone."
Mia's voice. He turned and saw her standing at the edge of the balcony, her eyes filled with unwavering support. Behind her stood Derek, Theo, Malia, and the others, each of them looking at him with the same understanding.
"You don't have to carry this burden by yourself," Mia said again, stepping closer to him. "We're here for you. We've always been."
The apparition faltered, its power weakening in the presence of Scott's friends. The crown no longer felt so heavy. Scott took a deep breath and, for the first time, let go of the fear that had haunted him. He stepped away from the throne, allowing his friends to gather around him.
"I don't need to be perfect," Scott said, his voice strong. "I need to be with the people who matter. Together, we'll lead. Together, we'll fight."
The palace around him faded, replaced by the stone walls of the temple. The final trial was over.

Mia's Final Trial: The Fear of Her Own Heart
Mia entered the next realm, and immediately, the world shifted. The sky was a stormy gray, the wind howling through the trees. In front of her stood a mirror, its surface reflecting not her image, but the faces of the people she loved—Scott, Derek, Theo, Malia, and even herself. But their faces were twisted, distorted by pain, their eyes filled with grief.
"You fear that love will only lead to loss," the voice of the temple said. "You fear the ones you care for will be taken from you, just as they always are. But what will you do when love is taken from you? What will you do when your heart breaks?"
Mia's chest tightened. The fear she had buried deep within her rose to the surface. She had always feared that loving others would hurt them, that her love could be the source of their pain.
As she stepped closer to the mirror, the faces of her friends blurred, replaced by images of her own past—lost friendships, broken relationships. She had always kept people at arm's length, afraid of what might happen if she let them in.
"You must choose, Mia," the voice continued. "Will you shut your heart off, or will you open it to the pain, knowing that love can heal?"
Mia reached out and touched the mirror, her fingers trembling. She knew she couldn't live in fear anymore. She had to embrace love, with all of its risks and rewards.
"I choose love," Mia whispered. "I choose to love, even if it hurts. I won't let fear control me."
The mirror shattered, and the world around her calmed. The storm faded, and the sky cleared. She emerged from the trial, stronger, her heart open.
