Chapter 041: Amnesia?
"Ring ring..."
"Ring ring..."
A sharp phone ring echoed through the room.
Lin Ye, who was fast asleep, stirred irritably.
After finally getting a good night's sleep, being woken up by an early morning call soured his mood.
He blindly reached out and hung up the call.
But moments later, the phone rang again.
"Can't a guy get some sleep?!"
Frustrated, Lin Ye answered.
"You dare hang up on me? Do you have a death wish?!"
A fierce, lion-like roar of an adult woman's voice blasted through the phone.
"Who are you?! You..."
Still groggy and irritated, he barked back.
"What?!"
"I'm not buying insurance. Go bother someone else."
He was ready to hang up again when the voice snapped back.
"Do you even realize what time it is? Are you skipping class today?"
"Not going. Watching Mai today."
With that, Lin Ye hung up.
After a while, as he became more awake,
he blinked and muttered,
"Wait... wasn't there class? It's already 9 o'clock. I'm definitely late."
Checking his phone, he let out a relaxed sigh and laid back down.
"Too late to bother now. Besides, I don't even know which school I attend."
He didn't have any memories from the original body.
All he had was a passport, no student ID.
Initially, he considered going to the embassy to sort things out and gather information. However, the sudden contact from this teacher presented a new opportunity.
"But how do I explain this amnesia to the teacher?"
"I'll just say I have amnesia."
He decided to use last night's murder case as the excuse.
At least he'd have a story, and whether they believed him or not was their problem.
"But seriously, do I really need to attend school?"
Lin Ye hesitated.
"Maybe I should. Given my age, it's hard to find any other suitable social role."
First, since he'd been reincarnated, experiencing high school life again wouldn't be too bad. His previous life was all about studying and exams, crushed under the weight of college entrance exams. Now, in a Japanese high school, he could finally enjoy youth.
"Second, for future concealment, I'll need a legitimate identity in society."
Too many anomalies would draw unwanted attention.
Lin Ye didn't believe that the authorities were completely ignorant about the mysterious game. He was even more certain that there were players within official ranks. In fact, he boldly speculated that a specialized government department or organization had already been established to deal with it.
Unless the mysterious game became widespread enough for the sheer number of participants to make concealment unnecessary, staying low-profile and hidden was essential for personal safety.
"Third, I'm already in a second-dimensional world, so experiencing high school here fulfills my lifelong otaku dream."
"I just don't know which high school I'm attending."
"If it's not a second-dimensional high school, I'll need to figure out how to transfer to one of those anime-like high schools."
But apart from Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School and Kanagawa Prefecture's Minehara High School, he wasn't aware of any others.
A few minutes later, his phone rang again.
This time, when he answered, a different woman's voice came through.
...
...
"Click..."
In Chiba,
a female teacher in a white lab coat angrily slammed her phone onto the desk.
"He's driving me mad! I'll hit him with the iron fist of justice!"
Crack, crack...
She clenched her hands, and her knuckles cracked audibly.
"Cough, cough, Hiratsuka-senpai, violence is prohibited for teachers."
"You don't understand, Hina! That kid said he's skipping class today to go watch Mai Sakurajima! Yesterday, he cut class entirely, supposedly to attend some idol Ai Hoshino's concert. Now, when I called, he outright refused to come and showed blatant disrespect toward his teacher! Students like this need discipline they need the iron fist!"
A gentle smile formed on the face of a teacher with chestnut-brown, shoulder-length hair. She took a few steps closer and calmly responded,
"It's normal for boys his age to idolize celebrities."
"But it can't interfere with their studies. He didn't come to study abroad at our Soubu High just to fool around!"
Hina Tachibana understood that Hiratsuka-sensei's reaction stemmed from a deep sense of responsibility. A less dedicated teacher might have ignored it, letting tardiness and truancy pile up until expulsion became inevitable.
"Hina, you're a new teacher fresh out of school, so you don't understand. You can't show leniency to students like him. You have to assert your authority from the start, or they'll go completely astray!"
"Understood, Hiratsuka-sensei," Hina replied respectfully.
Hina Tachibana spoke earnestly.
"Understood."
"Hiratsuka-senpai, how about I contact him?"
"Sure."
Shizuka Hiratsuka handed her phone to Hina Tachibana.
Hina dialed the most recent number, and after a few rings, the call connected.
"Hello, Lin Ye? This is"
"Teacher, I have something very important to tell you."
Hina Tachibana glanced at Shizuka Hiratsuka, who gave a nod. She then responded,
"Go ahead."
"I... I think I've lost my memory."
Hina Tachibana: ???
Shizuka Hiratsuka: ???
Is this guy seriously pretending to have amnesia?
Does he really think he can use amnesia to escape responsibility? What a joke.
There's no way that's going to work!
