Chereads / Dungeon Maker System / Chapter 18 - A Stronger Foundation

Chapter 18 - A Stronger Foundation

The only sounds that could be heard were the occasional groans of those hurt and the soft whispers of wind through the scattered debris outside the dungeon battlefield. The adventurers who had become defenders were busy salvaging whatever they could, clearing the rubble and patching up broken structures. The Traveler's Lodge lay in ruins, and the Tavern had taken a beating, but the heart of Core City remained standing.

Ethan stood in his core chamber, Mira and Lysander at his side. The battle had taken its toll, but it had also proved one thing: they could hold their own.

"Time to rebuild," Ethan said, summoning the system interface. "And to make sure this never happens again."

The Gacha Spins

Before him now was the familiar glow of the gacha wheel, its mystical energy radiating with promise. Ethan took a deep breath and spun the wheel.

Spin 1: Reinforced Outer Wall-a perimeter defense able to resist siege weapons and absorb magic.

Spin 2: Healing Springs Room-a sanctuary that offered regeneration to allies and adventurers unceasingly.

Spin 3: Mercenary Guild Hall-a building where fighters would be recruited and trained to protect the dungeon.

Spin 4: Elemental Forge-a room to craft weapons imbued with elemental properties.

Spin 5: Floating Watcher Orb, an autonomous sentry able to detect threats within a 20-mile radius.

Spin 6: Crystal Gateway Room-a magical teleportation hub that allowed for fast travel to distant locations.

As the rewards materialized, Ethan carefully assigned their placements.

The Reinforced Outer Wall surrounded Core City, creating a formidable barrier against future invasions.

The Healing Springs Room was installed near the Tavern: a safe retreat for weary adventurers. The Mercenary Guild Hall was placed in the outer district as a visible reminder that Core City wasn't just a dungeon, but a stronghold. The Elemental Forge was situated near the Marketplace, adding another layer of utility for adventurers.

Deep within the dungeon, the Crystal Gateway Room was a secret weapon for Ethan to use in emergencies. Above the dungeon, the Floating Watcher Orb hovered, its many eyes scanning the horizon for signs of trouble.

A Community Rebuilt

The adventurers who had stayed to defend Core City gathered in the Tavern that evening. Though exhausted, their spirits were high. Mira stood at the center of the room, raising a glass.

"To Core City!" she said. "And to the core who made it possible!"

A cheer rose.

Ethan, still in his human form, stood at the back of the room. He wasn't used to this kind of attention, but he couldn't deny the warmth it brought him. For so long, he had been alone. Now, he had something worth fighting for.

New Allies, New Threats

The next morning, Lysander approached Ethan with a report.

"Word's spreading fast," he said. "You've got people coming from all over. Some want to join, some want to trade, and some… well, they're curious."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Curious?"

"About you," Lysander clarified. "About what kind of dungeon core builds a city instead of hoarding treasures and monsters. Not everyone's a fan of the idea."

Ethan nodded. "Let them come. Core City will show them we're not like the others."

"But there's something else," Lysander added, his tone more serious. "I've been hearing whispers about a rival dungeon core. One that's… not happy about your success."

Ethan's expression darkened. "A dungeon core?"

"Yeah. And from what I've heard, it's powerful. Might even be older than you."

Mira joined them, crossing her arms. "Great. Just what we need-another dungeon core trying to pick a fight."

Ethan clenched his fists. "Let them come. I've fought off mercenaries, kingdoms, and adventurers. Another core won't be any different."

Preparing for the Unknown

The next few days were all about Ethan fortifying the defenses and infrastructure of Core City. Now that new rooms and buildings were up, it started to feel much more like a living town instead of a dungeon.

The Mercenary Guild Hall became a flurry of activity as skilled fighters swore loyalty to the city in exchange for room and board and coin. The Healing Springs Room soon became a favorite among adventurers; its soothing waters drew visitors from far and wide.

Meanwhile, Ethan used the Elemental Forge to fashion new weapons and equipment for his defenders. Each item he created was imbued with an element of power, giving it a great advantage in battle.

But even as Core City grew stronger, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that something bigger was on the horizon.

A Message from the Enemy

One evening, as Ethan was going over the dungeon's status, the Floating Watcher Orb detected a strange presence drawing near.

System," Ethan instructed, "identify the intruder."

The system crackled back.

"Entity detected. Classification: Messenger. Threat Level: Minimal."

Ethan furrowed his brow. "Messenger? Let them in."

A shadowy figure entered the Reinforced Outer Wall; its form shifted and ethereal. He stopped before the entrance to the dungeon and spoke in a voice that seemed to echo from another realm.

"Ethan, Dungeon Core of Core City, your existence has caught the attention of the Archon of Shadows," it said. "You have two options: yield and swear fealty, or be destroyed."

Mira stepped forward, her sword out. "Who does this guy, this Archon, think he is?"

Ethan held up a hand to stop her. "I'm not submitting to anyone," he said firmly. "Tell your Archon they can try, but Core City will stand."

The messenger laughed, a haunting, chilling sound. "Very well. Prepare yourself, Dungeon Core. The Archon does not forgive defiance."

With that, the figure dissolved into mist, leaving only a lingering sense of foreboding.

A Declaration of War

Ethan turned to Mira and Lysander, his expression resolute.

"They're coming," he said. "And we're going to be ready."

Mira smirked. "Good. I've been itching for a real fight."

Lysander nodded. "I'll make sure our allies are prepared. If this Archon wants war, they'll get one."

Ethan looked out at the city he had built, the people who now depended on him. He wasn't just a dungeon core anymore—he was a protector, a leader, and, in some ways, a creator.

Whatever it took to protect Core City, he'd do.
