Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

Adrian's POV

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the beach in a warm orange glow as Valeria and I gathered driftwood for the bonfire. My heart raced with excitement at the prospect of spending the evening with her, away from the prying eyes of the world. The laughter we shared today echoed in my mind, a reminder of how much I enjoyed being around her.

"Is this enough?" Valeria called out, her voice carrying over the soft sound of the waves lapping against the shore. She had her arms full of twigs and driftwood, and I couldn't help but admire how the dying light caught the subtle shimmer on her skin, the way it glowed like she was radiant from within.

"Definitely! It'll make for a perfect fire," I replied, grinning at her. "Just don't burn down the beach, alright?"

She rolled her eyes playfully as she dropped her load on the sand. "Please, I'm not that reckless."

I quickly set to work, arranging the wood into a small teepee structure. The sun was gone now, replaced by the deep indigo of twilight, and the first stars began to twinkle overhead. Valeria knelt beside me, her fingers deftly helping me shape the fire pit.

"Do you always come to the beach for bonfires?" she asked, her tone casual but her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"Only when I can find someone to share it with," I replied, trying to keep my voice light. "It's way more fun with company."

"Oh, so I'm just a means to an end?" she teased, raising an eyebrow.

"Maybe," I shot back with a smirk, pretending to think hard. "But you're a really entertaining means to an end."

She laughed, and the sound sent a warmth through my chest. We finished setting up the fire, and I struck a match, holding it to the kindling. Flames leaped to life, casting flickering shadows around us.

"Now that's more like it!" I said, pleased with our handiwork.

Valeria leaned back, her face illuminated by the firelight. "What's next, oh great bonfire master?"

"Food!" I declared. "You didn't think I'd bring you out here without snacks, did you?"

I reached into the cooler I had brought along and pulled out a bag of marshmallows, a box of graham crackers, and a couple of chocolate bars. Her eyes lit up with delight.

"Oh, now we're talking! S'mores?"

"Absolutely," I grinned. "The essential bonfire snack."

As we assembled our s'mores, I could feel the tension in the air shift. It was as if the world around us faded away, leaving just the two of us and the crackling fire. I caught myself stealing glances at her, fascinated by the way the flames danced across her features, her eyes reflecting the firelight.

"You know," I began, trying to break the comfortable silence, "I've never met anyone quite like you."

Her gaze met mine, curiosity swirling in her eyes. "What do you mean?"

"Just… the way you carry yourself. You have this confidence, this aura. It's captivating." I didn't plan on being so candid, but the words spilled out before I could stop them.

Valeria raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Aura? Is that your way of saying I'm mysterious?"

"Maybe," I said, my tone teasing. "Or maybe you're just a little scary."

She laughed, the sound ringing out like a melody in the night. "Scary? I promise, I'm just a normal person… with a regular job and everything."

"Sure," I replied, not buying it for a second. "But what's a normal person doing in a high-powered CEO position?"

Valeria's expression shifted slightly, her smile fading as she turned her gaze to the fire. "It's just how things are," she said, her voice low. "Sometimes, you have to become what people expect of you."

I could sense a deeper story lurking behind her words, but I didn't want to push. "Fair enough. But whatever it is you're hiding, just know that you can trust me."

She looked back at me, her eyes searching mine. "I appreciate that, Adrian. But some things are better left unsaid."

I nodded, accepting her boundary, but the moment felt heavy with unspoken truths. Just then, a sudden gust of wind sent sparks flying into the air, and I watched as Valeria's skin shimmered for a brief second, the glow intensifying almost imperceptibly.

"Did you see that?" I asked, squinting into the dark.

"See what?" she replied, a slight frown creasing her forehead.

"I thought… never mind." I shook my head, brushing it off as a trick of the light. "Let's just enjoy our s'mores."

As we toasted our marshmallows over the fire, I couldn't help but steal glances at her, intrigued by the glimmers I had seen. It was as if there was a part of her that I was just beginning to scratch the surface of, a hint of something magical that lingered beneath the surface.

The night wore on, filled with laughter, stories, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore. I found myself growing more comfortable with her, the way she listened intently and responded with quick wit. With every passing moment, the bond between us felt stronger.

"Okay, I have a question for you," Valeria said suddenly, a glint of mischief in her eyes.

"Hit me," I replied, intrigued.

"If you could have any superpower, what would it be?"

"Hmm…" I considered, a grin spreading across my face. "Definitely flying. Imagine the views!"

She rolled her eyes, laughing. "Classic choice. But wouldn't it be terrifying to be up there all alone?"

"Maybe, but I think it'd be worth it for the freedom," I said, my heart racing at the thought of being free like that. "What about you?"

She hesitated, her gaze drifting to the flames. "I'd want to control water."

"Control water?" I repeated, fascinated. "That's a unique choice."

"Yeah, I mean, think about it. You could manipulate the ocean, create waves, and maybe even part the sea," she said, her eyes shimmering as she spoke.

"That sounds pretty powerful," I said, the idea of it intriguing me. "But what would you do with that power?"

Valeria looked at me, a soft smile on her lips. "Protect what's important to me."

The sincerity in her voice sent a shiver down my spine. I could sense that there was more behind her words, more than she was willing to share. But as I watched her, the firelight reflecting off her face, I felt an overwhelming urge to draw closer, to understand her in ways that others hadn't.

The evening unfolded, with the stars twinkling overhead like diamonds scattered across velvet. As the fire crackled, I could feel a growing connection between us, something that transcended the ordinary—a pull that was both thrilling and terrifying.

Just as I opened my mouth to say something, Valeria suddenly leaned in closer, her eyes narrowing as if she sensed something. "Did you hear that?"

My heart raced as I strained to listen. The sound of laughter and music drifted from down the beach, breaking the serene atmosphere we had created.

"Looks like a party is happening nearby," I said, trying to lighten the mood.

"Should we check it out?" she asked, her expression shifting from curiosity to a mix of excitement and caution.

"Why not? We're already out here; it could be fun," I suggested, hoping to keep the energy high.

Valeria hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Alright, but let's keep it low-key."

We gathered our things and extinguished the fire, leaving behind a soft glow as we made our way down the beach. The music grew louder, and the laughter echoed into the night.

As we approached the gathering, I couldn't shake the feeling that something significant was about to happen. With Valeria by my side, I felt an electrifying energy building in the air, a sense of adventure tinged with mystery. Little did I know that this night would change everything.
