Chapter 134 - Oath to the Wilds

The ruins receded into the distance as Kael, Rhea, and Adrin made their way across the rugged terrain, the air around them crackling with an uneasy tension. The second fragment pulsed faintly in Kael's grasp, its power intertwined with his very essence. He could feel its connection to the land growing stronger with every step, but the visions it shared weighed heavily on him.

Adrin broke the silence, his voice carrying a mix of unease and curiosity. "So, what happens now? We've got another fragment, but it sounds like the big picture's more complicated than we thought."

Kael didn't answer immediately. He stopped at a ridge overlooking a dense forest, the treetops swaying gently despite the still air around them. The wilds were watching, their energy a constant presence that both comforted and challenged him.

"They're not just fragments," Kael said finally, his voice firm. "They're alive. They hold memories of what this world once was... and warnings of what it could become."

Rhea stepped forward, her gaze locked on Kael. "You said the wrong choice could destroy everything. What does that mean? What choice are we even talking about?"

Kael turned to her, his eyes burning with determination. "The Heart wasn't made to just restore the Earth. It's a tool—one that can reshape the world, for better or worse. The elites wanted it to build their vision of perfection, no matter the cost. If I misuse it... I'd be no better than them."

Adrin's brow furrowed, his hands resting on the hilt of his blade. "Then why are we even chasing these fragments? If it's that dangerous—"

"Because leaving it in their hands would be worse," Kael snapped, his voice cutting through Adrin's protest. "The wilds chose me for a reason. They trust me to protect what's left of this world. And I won't let anyone—elites or otherwise—decide its fate for me."

The determination in Kael's voice silenced any argument. Adrin glanced at Rhea, who nodded subtly, her own resolve mirroring Kael's.

Before they could continue, the ground beneath their feet trembled. A low, guttural growl echoed from the forest below, sending a shiver through the air. Kael's instincts flared, and he raised his spear, scanning the treeline.

"We're not alone," he murmured.

From the shadows of the forest emerged a massive creature, its form a twisted amalgamation of scales, fur, and jagged bone. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and its movements were predatory, calculated.

"A guardian beast," Rhea whispered, her hand moving to the hilt of her blade.

Kael stepped forward, his spear gleaming as the fragment's power coursed through him. "It's protecting something."

The beast roared, its voice shaking the earth as it charged. Kael met its assault head-on, his spear clashing against its claws in a burst of energy. Rhea and Adrin joined the fray, their weapons striking with precision, but the creature's strength was overwhelming.

Kael felt the fragment's energy surge, its voice guiding his movements. He struck at the beast's core, his spear finding its mark in a burst of light. The creature let out a deafening roar before collapsing, its form dissolving into the earth.

In its place lay another fragment, smaller than the others but pulsing with a unique energy. Kael picked it up, the fragment's light merging with the others in his possession.

"This wasn't part of the Heart," Kael said, his voice low. "It's... something else."

Rhea stepped closer, her eyes narrowing. "What does it mean?"

Kael stared at the fragment, its light reflecting in his eyes. "The wilds are giving us tools. Pieces of the past, pieces of their strength. They're preparing us for what's coming."

Adrin let out a low whistle. "What exactly is coming?"

Kael turned to the horizon, where dark clouds loomed ominously. "The elites aren't just fighting for control. They're preparing for a war—one that will decide the fate of the Earth. And we're the only ones standing in their way."

The three stood in silence, the weight of Kael's words sinking in. The journey was far from over, and the stakes had never been higher. But as the wilds whispered around them, Kael felt his resolve strengthen.

He tightened his grip on the spear and the fragments, his voice steady as he spoke. "The wilds have chosen us. And we won't let them down."

The path ahead was uncertain, but Kael knew one thing for sure: the fight for the Earth's future had only just begun.
