Chapter 126 - Glimpse

The tension in the camp was palpable. Adrin sat bound at the center, his hands tied with reinforced cord. Around him, the rebels formed a loose circle, their faces a mix of exhaustion and distrust. The earlier battle had left its marks—scratches on armor, bloodied bandages—but they had survived.

Kael stood before Adrin, his spear resting against the ground, his eyes cold. "You're going to tell me everything," he said, his voice low but firm. "No more half-truths. No more games."

Adrin looked up, defiance flickering in his eyes. "I told you what I know. The elites are playing a dangerous game, and you're caught in it. If you kill me, you'll lose the only leverage you have."

Kael crouched down, his gaze unwavering. "Leverage? You think you're still in control? Let me remind you—you're the one tied up."

The rebels murmured in agreement, their patience wearing thin. Rhea stepped forward, her arms crossed. "You knew they were coming, didn't you? You led them to us."

Adrin shook his head vehemently. "I didn't! I swear. The elites have resources you can't even imagine. They have scouts, drones, informants. I'm just a cog in their machine. Do you really think I'd risk exposing myself like this?"

Kael straightened, his jaw tightening. "Then explain why you ran into the ruins. What were you looking for?"

Adrin hesitated, his shoulders slumping. "There's something... buried there. Something that's not a fragment, but just as important. The elites don't want anyone finding it. That's why they sent their hunters."

"Convenient," Rhea muttered, her skepticism unrelenting.

Kael motioned for her to step back. "If he's lying, we'll find out soon enough. For now, we need to regroup. The ruins are unstable, but we'll return once we've planned properly."

As night fell, Kael found himself standing at the edge of the camp, staring into the darkness. The wilds were restless, their energy pulsing faintly beneath his feet.

Rhea approached, her footsteps light. "You trust him?"

"No," Kael admitted. "But I don't think he's lying about everything. He knows something, and we need to figure out what before it's too late."

Rhea sighed, her gaze distant. "This fight... it's bigger than I imagined. And it feels like we're always one step behind."

Kael placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip firm. "We'll catch up. We have to."

The next morning, the rebels prepared to return to the ruins. The path was treacherous, and the tension within the group was tangible. Adrin walked ahead under guard, his movements deliberate.

As they approached the ruins, the hum of energy grew stronger. The wilds seemed to resist their presence, the air thick with an almost tangible force.

Inside, the ruins were even more unstable than before. The ground beneath their feet trembled with every step, and the walls groaned as though alive.

Kael led the way, his spear glowing faintly as it resonated with the fragment's energy. Adrin followed, his eyes scanning the surroundings with a mix of wariness and determination.

"This way," Adrin said, gesturing toward a narrow passage.

Kael hesitated before nodding. The group moved cautiously, their footsteps echoing in the confined space.

At the end of the passage, they found a chamber unlike any they had seen before. The walls were etched with strange symbols, glowing faintly with a pale blue light. In the center of the room, a pedestal stood, its surface cracked and worn.

Adrin stepped forward, his eyes wide. "This... this is what they were hiding."

Kael approached the pedestal, his hand reaching out to touch its surface. As his fingers brushed against it, a surge of energy shot through him, and the room filled with a blinding light.

When the light faded, Kael found himself standing alone in a vast, empty landscape. The ground beneath him was cracked and barren, and the sky above was a swirling vortex of colors.

A voice echoed around him, deep and resonant. "You have come far, Kael. But the path ahead is fraught with danger. The choice you make here will determine the fate of all."

Kael turned, his spear at the ready. "Who are you?"

The voice laughed, a sound both comforting and unsettling. "I am the Heart. And you are not yet ready to wield my power."

The ground beneath Kael's feet began to shift, and he felt himself falling. As darkness consumed him, he heard the voice one last time.

"Find the truth, Kael. Only then will you understand."

When Kael awoke, he was back in the chamber, the rebels staring at him with wide eyes.

"What happened?" Rhea demanded.

Kael stood, his resolve stronger than ever. "The Heart spoke to me. We're not just fighting for survival—we're fighting for the soul of the Earth itself."

And with those words, Kael knew there was no turning back.
