Chapter 62 - Bargains in the Dark

The forest had grown unnervingly silent. Even the usual rustling of leaves or distant cries of nocturnal creatures seemed muted, as though the wilds themselves were holding their breath. Kael crouched low, his eyes scanning the dimly lit expanse ahead. The herb, though potent, was no longer dulling the throbbing ache in his veins. Each movement sent a sharp jolt through his body, a cruel reminder of the cost he now bore.

The wanderer trailed a few steps behind, their presence a quiet shadow. Though they had tried to explain the herb's properties, Kael found their answers lacking. He needed clarity, and more importantly, he needed a solution.

"What aren't you telling me?" Kael hissed, his voice barely audible over the crackling of dried leaves beneath his boots. "If this herb is so dangerous, why give it to me at all?"

The wanderer stopped, their hooded head tilting slightly. "You misunderstand," they said, their voice steady. "The herb wasn't meant to harm you—it's a tool, one that must be used wisely. But survival often demands sacrifices, Kael. Surely you've learned that by now."

Kael's jaw tightened. "A sacrifice I didn't agree to."

The wanderer's silence spoke volumes. They knew Kael's resentment was justified, but justification wasn't what he needed now. Answers were.

After several hours of trekking through the underbrush, they reached a narrow ravine. A faint glow emanated from its depths, a strange, pulsing light that seemed to draw Kael closer despite himself.

"What is that?" he asked, his voice tinged with unease.

The wanderer stepped to the edge of the ravine and gestured downward. "The source of the herb you consumed lies here. But it's more than just a plant—it's connected to the wilds in ways even I don't fully understand."

Kael peered into the depths. The light illuminated a network of roots and vines, their movements unnaturally fluid, as though they were alive. In the center of the glow lay a large, pulsating mass—something that looked neither plant nor beast.

"What is this place?" he asked.

"A convergence," the wanderer replied. "A point where the wilds' power is most concentrated. The herb you used is but a fragment of its potential. But if you're seeking freedom from its hold, this is where your path begins."

Kael's chest tightened. The sight was both mesmerizing and deeply unsettling. He didn't trust the wanderer entirely, but their knowledge of the wilds was undeniable. If he wanted to escape the herb's grip, he would have to confront whatever lay in the heart of this strange place.

"And if I don't survive?" he asked, his voice quiet.

The wanderer's reply was simple. "Then the wilds will have claimed another."
