Chapter 35 - Echoes in the Wilderness

The sun's first rays pierced through the dense canopy, scattering golden light across the forest floor. Kael awoke in the shelter he had built the night before—a crude but effective lean-to fashioned from branches and leaves. His body ached from the previous day's battle, but his mind was sharper than ever.

The shard he had found weighed heavily in his pack, both physically and mentally. Its strange glow seemed to pulse with life, as if it held some kind of latent energy. Kael had spent the night pondering its purpose but had come no closer to understanding it.

...

Kael moved with purpose, his eyes scanning the forest for signs of danger. The wilds had grown increasingly hostile in recent days. Beasts were not only more aggressive but also seemed to be coordinating their attacks. It was as though some unseen force was driving them.

By midday, Kael stumbled upon a peculiar sight. A series of stones, arranged in a deliberate pattern, jutted out from the ground like jagged teeth. The air around them felt different—charged, almost alive. Kael approached cautiously, his spear at the ready.

As he stepped closer, a low hum filled the air. The shard in his pack began to glow faintly, resonating with the stones. Kael froze, his instincts screaming at him to retreat, but curiosity kept him rooted in place. He reached into his pack and pulled out the shard, holding it up to the stones.

The hum grew louder, and the shard's glow intensified. Before Kael could react, a burst of energy erupted from the stones, enveloping him in blinding light.

...

When the light faded, Kael found himself standing in a vast, open plain. The forest was gone, replaced by rolling hills and scattered trees. The air was thick with an unnatural stillness, as though the world itself was holding its breath.

Kael's senses were on high alert as he scanned his surroundings. This place felt... different. The light here seemed sharper, the colors more vivid. It was as though he had stepped into another realm.

A sudden movement caught his eye. In the distance, a massive creature prowled across the plain. Its body was sleek and muscular, its fur shimmering like liquid silver. Kael's heart raced as he realized what he was seeing—a beast unlike any he had encountered before.

The creature turned its head toward him, its eyes locking onto his. There was no aggression in its gaze, only a calm, measured intelligence. Kael gripped his spear tightly, ready for a fight, but the beast made no move to attack. Instead, it began to circle him, its movements graceful and deliberate.

...

Kael lowered his spear slightly, his instincts telling him that this encounter was different. The beast stopped a few paces away, its piercing gaze never leaving his. Slowly, it lowered its massive head and touched the ground with its snout. A low, resonant sound filled the air, like the tolling of a distant bell.

The shard in Kael's hand began to glow again, responding to the beast's call. Kael hesitated, unsure of what to do, but something deep within him urged him to step forward. He approached the beast cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest.

When he was close enough, the beast raised its head and extended a massive paw, revealing a mark etched into its fur. The symbol was intricate, almost runic, and it glowed faintly with the same light as the shard. Kael stared at it, his mind racing with questions.

Before he could react, the beast let out another resonant call, and the ground beneath them began to tremble. Kael staggered backward as a circle of light erupted around them, forming a barrier that seemed to separate them from the rest of the world.

The beast stepped forward, its movements slow and deliberate, and touched its paw to Kael's chest. A surge of energy coursed through him, and his vision blurred as the world around him dissolved into light.

...

Kael awoke to find himself back in the forest, the stones once again inert. The shard in his hand had stopped glowing, but it felt... different. Warm. Alive. Kael sat up, his body trembling from the experience. He didn't fully understand what had just happened, but he knew one thing for certain.

Something had changed.
