Chapter 13 - The Beasts' Domain

Kael awoke to the distant cries of creatures in the early hours of dawn. The world outside his makeshift shelter was alive with movement. He could hear the rustling of leaves, the snap of twigs, and the low growls of unseen predators. The wild had its rhythm, and he was beginning to move in time with it.

After a quick meal of leftover meat, Kael set out, spear in hand, determined to push further into the forest. The terrain grew more challenging the deeper he ventured. Thick roots jutted out from the ground, threatening to trip him, and thorny bushes tore at his cloak. Yet Kael pressed on, driven by a need to understand this untamed world.

By midday, he came across a stream. The water was clear, reflecting the sunlight that filtered through the canopy. Kael knelt by the edge, cupping the water in his hands and drinking deeply. As he quenched his thirst, he noticed tracks in the mud—a mix of hoofprints, claw marks, and something else he couldn't identify. They were too large and too deep, suggesting a creature of immense size.

Kael felt a shiver run down his spine. He wasn't alone.

The realization hit him just as a shadow passed overhead. He looked up, catching a glimpse of something massive moving through the trees. Its wingspan was enormous, and its silhouette was unmistakably predatory. The creature let out a bone-chilling screech before disappearing into the canopy.

Kael's heart raced. He'd heard stories of flying beasts that ruled the skies, but seeing one in the flesh was another matter entirely. He gripped his spear tighter and scanned his surroundings. If the creature was hunting, he needed to be ready.

The forest suddenly fell silent, as if holding its breath. Kael felt the tension in the air, a palpable sense of danger. The next attack came without warning.

The beast descended in a blur of motion, its talons aiming for Kael. He rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike. The creature landed with a thud, its wings folding as it turned to face him. It resembled a bird of prey, but its body was covered in thick, armored scales. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and its beak was sharp enough to cut through steel.

Kael stood his ground, his mind racing as he assessed the creature. It was faster and stronger than anything he'd faced before. He couldn't rely on brute force alone—he needed to outthink it.

The beast lunged again, its talons tearing through the ground where Kael had stood moments before. He retaliated with a quick thrust of his spear, but the creature's scales deflected the blow. It screeched in frustration, circling him with predatory intent.

Kael's breathing was ragged, his body screaming for rest. But he couldn't afford to falter. He studied the creature's movements, searching for a weakness. Then he saw it—a small gap in the armor at the base of its neck, where the scales were thinner.

When the beast lunged again, Kael feigned a retreat, drawing it closer. At the last moment, he pivoted, driving his spear into the vulnerable spot. The creature let out a deafening cry, thrashing wildly as it tried to shake him off. Kael held firm, twisting the spear to deepen the wound.

With a final screech, the beast collapsed, its body going limp. Kael fell to his knees, his chest heaving as he struggled to catch his breath. Blood stained his hands and clothes, but he felt no fear—only a strange sense of exhilaration.

The wild was testing him, pushing him to his limits. And Kael was rising to the challenge.
