The dirt path wound through a grove of slender trees, their silver leaves swaying gently in the early morning breeze. The three companions walked in a tight formation, their steps light but purposeful as the Pearl Caverns loomed closer in the distance.
Seria adjusted the lantern in her hand, its blue flames flickering faintly even in the growing daylight. She glanced back at Krucose, who was strumming his lute idly, his fingers experimenting with a new pattern.
"Working on something?"
She asked.
Krucose looked up, startled.
"Uh, yeah. I'm trying to figure out a chord progression that might disrupt those chaotic energies you mentioned. If I can get it right, it could throw the Bone Brigade's rhythm off completely."
Seria nodded approvingly.
"Good thinking. Just remember, in a fight, precision matters. If your timing is even slightly off…"
Gulpy chuckled.
"No pressure, kid. Just play like your life depends on it, because, well... it does."
Krucose shot him a nervous look but nodded.
"Got it. No pressure."
Seria stopped suddenly, motioning for them to crouch behind a cluster of rocks. She pointed to the mouth of the Pearl Caverns ahead, where two guards in tattered, bone adorned armor stood watch, each clutching jagged spears.
"Here's the plan,"
Seria whispered.
"I'll use the lantern to create a momentary illusion a shadow that makes it seem like we're coming from the opposite direction. While they're distracted, Gulpy, you take them down quietly. Krucose, you'll stay back and keep an eye on their movements. If things go south, play something sharp and jarring to disorient them."
Krucose nodded, his fingers tightening on his lute's strings.
Seria raised the lantern, the blue flames swirling into a faint, ghostly figure that darted toward the guards like a living shadow. They turned their heads, spears raised, giving Gulpy the opening he needed.
The toadfolk moved with surprising grace for his bulk. In a swift, fluid motion, his fishing pole extended, glowing with will energy as he yanked one guard's spear from his hands and swung the butt of the pole into the other's chest. Both guards crumpled to the ground without a sound.
"Nice,"
Seria whispered, signaling for them to move forward.
As they entered the cavern, the air grew colder, and the walls glittered faintly with veins of luminous pearls embedded in the stone. The deeper they went, the louder the sounds of chanting and clashing steel echoed through the tunnels.
"We're close,"
Seria said. "The artifact will be heavily guarded. Krucose, be ready to play. Gulpy, stick to crowd control. I'll focus on reaching the Umbral Pearl."
The cavern opened into a massive chamber, its center dominated by a jagged, black orb that pulsed with dark energy. Surrounding it were a dozen pirates clad in bone armor, their weapons crackling with the same chaotic energy that radiated from the artifact.
"Spread out!"
Seria commanded, her lantern blazing brighter as she charged forward.
The battle erupted in a cacophony of sound and motion. Gulpy's fishing pole glowed brilliantly as he swung it in wide arcs, sending pirates flying like ragdolls. His movements were deceptively fluid, each strike calculated to keep multiple enemies at bay.
Krucose stayed near the cavern entrance, plucking his lute with rapid precision. The notes he played were sharp and dissonant, cutting through the chaos like shards of glass. A group of pirates charging toward Seria suddenly stumbled, clutching their heads as the bard's music scrambled their senses.
Seria seized the opening, spinning her staff in a wide arc that unleashed a wave of moonlight energy. The blast struck the pirates, sending them sprawling across the chamber.
But the artifact's dark energy flared, and more pirates poured into the chamber, their movements frenzied and unpredictable.
"Krucose!"
Seria shouted over the din.
"We need something stronger!"
Krucose gritted his teeth, his fingers dancing across the strings. He closed his eyes, letting the rhythm of the battle guide him. Suddenly, inspiration struck. He shifted into a new chord progression, the melody rising in intensity and weaving together dissonance and harmony in a way that felt almost alive.
The music surged through the chamber, resonating with the pearls in the walls. The glowing stones amplified the sound, creating an echo that reverberated through the pirates' armor. They staggered, their chaotic energy faltering under the assault of sound.
"Now!"
Seria shouted, raising her staff high. The blue flames in her lantern flared, merging with the light from her staff as she unleashed a concentrated beam of moonlight directly at the Umbral Pearl.
The dark orb pulsed violently, its energy lashing out in tendrils of shadow. One tendril shot toward Krucose, but Gulpy intercepted it with his fishing pole, the will energy forming a barrier that absorbed the impact.
"You've got this, kid!"
Gulpy yelled.
Krucose shifted into a faster tempo, the chords blending into a crescendo that sent vibrations through the entire cavern. The dark tendrils recoiled, the artifact's energy weakening visibly.
Seria took a deep breath, channeling every ounce of her power into her staff.
"Lunar Vein, end this!"
The staff glowed blindingly bright as she slammed it into the ground, sending a ripple of moonlight energy through the chamber. The wave collided with the Umbral Pearl, shattering it in a burst of light and shadow.
The remaining pirates froze, their chaotic energy dissipating as the artifact's power was destroyed. They dropped their weapons and fled, their chants silenced.
The chamber fell quiet, save for the faint hum of the pearls in the walls.
Seria lowered her staff, breathing heavily.
"Good work, both of you. That could have gone much worse."
Krucose slumped against a rock, his lute resting on his lap.
"That... was intense."
Gulpy laughed, clapping him on the back.
"You did great, kid. Those chords of yours saved our hides."
Seria offered Krucose a rare smile.
"You're more talented than I expected. Keep playing like that, and you'll be a force to reckon with."
Krucose managed a small smile, his confidence bolstered by her words. As the three made their way out of the cavern, the first rays of sunlight filtered through the entrance, casting a warm glow over their tired faces.
Their mission was complete, but Krucose couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something far greater.
*Gulpy's POV*
The cavern erupted into chaos, but Gulpy felt calm. This wasn't his first fight, and it certainly wouldn't be his last. His legendary fishing pole glowed with a faint pinky-orange hue, the manifestation of his will energy coursing through it. As pirates rushed toward him, their jagged weapons gleaming, Gulpy tightened his grip and smiled.
"Alright, boys,"
he said, his deep voice resonating through the chamber.
"Let's see if you can handle a proper fight."
A group of three pirates lunged at him simultaneously, their attacks wild and erratic. Gulpy sidestepped smoothly, his pole sweeping low and catching their legs in one fluid motion. The pirates hit the ground with loud thuds.
Another charged him from behind, but Gulpy barely turned his head, spinning his pole overhead and bringing it down like a hammer. The pirate's weapon shattered under the force, and the attacker scrambled backward, his courage visibly faltering.
"You're better off dropping those rusty sticks," Gulpy growled. "But I've got a better idea why don't you tell me who sent you?"
The pirates didn't answer, their defiance palpable despite the fear in their eyes.
Gulpy sighed.
"Alright. Guess we're doing this the hard way."
With a grunt, he channeled his will energy into the fishing pole, the glowing aura around it expanding like an unstoppable tide. The ground beneath him trembled, and the air grew dense with raw power. The faint hum of his energy grew into a deep, resonant vibration that filled the cavern.
The pirates froze, their bravado shattering like glass. One of them, his hands shaking so badly he dropped his weapon, stammered out,
"It's... it's Captain Hyst!"
"Hyst?"
Gulpy's voice was calm, but his eyes narrowed.
"Yes,"
another pirate added, his voice trembling.
"He's the boss! Known as the Shark he's the one who sent us here!"
Gulpy stared at them for a long moment, his aura still pressing down on them like a tidal wave. Then, with a sharp motion, he reeled his energy back in.
"Smart choice,"
He said simply, stepping over the cowering pirates as though they were little more than debris in his path.
The sunlight bathed the path back to the guild in a warm glow, but Gulpy barely noticed it. His mind churned with memories he had tried to bury, memories that now clawed their way to the surface.
"Hey, Gulpy,"
Krucose asked hesitantly, breaking the uneasy silence.
"Are we really going to face this Captain Hyst guy? He sounds... intense."
Gulpy didn't respond immediately, his gaze locked on the horizon. Seria, walking slightly ahead, glanced back with a frown.
"He's definitely hiding something,"
she muttered, more to herself than anyone else.
Krucose slowed his pace, now walking in step with Gulpy.
"You don't have to tell us everything,"
He said quietly.
"But we're here if you need us. Whatever this is, we'll face it together."
Gulpy glanced at the young bard, his lips twitching into a faint smile before the weight of his thoughts pulled it away.
"It's not just about facing him,"
Gulpy murmured, his voice almost lost in the breeze.
"It's about what he's become. And what I..."
He trailed off, his voice cracking ever so slightly.
Seria stopped abruptly, her eyes narrowing as she turned to face Gulpy.
"If this Captain Hyst is as dangerous as he sounds, we need to prepare. The guild needs to know."
"I know,"
Gulpy said, his tone heavy.
"But this isn't something you can prepare for. Hyst isn't just dangerous he's..."
He clenched his fists tightly around his fishing pole.
"He's a monster now."
Krucose's eyes widened.
The path back to the guild was long, winding through dense forest and rocky trails. The sun had fully risen by the time they reached a clearing, its golden light bathing the landscape in warmth. But Gulpy's mood didn't improve.
Krucose tried to break the silence with his lute, plucking out a lively tune, but even that failed to draw a smile from the usually cheerful toadfolk.
Seria eventually broke the tension.
"So... are we just going to ignore the fact that our guide and strongest fighter is acting like he's seen the end of the world?"
Gulpy glanced at her but said nothing.
"Fine,"
she huffed.
"Keep your secrets. But if you freeze up like that in the next fight, don't expect me to cover for you."
Krucose chimed in, his voice more playful.
"Yeah, we can't have you turning into a silent hero. That's my job!"
Despite their attempts, Gulpy remained quiet, his thoughts a tangled web of memories and emotions. The name Hyst had stirred something deep within him, something he had buried long ago
