Chapter 19 - Chapter – 17 Theory of Magic & Spell work by Rudiger Rosenkreutz I

In a certain Castle – somewhere in the Belphegor Domain, Underworld

At last, the day Seir had been eagerly anticipating all week had arrived—the first day of the week.

Only he truly understood the restless excitement that had consumed him over the past few days with each moment dragging on far longer than he would have liked. Time had seemed to crawl, testing his patience at every turn.

But now, the wait was finally over, as today was the day that would mark the official start of his Magic Education.

Seir woke up early–heck, he barely caught any sleep last night–eager to begin his day. After completing his morning routine, he took a bath and started getting dressed with Élise's assistance. The clothes she selected for him were noticeably more regal than his usual attire, prompting him to wonder, 'Is my tutor someone of particularly high status?'

The truth was, that Seir didn't know much about his magic tutor. All he had been told was that his teacher would be a highly accomplished magician. Beyond that, the identity of his tutor remained a complete mystery to him.

While Élise was helping him get dressed, Sheetal–after softly knocking on the door, politely informed Seir, "Lord Seirios, breakfast is about to be served. Please make your way to the Nightshade Garden."

Seir nodded in acknowledgment. "Understood. I'll be there shortly," he replied before adjusting his hair and then set off toward the Nightshade Garden, with Élise accompanying him.

Upon arriving at the Nightshade Garden of the castle, Seir made his way toward the elegant gazebo, where he spotted Malakarion and Sephie already seated and enjoying their breakfast. Approaching the rectangular table, he greeted them warmly, "Good morning, Father… Good morning, Mother."

His parents returned the greeting as Seir took one of the remaining four chairs at the rectangular table. "Morning, son," Malakarion replied with a nod. "Good morning, sweetie," Sephie added with a gentle smile.

As the maids efficiently set the plates and dishes before him, Seir glanced at the empty seat where Roygun usually sat, 'Roygun's not here?'

Roygun had stayed at the castle the previous night, and whenever she did, it was her custom to join them for breakfast. Usually, by the time Seir arrived, she was already seated in her seat, waiting to give him a bear hug as soon as he arrived.

Today, however, her absence was both unusual and puzzling.

Curiosity flickered in his eyes as he asked, "Is Elder Sister not joining us for breakfast today?"

"She should be here in a few minutes," Malakarion replied casually, his focus on elegantly slicing through his steak.

Sephie offered a sweet smile and added, "She went to welcome your tutor, who should be arriving any moment now."

"Oh!" Seir's eyes lit up with excitement. "In that case, I should go and greet the tutor as well," he said, beginning to rise from his seat.

But Sephie gently stopped him, her tone firm yet warm. "No, what you should be doing is finishing your breakfast."

"I see, Mother…" Seir responded with a slight pout, reluctantly settling back into his seat. With a soft sigh, he turned his attention to the meal in front of him and began eating.

A few minutes later, as he was halfway through his breakfast, Sephie who had finished up her breakfast, squinted her eyes, and said, "Oh… there she is…"

Seir immediately turned his head in the direction Sephie was looking and spotted Roygun, engaged in conversation with a silver-haired man he instantly recognized, and walked towards the gazebo.

The silver-haired man's elegant attire and poised demeanor were unmistakable, and Seir's eyes widened in shock. 'Wait… isn't that the Seventh-Ranked Rating Game player? Roygun was supposed to welcome the tutor, right? For her to be arriving with him… don't tell me… Oh my, Go–ack… M-Maou… Oh my, Maou–yup, sounds ridiculous, but in any case–Is he going to be the one tutoring me in Magic?'

As Seir pondered his thoughts, Roygun and the silver-haired man arrived at the gazebo. Malakarion and Sephie rose gracefully from their seats to greet him. Malakarion led the welcome, saying, "Lord Rudiger, it has been a while. Welcome to Belphegor Castle, and thank you for graciously accepting our request."

Rudiger returned the greeting with a polite smile. "Lady Roygun was quite insistent that I take the job and wouldn't take no for an answer. So, here I am." And bowed politely, "It's good to see you, Lord Malakarion, and thank you for inviting me."

Sephie followed with a warm smile, curtsying as she spoke. "As parents, we want nothing but the best for our dear son. We knew we had to find the most capable person to teach him, and we couldn't think of anyone better than you, Lord Rudiger." She then gently guided Seir–who stood beside her–forward, placing her hands on his shoulders. With a warm smile, she said, "While it might prove to be quite troublesome, as this child's mother, I am deeply grateful that you accepted our request."

"It is my honor, Lady Sephie," Rudiger replied, taking her hand gently and placing a respectful kiss on the back. He then turned to Seir with a smile, "I believe this is our first meeting," and greeted him, "It's a pleasure to meet you, young master of the Belphegor Household." His deep green eyes sparkled as he continued in a calm and measured voice, "At the request of your elder sister, I, Rudiger Rosenkreutz, will be acting as your tutor for the Theory of Magic and Spellwork. I hope we get along."

That's right; the man is none other than Rudiger Rosenkreutz, a legendary figure in the Underworld. Once a founding member of the renowned Magic Society Rosenkreuzer, Rudiger currently serves under the head of the Mammon Household as one of his [Bishops], though the man is an independent [King] himself, holding the rank of an Ultimate Devil and being one of the only two Reincarnated Devils in the Underworld who have managed to earn that status.

However, his true claim to fame was his long-standing position among the top ten Rating Game players, holding the seventh rank for an impressive length of time—a feat that earned him widespread admiration.

The top ten Rating Game players are celebrated as heroes in the Underworld, and Rudiger, holding the seventh rank, is no exception.

What sets him apart, even among the top ten rankers, is that unlike many others—including Roygun—he is one of only four individuals to have secured his position in the top ten without relying on a [King] piece. This remarkable achievement cements his status as nothing short of legendary.

The prospect of being personally taught magic by such a legendary figure–something he hadn't expected at all–excited Seir greatly, and he graciously returned the greeting with a respectful bow, "The pleasure is all mine, Lord Rudiger," he replied, then formally introduced himself, "I am Seirios Vandegor Belphegor, son of Malakarion and the next heir to the Belphegor Household. To have the honor of being personally taught by the founder of the Rosenkreuzer Magic Society... I seem to be truly blessed."

Hearing Seir's greeting, Rudiger laughed, "Ahahahaha! Well, that was a long time ago…" though internally, he was momentarily taken aback. 'Oh my?' he thought, surprised by the child's impeccable manners. It was not something one would typically expect from someone so young. He glanced at Roygun in wonder, as if questioning, 'Is he really just three years old?'

Roygun smiled proudly as if to say, 'I told you my little brother is special...'

Of course, this wasn't to say that Roygun, Malakarion, and Sephie weren't also surprised. However, their reason for being surprised was different from Rudiger's. What surprised the three Belphegors was the fact that Seir mentioned Rudiger being a founder of the Rosenkreuzer Magic Society. They all wondered, 'How did Seir know that?' But they didn't dwell on it too much. They assumed it must have been something either one of them had mentioned to him or that Seir had learned through books or an interview on the television.

After the initial greetings, the four Belphegors returned to their seats, and, at Roygun and Sephie's insistence, Rudiger joined them as well. The reason was simple—Seir had not yet finished his breakfast. While Seir himself was eager to skip the remainder of the meal and begin his lessons, Sephie firmly refused to let him leave halfway through.

In fact, Sephie had even instructed Cecily to set up plates for Rudiger so that the man could join them for breakfast, but he politely declined. "No, Lady Sephie, thank you. I am already full; I had breakfast before leaving my castle," he said with a courteous smile.

"I see…" Sephie replied with a nod before asking, "But tea shouldn't be a problem, right? Or perhaps you'd prefer coffee? I've heard that Germans have quite an affinity for it."

"That is indeed true—we Germans do enjoy our coffee," Rudiger acknowledged with a faint smile. "However, I'll opt for tea. I've heard quite a lot of praises about the tea served at the Belphegor Castle, and I must admit, I'm curious to try it."

"Well then, that curiosity must be satisfied immediately, right?" Malakarion remarked with a light chuckle.

As Malakarion finished speaking, Cecily set a cup of tea in front of Rudiger, accompanied by a small bowl of sugar cubes and an assortment of snacks to go along with tea, "Here it is, my Lord."

Sipping her own tea, Roygun offered a suggestion. "My personal recommendation is two cubes of sugar, though, of course, you can add as many as you prefer."

"Then I shall take your recommendation," Rudiger replied with a polite nod. He carefully dropped two sugar cubes into the teacup and stirred them in with a spoon.

Once he was done, Sephie leaned forward with a warm smile. "Please, go ahead and tell us your thoughts."

At her gentle encouragement, Rudiger picked up the teacup with practiced elegance. "Then I shall try," he said, raising the cup to his lips. He took a sip, and his expression shifted slightly. "Oh… oh, this is…" As Rudiger took a sip of the tea, it felt as though his senses were transported to an entirely new world. He couldn't help but exclaim in admiration, "Marvelous… I have truly never tasted tea of such finesse." Intrigued, he asked, "What blend is this? What tea leaves were used to make it?"

Sephie giggled with pride at his effusive praise, letting out a soft, "Ufufufu…"

Roygun, equally pleased, explained, "It's Mother's personal blend—something she has perfected over the past millennia."

'Spending a millennium perfecting a tea blend? That's some serious dedication to a beverage,' thought Seir as he dabbed his mouth with a napkin.

Roygun continued, "As for the tea leaves used to brew it," she paused briefly before adding with a smile, "those too are personally cultivated by Mother in her tea garden."

"Oh my," Rudiger remarked, visibly impressed. "To have the honor of drinking such exquisite tea, made from your personal blend and tea leaves you've cultivated yourself, Lady Sephie… I must say, if anything, accepting this job already feels more than worth it."

"Ara? I'm delighted that you are enjoying the tea, Lord Rudiger," Sephie giggled softly, clearly pleased by his praise.

Meanwhile, Seir, having finished his breakfast, sat quietly, waiting for Rudiger to finish his tea. Noticing his son sitting idly, Malakarion spoke, "Seir, go prepare your notebooks and other materials. Wait in the training field we've arranged for your studies. We'll have Cecily escort Lord Rudiger directly there."

"I understand, Father," Seir replied with a respectful nod. Rising from his seat, he bowed to everyone before leaving the gazebo, accompanied by Élise, on the other hand, Roygun, Malakarion, Sephie, and Rudiger began to have a discussion in regard to how Rudiger would be teaching Seir.

.

.

Sometime later, in the middle of a mountainous training field specifically designated for his Magic Education, Rudiger stood beside a green chalkboard, holding a chalk wand in his hand, while Seir sat attentively at a lone desk before him.

The contrast between the rugged, barren terrain of the surroundings and the neatly placed chalkboard and desk was striking, almost surreal. Yet, the arrangement made perfect sense—magic education that would require spell casting could not be conducted in an enclosed space due to the risk of large-scale destruction.

Not caring about the surroundings, Rudiger asked with a warm smile, "Well then, Lord Seirios… shall we begin our introductory class?"

"Yes, Master Rudiger," Seir replied with a nod.

'Master?' Rudiger mused to himself. 'Fufu… It has been a long time since a child addressed me that way… How nostalgic.' Memories of his younger days teaching the children who were part of the Rosenkreuzer Magic Society briefly surfaced, but he quickly pushed them to the back of his mind and focused on the present.

Clearing his throat, Rudiger began, "Since this is our first class, let me get a sense of your abilities. I've been told that you're an exceptional genius… but I'd like to see it for myself." He paused briefly before adding with an encouraging smile, "You can already use magic, can you not?"

"Yes, Master Rudiger. I can already perform several kinds of magic," Seir answered confidently.

"In that case, please demonstrate what you can do. That will give me a clearer understanding of your current level of prowess," Rudiger requested.

"Alright," Seir agreed as he stood up.

Rudiger added, "Do not hold back…"

"Understood," Seir nodded as he unfurled his bat-like wings and ascended into the sky. As he rose, his body became enveloped in a shimmering violet aura, and he raised his right hand, chanting, "Tornado!"

A violet magic circle materialized in the air, from which a small vortex of wind emerged. As the swirling tornado left his hand, it expanded rapidly, growing hundreds of times larger in an instant. What began as a modest gust transformed into a raging whirlwind, powerful enough to level a small village if left unchecked.

'This is… almost on par with the power of a High-Class Devil,' Rudiger observed, impressed. Acting swiftly, he erected a protective barrier around himself to ensure the chalkboard and desk remained untouched by the destructive winds.

Unlike his earlier years, when Seir was an infant and had struggled to control his magic, and it got out of control, damaging his room, he now controlled the tornado with precision. Guiding the tempest higher into the sky, he carefully dissipated it, leaving the area unscathed.

"Next is…" Seir murmured, preparing another spell. Following the same procedure as before, he conjured a colossal Fireball—a blazing sphere over thirty meters in diameter. The intense heat radiating from the fireball was nearly overwhelming, its scorching aura licking at his face. Without delay, Seir hurled the fireball into a distant clearing, where it exploded in a burst of flame.

Not pausing, he seamlessly transitioned to the next element: water. With a flick of his hand, he created serpentine water constructs, their fluid bodies twisting and turning with life-like movements. He then froze them into intricate ice sculptures and commanded them to clash against one another in an elegant display of his control over ice magic.

Lightning came next. Seir summoned down bolts of electricity that crackled across the rocky terrain, illuminating the training ground with flashes of light. Afterward, he turned to wood magic, coaxing lush trees to sprout from the barren mountains. He was fully aware that the trees would wither in no time from the pervasive miasma in the area, but he continued undeterred.

Finally, he demonstrated his command over the earth element, conjuring towering rock golems that stomped across the rugged field as if wrestling against each other before breaking them apart as the surroundings calmed down.

"Well… that's it, I suppose…" Seir murmured, feeling drained after using up more than half of his Demonic power reserves. He descended back to his desk, making his devil wings disappear as he turned to look at Rudiger.

For a moment, Rudiger stood still, seemingly speechless, his eyes wide in awe as he simply stared at Seir.

"Master Rudiger?" Seir asked, waving a hand in front of Rudiger's face. "How did I do? Did you manage to get a good sense of my abilities?"

"Ah… uh… yes…" Rudiger finally snapped out of his stupor, stammering as he gathered his thoughts. "That was a magnificent display of elemental magic using the Devil's Magic System." He nodded, his expression still full of amazement. "I certainly have a clear understanding of your current skills..."

Internally, however, Rudiger couldn't help but think to himself, 'M... monster…'

Yes, 'monster' was the only term he could come up with to describe Seir's talent.

Honestly, for someone to be able to wield that level of magic isn't entirely surprising. Nearly all High-Class Devils (in terms of strength) can use magic at that level, and some might even be better at it, creating much more devastating spells. However, the remarkable thing is that Seir is still a child, not even four years old yet.

To possess such magical prowess at such a young age... Rudiger thought to himself, 'Indeed, Lady Roygun, you were right. Your little brother is truly exceptional. His genius is nothing short of monstrous.'

At the same time, he realized that if he had missed the chance to train such a genius, he would have deeply regretted it. 'Phew... to have the opportunity to mentor such a talented child... it seems this will be quite enjoyable.'

Chuckling to himself, Rudiger pushed all other thoughts aside, deciding to take his role as a tutor seriously. He looked at Seir and said, "Lord Seirios, from your display of various spells, I can tell that you already have a good grasp of how magic works through the Devil's Magic System. So, let's analyze that…" He then asked, "Can you explain to me what you do when casting those elemental spells?"

"Hm… I imagine the phenomenon I want to create, then channel my Demonic Power to bring my imagination to life," Seir answered. Although it sounds vague, that's how he actually does it.

"Yes, that's correct," Rudiger nodded in agreement. "And there's nothing wrong with that approach—it's the most basic and standard method of casting magic as per the Devil's Magic System. But tell me..." He paused for a moment before adding, "Don't you feel mentally exhausted after all of that?"

"Yes… that seems to be the case," Seir nodded, acknowledging the mental fatigue he felt after casting so many spells.

Seeing Seir being able to relate, Rudiger smiled and began explaining, "It takes a great deal of concentration to clearly imagine the phenomenon you want to create. Then, that image must take the form of a magic circle, which in turn manifests the desired element. Now, you might think the process ends there, but it doesn't. After the element is created, you need to shape it according to your will and maintain focus to ensure it doesn't spiral out of control. This, too, requires a lot of concentration." Pausing for a moment, he asked, "Tell me, what would have happened if you'd gotten distracted while creating that tornado or fireball?"

"It would have gotten out of control…" Seir responded, recalling his childhood experience of getting swept by the tornado that he lost control of.

"Exactly," Rudiger nodded. "So, can we agree that maintaining constant focus is necessary when you use magic and that this can be mentally exhausting?"

"Yes…" Seir confirmed.

"Alright, that's point number one," Rudiger said, transitioning to the next topic. "Now, let's talk about the consumption of Demonic Power." He continued, "For better understanding, let's make an analogy. Think of your Demonic Power reserves as a water reservoir. Now, how do we get water in our castles from a water reservoir? Do you have any idea?"

"Through the pipelines, water flows from the reservoir to the taps, and from the taps, we can use the water," Seir answered.

"Hm? You know? That's good," Rudiger nodded, impressed. "Yes, that's exactly how it works." He continued, "The great thing about pipelines and taps is that you can take as much water as you need while ensuring that extra water that you do not need doesn't flow out. If you need a bucket of water, you take a bucket. If you need a tanker full, you take a tanker. All you have to do is turn on the tap. When you're done, you turn it off, stopping the flow. You can even control the flow speed by adjusting the tap according to your needs. Essentially, you're in control of how much water is consumed and at what rate. Does that make sense?"

"Yes," Seir nodded in understanding.

Rudiger continued, "But with the method you used to cast those spells, unfortunately, it's not quite like that. The moment you begin channeling your Demonic Power into your imagination, it gushes out uncontrollably from your reserves until the spell is completed. You have no control over the flow or speed, which means a tanker's worth of Demonic Power might be consumed for a spell that could be cast with only a bucket's worth."

"Huh? Master Rudiger, you are saying I could have cast those same spells with the same level of effect while using much less Demonic Power, right?" Seir asked, catching on to what Rudiger was trying to explain, and asked, "Should I try to consciously control the flow of Demonic Power as well while casting the spell?"

Rudiger smiled and nodded. "Indeed, that's exactly what I'm saying," and added while shaking his head, "But the method you speak of might not be as effective as you'd want it to be, in my opinion…"

"What do you mean?" asked Seir. Even without Rudiger pointing it out, Seir had already noticed that his Demonic Power reserves deplete rapidly when casting spells. Despite having significant reserves, he found himself unable to use as many spells as he would like. He had often wondered why this was the case and how he might reduce the energy consumption of his magic, and the method that immediately came to his mind was to try to control the flow of Demonic Power. If he can control how much Demonic Power he consumes for each spell… then he can save a lot of Demonic Power for each spell.

However, now that Rudiger is saying that the method he came up with isn't as effective, and this left him a bit speechless.

Rudiger explained, "Of course, you could attempt to control the flow of Demonic Power consciously, but that would again demand an immense amount of focus. You'd need to constantly adjust the flow and monitor every detail, which would only serve to further exhaust your mental strength. Besides, when one's Demonic Power reserves are very high… the difficulty of conscious control becomes all the more difficult."

Seir pondered over Rudiger's words, and he couldn't help but agree and asked, "So then… what is your suggestion? What other method is there to control the flow of Demonic Power?"

"The answer to your question lies in Magic Circles," Rudiger replied.

"Magic Circles?" Seir echoed, a bit puzzled.

"Yes," Rudiger confirmed. "When you imagine a phenomenon and channel your Demonic Power into that imagination, a Magic Circle forms to produce the desired effect, correct?"

"Yes," Seir nodded, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Doesn't that mean if you directly create the resulting Magic Circle instead of going through the process of imagination to feeding Demonic Power to Magic Circle to resultant magic to the controlling the magic—and then feed the Magic Circle your Demonic Power—you can achieve the same magical phenomenon and that too at a much faster speed since you are directly skipping several steps?" Rudiger asked.

Seir's eyes widened in realization. "Ah…" He nodded thoughtfully. "Right, I can do that." Then, a question echoed in his mind, 'Why didn't I think of that from the very beginning?' The answer, of course, was clear—he didn't know how to create Magic Circles.

Rudiger continued, "Using magic through Magic Circles gives you a level of control that imagination and conscious control alone cannot provide. They are essentially the taps of your reservoir—no, calling them just taps would be an understatement. Magic Circles allow you to do so much more. You can control how much Demonic Power to pour into your spells, decide the shape of the spell, regulate the speed at which it moves, and even incorporate additional enhancements or conditions into the spell."

After a brief pause, he further explained, "For instance, let's say you want to create a fireball. By assigning specific values to the magic circle according to your requirement, you can ensure it draws only the necessary amount of Demonic Power to produce the desired effect. Not to mention, with this approach, you don't have to concentrate on imagining the fireball, worry about how much Demonic Power to channel, or focus on shaping it. Instead, you simply create the magic circle and input the required values. Compared to imagining every detail, doesn't assigning values directly to the Magic Circle seem much easier and way faster?"

"Hmm… It does…" murmured Seir, thoughtfully agreeing with Rudiger.

Rudiger continued, "Now, to be clear, I'm not saying the first method is bad or without merit. There are certain kinds of magic that you can only perform with the first method that simply isn't possible with the second method. For instance, in scenarios where you're working with highly complex spells that require intricate calculations, relying on imagination to achieve the intended effect might actually be the better approach. In such cases, even the flexibility of the first method can be more advantageous than the structured nature of the second. However, for many scenarios, I personally believe the second method is the better choice. Though, this may be the bias of someone who primarily used the second method and only learned of the first method after reincarnating into a Devil… and if you don't agree with me, then you don't have to…"

"No… I do agree with you…" nodded Seir and questioned, "But… Master Rudiger, using magic primarily via magic circles is not part of the Devil Magic System, right?"

Rudiger nodded, "Indeed, that's the case…" and added, "Though Human Mages and many other pantheons, like the Norse Pantheon that is believed to be the most advanced pantheon when it comes to the development of magic, do use Magic Circles to cast magic…" and questioned after a brief pause, "Are you, perhaps, against the idea of relying on any other Magic System besides the Devils' Magic System? Do you wish to stick to Devils' Magic System?"

Seir chuckled and shook his head. "On the contrary, Master Rudiger, I'm eager to learn about all kinds of Magic Systems and their Magic. I want my magic and spells to become more efficient, controlled, and powerful. Please teach me how to use magic through the proper application of Magic Circles."

Yes, Seir is very eager to learn other magic from other Magic Systems… this is not to say that he doesn't like the Devil's Magic System, he does, and would never give up using it because it is simply broken as it can make almost anything possible as long as enough demonic power is present as compensation, but he personally believes that using magic that is based on equations and calculations suits him better.

'In that sense, I think I am quite similar to Rossweisse as she preferred to use Magic based on calculation rather than imagination…'

"I am glad to hear you say that…" nodded Rudiger with a smile, and agreed, "Then I shall do just that… teach you about the Humans' Magic System!"

And with that, Seir's Education in Magical Theory and spell work began under the tutelage of a legendary Magician named Rudiger Rosenkreutz.

Back at the Belphegor castle

Roygun, Sephie, and Malakarion remained seated in the gazebo, the air was heavy with tension as silence enveloped them.

Suddenly, distant explosions echoed through the air, and the ground trembled beneath them, breaking the stillness and putting everyone on high alert.

Sephie, clearly worried, sprang to her feet. "I knew it! I should have gone with him. It's his first day; I must be there with my child!"

Malakarion, however, quickly interjected, his calm demeanor steadying her. "Calm yourself. Let's first determine the cause of those explosions and the tremors before jumping to conclusions."

Roygun shifted her gaze to the bubbly woman standing nearby and asked, "Liala, what's going on? Can you tell us what caused the explosions and shaking?"

The bubbly blonde woman, Liala, dressed in scanty clothing, pressed an index finger to her cheek, and her long elven ears twitched slightly as if she was focusing on someone speaking something to her and nodded repeatedly, seemingly in conversation with thin air. "Uh-huh…" "I see…" "Oh, is that so?" "Mmm… Alright…" "Thank you, little ones," she murmured in a light and whimsical tone.

Turning to Roygun, Liala spoke in a soft, sweet voice, "It's nothing to worry about. Lord Seirios was simply demonstrating the magic he already knew so that Lord Rudiger could assess his current magic abilities. Now, Lord Rudiger has begun teaching Lord Seirios."

"See? There's no need for us to be overly concerned," Malakarion said with a calm demeanor, as though he had anticipated this outcome all along.

Sephie pouted slightly, turning to the blonde woman with elven features. "Liala, you must stay with me for a while and keep me updated on everything your spirits observe, alright?"

Liala responded with a gentle smile and a respectful nod. "As you command, Lady Sephie."

Malakarion, noticing Sephie's reluctance to accept the situation but seeing her resolve to hold back, could only smile in amusement.
