Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

The day of her long-awaited test arrived, and Gracie felt a whirlwind of emotions swirling within her. After weeks of preparation, the moment she had been anticipating—and dreading—was finally here. In the lead-up to the test, she had thrown herself into her studies, poring over textbooks and notes late into the night. The relentless focus on her coursework had left little room for anything else, including the excitement she felt about her recent encounter with Adrian.

Though the memory of their engaging conversation danced in her mind, the demands of her academic responsibilities had overshadowed her desire to share this new chapter of her life with her friends, Emma and Alex.

While she had kept in touch with Alex, who was thriving in his own right, she couldn't shake the feeling of wanting to share her own news. He often updated her about how he was getting along with everyone around him, effortlessly making connections and even tutoring classmates who needed help.

His enthusiasm for supporting others only made Gracie admire him more, but it also intensified her longing to share her own experiences. She wished she could tell him about Adrian's contagious smile and the way their conversation had sparked a sense of excitement and possibility within her.

Today's test would be a solitary endeavor for Gracie, as it was not a course that Emma was offering. This meant that she would have to rely entirely on her own preparation and determination. The weight of this realization pressed on her shoulders; she had spent countless hours immersed in her notes, trying to absorb every detail and nuance of the material.

Despite her dedication, the pressure of facing this challenge alone felt daunting, and she couldn't help but wonder if she had done enough to prepare.

As she made her way to class, her heart raced with a mix of nerves and anticipation. The test was scheduled to start at 10 AM, and the clock read 9:30. Gracie quickened her pace, her footsteps echoing in the empty corridors as she navigated through the campus.

The morning air was crisp and invigorating, yet the chill did little to ease the butterflies in her stomach. She wanted to arrive early, hoping to find a quiet spot in the classroom where she could gather her thoughts and review her materials one last time. Perhaps she could calm her racing mind with a final glance at her notes, reinforcing her confidence before facing the exam.

As she walked, Gracie mentally recited key concepts and definitions, attempting to solidify her knowledge. With each step, she felt a surge of determination; this was her moment to shine. She reminded herself of the countless hours she had dedicated to studying and the sacrifices she had made to reach this point. She could do this.

However, amid the flurry of thoughts about the test, she also felt a flicker of regret at not having reached out to Emma and Alex sooner. Once the test was behind her, she resolved to share all the exciting details about Adrian, from their stimulating discussions about law to the way his passion for the subject had inspired her.

She imagined how her friends would react—Emma's eyes lighting up with interest, while Alex would probably offer his usual encouragement and perhaps some friendly teasing. The thought of sharing this new connection made her smile even amidst her nervousness.

Finally arriving at the classroom, Gracie took a deep breath and opened the door. She stepped inside, greeted by the familiar sight of desks arranged in neat rows and the faint scent of chalk lingering in the air. Taking a moment to collect herself, she found a seat near the back and settled in, her heart still racing but her resolve strengthening.

With a few minutes to spare, she opened her notes, ready to embrace the challenge ahead and remind herself that she was capable of achieving great things.

Thankfully, the lecturer was not in the classroom yet, giving Gracie a precious opportunity to revise a little before the test began. She took advantage of the quiet moment to flip through her notes, her heart still racing from the anticipation of the upcoming exam.

The lecturer, Mr. Brian, tended to arrive earlier than the scheduled time, often using those moments to chat with students or offer last-minute advice. However, this wasn't a big deal for Gracie; she prided herself on being punctual and often arrived before most of her classmates, ready to seize every chance to solidify her understanding of the material.

As the clock struck 10 AM, Gracie glanced around, noting that the room was filling up with students, yet there were still no signs of Mr. Brian. This absence felt unusual; he typically arrived before the seats were fully occupied. The atmosphere in the classroom shifted from focused energy to a palpable tension as students exchanged worried glances.

"Do you think the test will hold today?" Daniel, a coursemate sitting a few rows behind her, asked, his voice laced with uncertainty.

Gracie could sense the unease in his tone. While it was indeed unusual for the lecturer to be late, she felt confident that the test would still take place. "I'm sure it will hold; we just have to be patient," she replied, attempting to reassure him and herself.

Just then, footsteps echoed from outside the classroom, capturing everyone's attention and signaling the arrival of their lecturer. However, to Gracie's surprise, it wasn't Mr. Brian who entered the room, but rather an upperclassman she recognized from campus.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Brian won't make it today," the upperclassman announced, his voice commanding and confident. "He has a family emergency to attend to, so he told me to give you guys your test."

The statement sent ripples of murmurs through the classroom, as students processed the unexpected news. The idea of an upperclassman stepping in to administer their test was completely out of the ordinary, and a mix of apprehension and curiosity filled the air.

"Wow, he's really hot," Gracie heard one of the girls whisper, her voice barely above a murmur, but it was loud enough for several others to nod in agreement. The upperclassman was indeed striking, with an easy charm and a confident presence that turned heads.

"As a guy myself, I can't help but admit that he's quite the looker," Daniel chimed in, echoing the sentiments of the group. The atmosphere lightened a little, as a few girls in the class boldly asked for the upperclassman's number, prompting him to smile in return, clearly flattered by the attention.

Gracie, however, was still lost in disbelief. The upperclassman who had come to give them their test was none other than Adrian—the very same Adrian with whom she had shared that delightful conversation in the arcade.

Her heart raced for an entirely different reason now, and a mix of excitement and nervousness coursed through her. How was it possible that he was here, and how would she manage to focus on the test with him standing in front of her? The realization that this handsome upperclassman, whom she had been thinking about since their last encounter, was now in a position of authority over her test added layers of complexity to her feelings.

"Alright, everyone, your test starts in ten minutes, so make use of the time well. Once the time is up, we start immediately," Adrian announced to the class, his voice steady and authoritative. A wave of acknowledgment rippled through the room as students shifted in their seats, some still glancing at their notes while others whispered nervously to one another.

Gracie finally snapped out of her trance, realizing that she had come to write a test she had spent countless hours preparing for, and that was exactly what she needed to focus on right now. She couldn't afford to let Adrian's presence distract her; the stakes were too high, and she was determined to do well. It felt surreal to see him standing there, especially since she hadn't seen him since their encounter at the arcade. The last person she expected to run into today, of all days, was him.

With a deep breath, she opened her notes, where she had meticulously compiled key points and concepts for her last-minute revision. Each note was a lifeline, a reminder of the hard work she had put into preparing for this test. Her seat was at the back of the class, providing her with a sense of security; she knew that if she stayed quiet and focused, Adrian would likely not notice her until she stood up.

However, as she looked up from her notes to scan the classroom one more time, she unexpectedly locked eyes with Adrian across the room. For a moment, the world around them faded away. His gaze was warm and inviting, and Gracie felt a flutter of something she couldn't quite place. She had hoped he wouldn't recognize her, but the way he seemed to search for her confirmed that he had indeed noticed her presence.

Adrian had entered the classroom with the intention of finding her; he had known Gracie would be among the students. As his eyes swept across the room, he quickly recognized her familiar brunette hair and those captivating jade eyes that had left an impression on him.

Caught off guard, Gracie broke the eye contact and returned her focus to her notes, chastising herself for getting distracted. She told herself that she was probably just imagining things, that the connection they had shared was merely a figment of her overactive imagination. She needed to concentrate on the test, not on the unexpected emotions stirring within her.

The countdown to the test felt both quick and agonizingly slow. Finally, the ten minutes were up, and the test began. Gracie took a deep breath and flipped the paper over, her heart racing as she read through the questions. Thankfully, they were all topics she had studied quite well, and she felt a wave of relief wash over her. Each question felt familiar, and her confidence began to build as she scribbled down her answers.

As she worked through the exam, she found herself in a rhythm, the world around her fading into the background. The anxious chatter of her classmates turned into a distant hum, and all she could hear was the sound of her pencil scratching against the paper. With every answer she wrote, she felt more assured of her capabilities, reminding herself that she was more than capable of handling this challenge.

Yet, even amidst her focused determination, she couldn't completely shake the thought of Adrian. His presence lingered at the back of her mind, but it was not enough to deter her from answering her test questions.

Occasionally, Gracie glanced up at Adrian as he moved through the classroom, his presence both comforting and distracting. Each time their eyes met, her heart would skip a beat, but she quickly reminded herself of her primary focus: the test. She was determined to push aside any thoughts unrelated to her exam, channeling all her energy into crafting the best answers she could.

As the test period drew to a close, Gracie noticed that students around her were beginning to finish up. One by one, her classmates began to submit their papers to Adrian as they made their way out of the classroom.

The energy shifted from focused concentration to a buzz of chatter as everyone shared their thoughts on the test. Gracie observed as some girls, emboldened by the moment, slipped additional papers into Adrian's hands along with their test scripts. These papers contained their phone numbers, accompanied by flirty notes encouraging him to give them a call. Adrian received these gestures with a charming smile, clearly flattered by the attention, which only added to the tension in the room.

When it was finally Gracie's turn to submit her script, she felt a wave of nervousness wash over her. The prospect of handing in her paper felt monumental, and she just wanted to submit it and leave immediately.

Yet, as she stood there, a part of her yearned to engage with him, to share a few words and perhaps rekindle the spark of their earlier conversation. But the rational side of her insisted that it was unreasonable to take up his time; he was busy, after all, and she didn't want to be just another distraction.

With a deep breath, she approached Adrian, her heart pounding in her chest. She handed him her script, forcing herself to maintain eye contact even as her cheeks flushed slightly. Just as she turned to make her way out, she heard his voice call out to her, laced with playful teasing.

"So you aren't going to say hi?" Adrian remarked, a teasing smile spreading across his face, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
