Chapter 88 - Chapter 5: Heart of the Fractures (I)

The crystalline core towered before them, its jagged spires reaching toward the ceiling of the chamber. Energy coursed through its structure in chaotic waves, spilling into the fractures below and feeding the pulsing light that illuminated the room.

Elaine gripped the shard tightly, its glow syncing with the core's rhythm. Each pulse sent a wave of heat through her palm, and the whispers in her mind grew louder, overlapping in a chaotic chorus.

"We need to take it out," she said, her voice strained. "Before it draws in more power."

Ardyn unsheathed her blade, her gaze sharp as she scanned the chamber. "Not going to be that easy. Look."

Constructs emerged from the shadows, their forms bristling with Nexus energy. They moved in perfect synchronization, forming a defensive line between the group and the core.

Rivan drew their weapon, a salvaged rifle crackling faintly with stolen energy. "Dominion's not letting us near that thing without a fight."

Elaine stepped forward, the shard flaring in her hand. "Then we don't give them a choice."

A Fierce Battle

The constructs moved as one, their crystalline limbs striking with deadly precision. Ardyn darted between them, her blade flashing as she slashed at their joints. Sparks flew as her strikes landed, but the constructs quickly adapted, their movements shifting to counter her attacks.

"Little help here!" she shouted, narrowly dodging a strike that shattered the ground where she'd stood.

Rivan fired a series of precise shots, each one hitting a construct's core and sending it collapsing to the ground. "Don't get too comfortable. They're regrouping."

Elaine raised the shard, its light blazing as she unleashed a wave of energy that tore through the advancing constructs. The power surged through her, but she staggered as the whispers in her mind grew louder.

"You cannot destroy what you are part of," the Nexus's voice murmured. "You fight against unity, yet you crave its strength."

"Shut up," Elaine muttered, gritting her teeth as she focused on the battle.

A Dangerous Connection

The shard's energy resonated with the core, its pulses growing faster and more erratic. Elaine could feel the connection between them strengthening, as if the shard were being drawn into the core's power.

Rivan noticed her hesitation, their voice sharp. "Elaine! Whatever you're doing, stop. It's pulling you in!"

"I know!" Elaine snapped, forcing herself to break the connection. The shard's glow dimmed slightly, but the strain was evident in her trembling hands.

Ardyn fought her way to Elaine's side, her blade slick with the remnants of shattered constructs. "We can't keep this up. That thing's not going down unless you do something big."

Elaine glanced at the core, her mind racing. The shard's whispers were insistent, urging her to surrender to its power.

"Only through unity can you succeed," the voice said. "Embrace what you are meant to be."

"No," Elaine said firmly, her voice trembling with defiance. "There has to be another way."

Kael and Lira's Mission

Meanwhile, in the secondary conduits, Kael and Lira moved cautiously through a labyrinth of glowing pathways. The fractures here were narrower but more erratic, their energy sparking unpredictably.

"This place is falling apart," Lira said, her voice low. "We need to find the controls and shut it down before it takes us with it."

Kael nodded, his bow drawn as he scanned the corridor ahead. "Keep moving. We're not alone down here."

They reached a central chamber, its walls lined with monitors displaying data streams in a language neither of them recognized. At the center of the room was a massive console, its surface glowing with Nexus light.

"That's it," Lira said, rushing to the console. "If I can overload this, it'll sever the conduits' connection to the core."

Kael stood guard, his sharp eyes scanning the shadows. "How long do you need?"

"Not long," Lira said, her fingers flying over the controls. "But this system—it's not just about the core. It's linked to something bigger."

Kael frowned. "Bigger how?"

Lira hesitated, her face pale. "They're not just building Dominion to unify the shards. They're trying to recreate the Nexus—on a global scale."

A Critical Decision

Back in the core chamber, Elaine fought to stay focused as the shard's energy surged. The constructs had slowed, their movements erratic as the group's relentless attacks began to overwhelm them.

"We're running out of time!" Rivan shouted, firing another shot that shattered a construct's core.

Elaine stared at the crystalline structure, her mind torn. She could feel the shard's power growing, its potential limitless. But every pulse brought her closer to losing control, to becoming another pawn of the Nexus.

The whispers grew louder, drowning out the sounds of the battle.

"This is your purpose, Elaine," the voice said. "You are the Custodian of unity. Embrace it, or perish in the fractures you created."

Elaine gripped the shard tightly, her breathing uneven. "I'm not your Custodian. I'm not yours at all."

She raised the shard, its light flaring as she prepared to strike the core.
